A good rant is just necessary every now and then. If you've got to shout something at the top of your lungs, though, you'll shred your vocal cords. Do it in writing and everyone will be a lot better off. You can learn to choose good ranting subjects, nail the tone of your rant, and some tips for avoiding an epic rant fail.
Outline and Example of a Rant
Choosing a Subject
- It's usually a good idea to do a little research to back up and bolster your already-familiar experience with the topic or issue. Even if you think you're sure, make your rant air-tight with specific facts.
- Even if you think your opinion about an issue is iron-clad, try to make sure to bolster your strong opinion with facts, so your rant doesn't end up looking foolish. You may even end up becoming a passionate advocate for the other side, if you dig around in the issue. [1] X Research source
- The stakes of something like hydraulic fracking and mountain top removal mining may be obvious, but may be less obvious about what so-and-so wore to the red carpet. That doesn't mean you can't rant about both effectively, you've just got to dig a little deeper.
- Rants can be cultural, political, social, and address issues of class, race, sexuality, and any number of different topics. Find the serious issue behind the surface if you want your rant to go deeper.
- A personal story can lend a great amount of pathos to a rant. Do you have any personal experiences that could be used to your advantage? If you were recently stopped and frisked by a police officer for no reason, it might make your rant much more passionate to include the story.
- Stick with your subject until you find something serious at the center of it. So reality TV annoys you. So what? Stick with it until you find something more interesting.
- What is it that just doesn't make sense to you about your little irritation? If you can't stand the sitcom "Two and Half Men," you may instinctively want to say, "It's just stupid," but keep going to find the weak spot. Why is it stupid? What's stupid about it? How can you articulate the stupidity?
- You might decide that the show you hate presents stereotypical versions of men and women. Start looking for examples of this to back up your rant. Pick on them specifically and your rant will be super-strong.
Nailing the Tone
- Every time you make a claim in your rant, get in the habit of asking yourself, "So what?" Then answer that question.
- Highlight contradictions or logical fallacies. The best way to rant is to skewer the topic at hand by pointing out all the ways in which it's completely wrong, ridiculous, or terrible. Connect the dots for us.
- It's important to bolster your railing with specific examples. You can only tell us something is bad so much without bothering to prove it to us. Give us quotes, specific examples, and discuss the thing in as much detail as possible.
- "The creator of 'Two and a Half Men' says that the show is 'populist.' This is true. The show should get full credit for being so populist as to be the best show on television that appeals to the sexist, racist, dunderheaded caveman instincts in its knuckle-dragging audience."
- If you want to rant against the twee stylings of Wes Anderson movies, say, you might try writing in an overly cutesy way about the panda bear you had to care for at short film camp, and how you locked eyes with a Brazilian folk singer doing covers of Kinks songs on a thumb piano.
- There's a fine line between an effective rant and a big exaggeration. You want to get as close as possible to it without going over. Saying that Facebook ruins dates and makes it more difficult to relate to one another, not easier, is right within the constraints of a good rant. Saying that Facebook is probably responsible for Ebola? That's a stretch.
Avoiding Common Mistakes
- Good rule of thumb: give it 24 hours. If you still feel the same way about the issue, and just as passionately, and are willing to stand behind it if you're called into question, post it.
- If you were called onto national television and asked to defend your opinion, would you want to do it? If the answer is no, you might think twice about posting it for all the world to see online. [4] X Research source
- Again, it can't be stressed enough, if you're not informed about a particular issue, we don't need your opinion about it. Keep it to yourself.
- A clear thesis
- Supporting evidence
- Good examples
- Warrants and backing logic
- A summary or conclusion
- The bus was late again? Ok, so what? If you can answer that question with a good example, that it made everyone on your bus late for work, say, then you've got a good rant on your hands. If the only consequence is that it took you five minutes more to get to the coffee shop, save it.

About This Article
If you want to write a good rant, you’ll need to choose a topic that’s worth ranting about, like hydraulic fracking or mountain top removal mining. When picking a topic, make sure you’re well informed on the subject. Otherwise, you might embarrass yourself or accidentally win points for the very topic you’re trying to rail against. You’ll also want to pick something that has high stakes, otherwise, your rant may come off as whiney or unimportant. Once you pick a topic, list all the negatives you can think of so you can pick the most important ones to focus on. As you develop your rant, make sure to prove something. For example, every time you make a claim, ask yourself “so what”? Answering that question and including it in your rant will prevent you from repeating vague reasons. To learn how to nail the tone of your rant, keep reading! Did this summary help you? Yes No

how to write a rant? [closed]
Rants and ranters are numerous and pretty damn popular, so I'd just like to ask about a formula or general tips for writing them, without making my readers rage.

I am assuming you want a character that rants using dialogue (or perhaps monologue). So, writing a rant would follow the rules of any dialogue or monologue.
No character should speak without a reason. The same goes for someone ranting. Why are they ranting? What in their background, psychology or personality makes them rant? Is it a common thing or have the drop just made the cup run over?
Also, why is there a rant in your story right here? What is its purpose? Is it building character? Showing plot? Perhaps it's a rant that also is world building? (Imagine in Sci-fi, someone ranting about the glitchy teleporter... how much tech "porn" can't be included in that kind of dialogue?)
The rant should have a function, if possible more than one. A rant for the sake of ranting is most likely going to cause the reader to start skim.
Since a rant could go on for some time, you may need to beware of too much dialogue or the whole thing could get tiresome. Try telling part of the rant instead of showing it all.
Perhaps the POV person isn't the one ranting and his/her mind starts wandering when the ranter circles back to things they have already covered, or perhaps the POV person is the one ranting and he/she feels his audience isn't listening and while ranting (not shown in the text) starts worrying about not getting the message across.
The ranting character should also face opposition. Someone trying to interrupt them, or perhaps people starting to leave. Unless your ranting person is a tech billionaire or a priest people might not want to just sit and listen.
Rants sound childish and whiny. If you want a rant to be something of persuasion, it needs to have the elements of a good persuasive speech. You can study Hitler's speeches as he is considered one of the best public speakers of the modern era.
Most of his speeches were rants. They were complaining about the ruined state of Germany, and those who were to blame for it. The difference though, is he didn't sound like a child complaining and throwing a tantrum. He sounded like someone with passion and care for the people like they haven't seen before/in a while. He spoke with conviction and charm using all the right words to get the change and the results he wanted.
To do this successfully, the topic will be something you also feel charged about or else it will lose it's edge and it will feel flat. The whole point of a rant is to move people and at the very least, have them feel empathy for your point of view. A good rant is nothing more than a well written persuasive argument spoken/written with frustration and passion.
Nobody wants to hear someone complain and throw a tantrum, but people might listen if your argument is solid and passionate and speaking to the issues that need to be changed.
- 3 Sorry, there's no way to be objective about the rhetorical skills of this particular speaker. I must on principle DV anything which uses him as an example of something to emulate. He was evil. His ideas were evil. His goals were evil. The only reason to study his evil speeches is to use them as warning signs. – Lauren-Clear-Monica-Ipsum Commented Aug 26, 2017 at 14:56
- 9 @LaurenIpsum then you clearly can't appreciate good public speaking even if it's from an evil source. He is used widely in public speaking classes as an example for persuasive speaking. Sorry you let bias control you. – ggiaquin16 Commented Aug 26, 2017 at 14:59
- 2 I have taken public speaking classes and he was not used as an example. And yes, my bias against him would be such that I could not learn, so there would be no point in the teacher using those speeches. – Lauren-Clear-Monica-Ipsum Commented Aug 27, 2017 at 13:33

What Does 'I Understand The Assignment' Mean And Why Is It Being Used By Kamala Harris Supporters? The Catchphrase And Meme Explained
Project Coconut is hitting all gears for the presidential campaign of Vice President and potential Democratic candidate Kamala Harris . The newest trend established by her supporters features a series of posts with the catchphrase I Understand The Assignment' with the hopes of getting the endorsement from the Gen X and Boomers .
Although the phrase shares the same chorus as the 2021 music The Assignment (seen below) by Tay Money, which inspired a viral TikTok trend that amplified the use of the mantra online, they are not related. In this case, is all about understanding Kamala supporters' assignment of getting her elected in the 2024 Presidential Election.
Here's everything you need to know about the 'I Understand The Assignment" catchphrase and other memes related to the Kamala Harris 2024 campaign .
What Does 'I Understand The Assignment' Mean?
The phrase "I understand the assignment" is often used by someone indicating their intentions to go above and beyond to do a good job. That's the general strategy behind the organic campaign in support of Vice President Kamala Harris being spread on social that made the catchphrase resurface in late July 2024. Her endorsers are expressing that they're ready to help her win the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election following President Joe Biden dropping out of the race .
For example, on July 22nd, 2024, X [7] user @libradunn tweeted, "We understand the assignment!" in response to friends in the media asking, "What's next for Democrats?"
The trend is also part of a budding mantra among Harris voters and supporters in which they showcase their "differences" as a strength while indicating their respective duties to elect her. For instance, on July 22nd. 2024, X user @libbage55 tweeted "I’m a 69 year old white woman, and I understand the assignment." (seen below)
On the same day, X user @CGTheGeek posted a GIF showing their reaction to seeing all the "I understand the assignment" tweets. (seen below)
White folks on Twitter posting "… I understand the assignment!" #KamalaHarris2024 pic.twitter.com/WwSul0NvKA — ThereWillBeTypos 🤷🏾♀️ (@CGTheGeek) July 23, 2024
Where Is The 'Understood The Assignment' Catchphrase From?
"Understood the assignment" is a phrase well-known online and offline for decades but in August 2021 singer Tay Money helped the phrase to achieve mainstream usage by posting her song's hook, having multiple commenters asking when the full song will eventually drop (shown below). The audio from her video has been made into over 530,000 videos in three years.

Breaking news, close-up video shows a’s austin adams’ furious mets rant as he stormed off mound.
Austin Adams is still quite angry at the Mets for designating him for assignment.
After he mocked Jose Iglesias and the team’s “OMG” celebration Tuesday after escaping a fifth-inning jam, the A’s reliever unleashed an expletive-filled barrage at his former team.
The Mets signed Adams in the offseason before designating him for assignment in February and then shipping him to Oakland in March.
Warning: Graphic language
Austin Adams is mad because the Mets released him pic.twitter.com/5QJOmt2gw8 — Jomboy (@Jomboy_) August 14, 2024
“F–k out of here, you piece of s–t,” Adams appears to say, according to Jomboy — baseball’s lip-reading expert — after striking out Francisco Alvarez to escape a high-pressure jam in Oakland’s 9-4 win .
“You guys are f–king s–t. You f–king DFA me? Shut the f–k up.”
Adams never appeared in a game for the Mets but it’s clear he’s holding a grudge for how the team treated him after signing him to a one-year non-guaranteed deal in November .
The Mets designated him for assignment after signing Jake Diekman right before spring training started. He remained in camp, posting a 5.68 ERA spanning seven games.
The Athletics then acquired him for cash considerations in a March 24 trade.
Tuesday marked his first game against the Mets and he made his former team pay by escaping a two-on, no-out jam in a 7-4 game, punctuated by the strikeout of Alvarez.
After Alvarez whiffed, Adams looked at the sky and extended both arms outward and then to his mouth and then out again to mimic the dance to Iglesias’ hit song and the Mets’ home run celebration.
Adams then turned toward his dugout and walked off the field while hurling the expletives.
He claimed there was no ill intention behind his “OMG” celebration and it had not been planned.
“Honestly, I looked up and was so surprised I got out of it. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ And then it dawned on me, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh,’” Adams said. “So, then I did it. I mean, that song is sick. Iglesias is a good dude. So, hopefully no one is offended. Just having fun.”
Adams noted that the Mets moving on from him fueled him.
He has been a reliable piece for the A’s this season, posting a 3.92 ERA spanning 56 games.
“I got DFA’d three days before games started over there. I mean, I’m a middle reliever, so I mean, that just happens with the job that I have,” Adams said. “I got out of a huge jam that helped the team.
“I pitch on emotion. I maybe need to do a better job of not doing that. But, at the end of the day, big-time situation in a game. Got some big outs, got the team a win. You know when you get DFA’d you’re told you’re not good enough to play for a team anymore. You know it sucks, so yeah had a little extra juice today.”
Mets closer Edwin Diaz told The Post he did not appreciate Adams’ actions.
“He crossed a line because that’s something we do when we hit a homer or something,” Diaz said.
“He (can) do it always, that’s fine. But, he can’t get mad if we do something to him the next couple of days.”
The Mets and Athletics meet for the second game of the three-game set Wednesday.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Confirms Returning Mini-Game for Part 3
Final fantasy 7 remake part 3 can't repeat rebirth's mistakes with its playable characters, september and october 2024 will be big months for xbox 360, ps3 fans.
- Gongaga's training facilities reveal insights into the Turks' philosophies through combat simulations.
- The Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth questline explores some of the moral questions about the Shinra corporation.
- The Turks' ruthless ideals are showcased in the holographic combat simulator.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth 's Gongaga is as lush as it is beautiful, though Shinra's presence is still emphasized in more ways than one. Hidden throughout the region are training facilities where Gongaga's protorelic missions take place, a Rebirth questline that has Cloud, Yuffie, and Aerith scouring the jungles in search of the Turks' hideouts. Though long abandoned, the facilities live on through their futuristic training modules, as a hologram of Tseng instigates a series of combat simulations that test the party's mettle and whether they have what it takes to uphold the Turks' convictions.
The combat simulator of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is largely centered on Chadley's findings as Cloud gathers regional and divine intel, though its tie-in to the Gongaga questline proves effective as a narrative device. Acting under the guise of Turk initiates, Cloud and the party are tasked with theoretical combat situations, facing off against fiends, mechs, and even Rude and Elena, who play the role of traitors to the cause. The irony of the situation is that, of course, the party is vehemently against the Turks and Shinra; still, there are some genuine insights into the Turks' philosophies that raise larger questions about the morality of those working under the Shinra name.
Despite the combat simulator being propped up as a production for training, there is tragedy in how it mirrors the real circumstances of Rebirth 's world.
One of the most popular features in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is returning in a bigger and better way in the series' final installment.
Integrating the Turks into Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's Combat Simulator
The turks' assignments.
The combat simulations of Gongaga's protorelic missions are played out sequentially, beginning with apprehending an insurgent leader who feigns an attack on Kalm as a distraction, instead moving forces toward Junon to take control of Shinra's mechanical weaponry. These first two missions serve as a way to test not only the combat skills of initiates, but their ability to be prepared for multiple outcomes. As Cloud and the team effectively quell these attacks, Tseng presents them with a lesson; killing is a vital component of the job, and a necessary means to uphold Shinra's strength.
Despite the ruthlessness of the Turks' ideals being present in these simulations, the same can be said for the strangely comedic air about them. The holograms of the Turks are essentially putting on a show, which becomes all the more obvious with the protorelic's third and fourth missions. Tasked with protecting Rufus Shinra, Cloud and the FF7 Rebirth team face off against another wave of enemies, receiving commendation for their success. Upon their fourth and final test, a hologram of Elena sends bullets flying toward them, as Tseng flatly states that her and Rude have defected from the cause and taken the president hostage.
The Philosophy of the Turks
The ensuing combat simulation with Rude and Elena delves deeper into their movesets in an engaging standoff, making use of the two's combat skills to hone in on the training modules as a production. Elena laments the ocean calling out as she jolts around the virtual field, while Rude quips about getting help from Avalanche, driving home the theatrics of it all. Upon their defeat, however, the ruthlessness of the Turks' philosophy presides above any sense of humor, as Tseng reiterates their convictions: kill or be killed, those are the only possible outcomes.
The beginning of the Gongaga protorelic questline evokes a moral question that Yuffie and Aerith discuss. Aerith raises the complicated nature of those working under Shinra's company , stating that some of them are good people. Yuffie counters that choosing to work for the company makes them enablers. Both perspectives are interesting in the context of the training simulations, especially when Crisis Core 's Cissnei shows up, who belies her connection to the Turks. Through these missions, it becomes ever clearer that Shinra exists in a gray area, and despite the combat simulator being propped up as a production for training, there is tragedy in how it mirrors the real circumstances of Rebirth 's world.

Mets closer Edwin Díaz says A's pitcher Austin Adams 'crossed the line' by mocking team's 'OMG' celebration
The mets designated adams for assignment during spring training and he returned to citi field with a vengeance.
Back on Feb. 6, the New York Mets designated righty reliever Austin Adams for assignment, meaning they dropped him from the 40-man roster and essentially ruled him out for a big-league job. Later in spring training, the Mets traded Adams to the Oakland Athletics in a cash deal, and he's found a home in Oakland. The 33-year-old has a 3.92 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 41 1/3 innings.
Tuesday night at Citi Field ( OAK 9, NYM 4 ), Adams got his revenge against the Mets when he entered the game with runners on first and second with no outs in the fifth inning, and escaped the jam. He struck out Francisco Alvarez to end the inning and, as he walked off the field, Adams mimicked New York's "OMG" celebration, which they do after hitting home runs.
The celebration stems from Mets infielder Jose Iglesias ' song, "OMG," which he released in June. He performed the song at Citi Field after a win on June 28. Here is Adams striking out Alvarez and doing the "OMG" gesture. Lipreading sleuths say Adams also said several NSFW words as he left the field.
Austin Adams appeared to mimic the OMG Mets celebration after striking out Francisco Alvarez to get out of a jam in the 5th pic.twitter.com/zzH3pOezJN — SNY (@SNYtv) August 14, 2024
"Honestly, I looked up and was so surprised I got out of it. I was like, 'Oh my gosh.' And then it dawned on me, I was like, 'Oh my gosh.' So then I did it. I mean, that song is sick. Iglesias is a good dude. So hopefully no one is offended. Just having fun," Adams said after Tuesday's game ( via New York Post ). "... I pitch on emotion. I maybe need to do a better job of not doing that. But at the end of the day, big time situation in a game. Got some big outs, got the team a win. You know, when you get DFAed you're told you're not good enough to play for a team anymore. You know it sucks, so yeah had a little extra juice today."
I guess give Adams credit for admitting he did the "OMG" celebration, though hiding behind "hopefully no one is offended" is a bit weak. We all know what he did. It wasn't subtle. Just own up to it and lean into the trolling. The Mets, meanwhile, were not happy. Closer Edwin Díaz , who shared a bullpen with Adams in spring training, said he took it too far.
"He crossed a line because that's something we do when we hit a homer or something," Díaz said ( via New York Post ). "He (can) do it always, that's fine. But he can't get mad if we do something to him the next couple of days."
I subscribe to the "if you don't want to get trolled by the other team, don't let them beat you" logic. Adams mimicking the "OMG" celebration is some good low stakes pettiness. A solid troll job. And if someone on the Mets gets a big hit against Adams later in the series, then troll away. Such is the nature of competition.
The Mets and A's have two games remaining their series. Oakland has won three straight games and the Mets have lost four straight, putting them two games behind the third wild-card spot.

Until recently, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota was a virtual unknown outside of the Midwest, even among Democrats. But his stock rose fast in the days after President Biden withdrew from the race, clearing a path for Ms. Harris to replace him and pick Mr. Walz as her No. 2.
Here’s a closer look at the Democrats’ new choice for vice president.
1. He is a (very recent) social media darling . Mr. Walz has enjoyed a groundswell of support online from users commenting on his Midwestern “dad vibes” and appealing ordinariness.
2. He started the whole “weird” thing. It was Mr. Walz who labeled former President Donald J. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, “weird” on cable television just a couple of weeks ago. The description soon became a Democratic talking point.
3. He named a highway after Prince and signed the bill in purple ink. “I think we can lay to rest that this is the coolest bill signing we’ll ever do,” he said as he put his name on legislation declaring a stretch of Highway 5 the “Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway” after the musician who had lived in Minnesota.
4. He reminds you of your high school history teacher for a reason. Mr. Walz taught high school social studies and geography — first in Alliance, Neb., and then in Mankato, Minn. — before entering politics.
5. He taught in China in 1989 and speaks some Mandarin. He went to China for a year after graduating from college and taught English there through a program affiliated with Harvard University.
