Ooty is a great place to visit during holidays. I had been there for a week and found it so entertaining and enthralling. What I liked most was the travel by toy train which runs between Mettupalayem and Ooty. The toy train moves slowly climbing upwards and reaches Ooty after a journey of about 6 hours. The changing landscapes and panaromic views are excellent and memorable.

Ooty Travel Blog: Our Incredible 3-day Trip

Ooty travel blog : Sitting by the pavements of our campus, we were all excited about the trip we’d planned out – a 3 days visit to Ooty . We all had our phones out, one planning the transport, others calculating the itinerary budget, while I looked for cheap homestays.

However, upon reaching – our booked stay changed, the car we had digested more fuel, and ultimately, the trip was nothing short of an adventure. This is our experience of Ooty, Tamil Nadu – Ooty travel blog.

Ooty Travel Blog: Pictursque Hues on the Peaks

As we drove up the hills of Ooty through the hairpin curves, we couldn’t help but stick our heads out of the window. We even stopped at certain points for pictures where the buildings on the slopes added to colorful backdrops.

Never having visited Ooty before, I couldn’t get enough of the picturesque spot – the simple streets, the narrow curvy roads, and chocolates everywhere we went.

We were a group of 8, all my branch mates from college and also, hostellers like me. Since we had a week off on term end and most other kids had gone home, we had nothing to do on the campus.

That’s when we took off! We hadn’t had a trip in a long while since the pandemic and this was no doubt exciting, to begin with.

Driving to Ooty

Since we were a large group, we decided to rent a car for 6 of us. One guy had a Royal Enfield and he declared to bring that along. The transport got sorted out quickly – 2 on the bike and the 6 in the car.

We drove from Bangalore through Mysore and the Bandipur Tiger reserve down to Tamil Nadu Ooty through the steep hairpin curves.

It was a 6-hour journey and 3 of us could drive (not me). So they took turns driving, each fighting on who’d drive up the curves on Ooty. In the end, my roommate who’d come along on the trip and not to mention, an excellent drive, took the wheel.

Thank god. I didn’t know how well the others drove, but I knew this guy drove smoothly. So we were in safe hands up the narrow curves after crossing the Bandipur reserve.

I could tell the route wasn’t for amateur drivers as huge buses and trucks zoomed past us by inches on the narrow paths. With blind spots, there were traffic mirrors on every hairpin curve for aid. To add to it was the chilly fog that slowly became denser as we moved up the mountains.

The Other Way to get There

Did you know self-driving rental cars are banned in Ooty? Call up any cab service in Ooty and they’ll offer you a tour with a chauffeur. I asked a couple of drivers myself and they said they don’t rent cars unassisted.

You can’t rent a self-drive car. You can tell the driver wherever you wish to go and he’ll take you. But you’re not driving. Madman, Ooty Travel Blog

With the roads narrow and tourists unused to them, rental cars aren’t allowed in Ooty anymore. Though the Bandipur reserve path was great, the recommended route (that we missed) is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway line (NMR) from Coimbatore. In fact, this train covers one of the best things to see in Ooty with it being a World Heritage site.

This is a 5-hour trip from Coimbatore where you get to land straight in Ooty train station. To say so much of it and we missed it .

We Changed our Stay TWICE!

I’d booked the stay for all 8 of us from Booking.com where we’d stay together. As we’d primarily focused on budget travel, we’d picked the cheapest one as it caught our eye right away.

But that’s where it went wrong. Our stay sure had the facilities mentioned on the site. But it didn’t say where it was. As we reached its address, we had come down a ditch with almost no view of the beautiful slopes we’d crossed.

So we asked our hosts for some arrangements and later got a villa with a beautiful view behind it for a sweet price.

Ooty Travel Tip: Check up the location of your stay and make sure to get one on the higher slopes overlooking the town below – their prices don’t differ much !

Driving Through Bandipur Tiger Reserve

Early at 5 am, I managed to drag myself out of my bed and get ready as we were leaving early. It was a 6 and a half-hour drive from Bangalore and we got all our things into the car and on the bike and we began.

Driving for two hours or so, we had breakfast at a vegetarian restaurant by the road and began our trip again. Renting out a comfortable Innova for our 3 days trip to Ooty was probably the best and most expensive thing on our budget. With its cushiony seats, we didn’t have trouble through the hours.

Besides, the views through the Bandipur Tiger Reserve (also called the Mudumalai reserve from Tamil Nadu) were exciting as we slowly drove through the sanctuary. We weren’t allowed to stop inside the reserve so we kept moving with our eyes wide open to catch a glimpse of an exotic breed.

While we had no luck with tigers, we spotted plenty of deers, some elephants, and peacocks. The drive itself was exhilarating throughout.

3-Days Ooty Travel Diaries

I’ll be building an Ooty itinerary soon. But this is my Ooty travel blog – my experience of visiting the place in 3 days.

Day 1 in Ooty

Less than 3 days to be more accurate. As we reached Ooty, it was already over 12 in the afternoon. Our hosts suggested a place to dine in where it cost us much more than anticipated. We spent around Rs. 350 per person, it was EXPENSIVE.

Rs. 350 for an afternoon meal is great for once in a while, but we decided to be more cautious as we had to spend 3 days here. After all, food wasn’t the only thing we were going to spend on. But I’ve to say the meal was pretty good and some of us could barely finish it.

Our next stop was the villa which we were going to check out for the first time. Located on the higher slopes of a locality in Ooty called Tiger Hills, we had an epic view behind the stay with a garden and pathway out the front.

We made no hesitation – it was perfect! We rented it out right away.

Visiting the Ooty Markets

It was already late in the evening as we unpacked and left our villa again for a tour. So we decided to pay the markets of Ooty a visit. I think the market, unlike my assumptions, was the sweetest market I’ve visited.

With the plastic ban in Ooty, no junk skims on the roads, coffee shops offer hot chocolates in ceramic mugs rather than disposable cups, and the cold makes the smokes of grilled corn makes all the more pleasing.

Woolen attires including beanies with pom-poms, hot street-side delicacies, local chocolates and coffees, and exotic plants are some of the beauties one’s bound to see while strolling here.

After a couple of hours of roaming, buying some chocolates, and trying hot coffee, we called it a night and returned to our stay.

Day 2 – Touring the Town

While most of our team woke up lazily as the sun rose, I along with another guy who owned an iPhone (the same guy who drove really well), decided to stroll up the hill we were staying on. We passed by a few local houses, kids playing with firecrackers – yes in the morning , and then… bingo!

We hit a beautiful offbeat viewpoint towards the end of the path. The road ahead was blocked with the sign ‘Tiger Reservoir ahead, no trespassing allowed. But right before it was a high point overlooking the city down the valley.

With no vehicles and no soul around, we took in the mesmerizing air of the unperturbed wind. Not to mention, we got some amazing shots of the scenery.

Doddabetta Peak

Returning from the morning viewpoint, we freshened up for the day’s itinerary. We decided to visit the Doddabetta peak point first.

Since there were many things to see, we planned to see the places nearby to any attraction to visit. So heading up the curves of the Doddabetta Peak, we found a chocolate and tea factory and put it on our checklist.

Before the Doddabetta point, there was a road intersection with a steep view on one side where people had stopped to take pictures. Curious, we stopped here too only to find an amazing view of the tea plantations running down the hills from where we stood.

We decided to turn around from here as the road to Doddabetta went further down and felt like the view wouldn’t differ as much from our current spot.

Tea & Chocolate Factories

We turned back to the chocolate factory. For a mere Rs. 30 or so for each person, they took us for a tour around the processing of cacao to make chocolates and the tea processes… and we got a bar of chocolate each! Some white and some dark chocolates.

With so many chocolate and tea factories in Ooty, it’s difficult to describe which exact one did we visit. But to pinpoint, it lay next to the Eagles Dare Adventures – a site for sports like Sky Bridge walk, ziplining, and wall-climbing.

Pykara Lake

With none of the activities here in our budget, we headed to another nature spot after the tour – the Pykara Lake. We didn’t know what to expect from the place, but it wasn’t very exciting. Sure the pine trees loomed high making iconic Tyndall effects and the monkeys swung above us.

But you can find this elsewhere in Ooty – you need not visit the Pykara Lake for it.

Ooty Lake Boating House

The Ooty lake stands as one of the most popular spots to visit and the boating house even more. This is a fun-vee spot for kids with features of an amusement park, a tiny train track, and paddle boats.

There were more like shooting range spots. But it stood on the expensive range of activities. Moreover, it didn’t seem worth it as we could find all of these activities back home.

We did go for the paddle boat though making it a great end to the day.

However, it didn’t stop there, did it? Heading back to our stay, we stopped by the markets to pick up food and drinks for the evening – ultimately staying up late by a campfire, barely sober, and spilling out old honest stories.

Day 3: Visiting Coonoor

No, unlike the previous day, we hadn’t any energy to go for a quick morning walk up to Tiger hills. We all woke up late and lazily packed up the car again. We planned to visit Coonoor, another town 20 km from Ooty, and then head back to Bangalore .

However, with less time in hand for Coonoor, we could only visit one spot. And we chose to visit the Dolphin nose viewpoint.

Coonoor’s very similar to Ooty with its cacao and tea plantations. The Dolphin nose point, as its name suggests, is a point at the edge of a narrow peak with steep drops on either side of the road.

At its tip ‘The dolphin nose point’, you’ll hear the gush of waterfalls beneath you and if you’re lucky, you’ll see them through the mists below. We arrived at the point early when the shops still remain shut and other visitors slowly started flocking in after us.

We didn’t waste time any further as we’d had to drive back for 6 hours and make it back before dark. While an idli shop opened up here, it wasn’t worth the prices. So we headed back into the town of Coonoor and had lunch at a local dine-in at affordable rates and began our drive straight away.

Conclusion and Trip Budget

We came back to our Uni campus in time, a little over 7 in the evening. It was an exhausting ride back but it was an experience worth all of it. We got to see another elephant in the reserve and yet we wished we took a ride on the Ooty toy train.

But overall, the trip was worth it. We kept the whole plan dutch as the trip would get more expensive as we went.

We spent around Rs. 6000 per person and most of it was unsurprisingly for car fuel. The villa was much cheaper (around Rs. 300-400 per person per night) and the food got a little expensive. Some activities like boating and the entrance fee to many of the activities contribute to the rest of the expenses.

The extra expenditure went on some of the street side food like corn, and carrots, and not to mention the irresistible beanie pom beanie caps. I got two myself!

That sums up my Ooty travel blog. I’ve been reading a lot about travel lately and the next time I visit Ooty, I’ll keep an eye on more offbeat places.

There is something mystical about the Blue Mountains. Being a mountain lover, the whole idea of travelling to one of my favorite hill stations in the country, known as “The queen of Hill Stations” in South India, was unquestionably the most enthralling one. I was excited to be amidst the alluring landscapes. As you start moving through the twisted road, passing by the verdant valleys and towering Eucalyptus trees, the bountiful outdoors become your constant companion, taking you to one of the most picturesque location, popularly known as Ooty . Once regarded as the summer headquarters of the Madras government, Ooty was established by the British in the early 19th century. During the British rule, it was bustling with colonial bungalows, churches and exotic vegetable &fruit farms. It is believed that the seeds of a hill station were planted during this period. In 1827, Ooty was declared the official summer capital of the Madras Presidency. Since then, this quaint hill station has become a favorite gateway,boosting numerous tourist places and considerable numbers of Ooty hotels ranging from budget to luxurious ones.

From botanical gardens, scenic lakes, breath-taking mountain peaks, cascading waterfalls, dense forests, sprawling grasslands, extensive tea gardens to the toy train ride, Ooty has a lot to offer.

Find out the top places to visit in Ooty

Nilgiri mountain railway.

The best way to appreciate the tranquil scenery of Nilgiri is getting on-board the Nilgiri Mountain Railways. As the train makes its way through the curvaceous trail, you will be amazed by everything passing by. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was introduced in 1899 by the British and it continues to chug up from Mettupalayam to Ooty. The journey covering 26 km, travels through 16 tunnels, 208 curves and 250 bridges. In 2005, UNESCO added Nilgiri Mountain Railway in the list of World Heritage Site as part of the Mountain Railways of India. Don’t miss this enchanting journey whenever you are in Ooty.

Botanical Gardens

Located`on the lower slopes of Doddabetta Peak in Udhagamandalam, one of the most scenic locations in the city is the Botanical Gardens. Established in 1848 during British rule, the garden is divided into 6 separate sections called Lower Garden, New Garden, Italian Garden, Conservatory, Fountain Terrace and Nurseries. It also includes a glass house, a 20-million-year-old fossilized tree, and over a thousand species of exotic flora spread around the gardens.

Doddabetta Peak

If you are in Ooty, a visit to Doddabetta Peak is a must. Situated at a height of 8,650 feet from the sea level, this is the highest mountain in the Nilgiri Hills. The 9 km trail flanked by towering Eucalyptus trees leads you to one of the most awe-inspiring point, giving an uninterrupted view of the luxuriant valley. Doddabetta Peak is considered one of the most popular tourist destinations of Ooty.

Emerald Lake

Surrounded by the tea plantation and Rolling Meadows, Emerald Lake is one of the must visit places in Ooty. Located in the Silent valley of Nilgiri district, the sight of this lake is picture perfect. This place is a famous picnic spot and with its amazing landscape,it is an ideal location for photographers.

St. Stephen’s Church

St Stephen’s Church is one of the most iconic tourist spots in Ooty. Built in the 19th century, during the British rule, the church is located on the Ooty-Mysore Road. This Gothic church is known for its finest colonial architectures, the painting of “Last Supper’, and stained glass windows.

After a truly relaxing trip, I plotted another kind of holiday! This time I decided to head to the pristine beaches in Goa from Bangalore ; it was a drastic shift but looking at the great deals on Bangalore Goa flights got me in the mood to follow my Wanderlust once again.

Ooty: A 2-Day Guide Around The City

Ooty is a city tucked in the Blue Mountains of the Indian state, Tamil Nadu. This hill station is crowned as the ‘Queen of Hill Stations’, is a great choice for an ideal southern getaway. What makes this place more attractive is its pleasant weather and the scenic beauty. Amidst the eucalyptus and pine forest, resides a city that gives that awaits exploration. From highest peak to the prettiest lakes, let us dig into the city’s core to experience Ooty to the fullest.

If you’re planning a combined trip to Ooty and Mysuru, here are a list of must-visit places you can see in these two cities.

Reaching Ooty

Coimbatore is the nearest airport to the city; from there you can hire a cab to reach Ooty, which is approximately 86 km away. You can also take a flight until Bengaluru and hire a cab to reach Ooty (278 km), the route is longer but the journey through the national parks is great.

We were 18 people on a road trip from Bengaluru to Ooty. We had hired a private bus that took 12 hours to reach (many stops in between). It is advisable to book a cab instead, as the bus is not allowed in many places within the city and you will have to walk a reasonable distance to reach the spots.

Things to see in Ooty

Start the day soaking the morning sun at the Dodabetta Peak, which is the highest peak of the Nilgiri Range (Blue Mountains). Take a 360-degree tour of the mountains from the telescope tower. Then walk around the market and indulge yourself into binge eating. Do try the spiral potatoes, sweet corn and chickpea salad. They are worth a try!

Spend the afternoon in the tea gardens and tea factory. Located on the lower hills of Dodabetta Peak, the Tea Factory and Museum is a tea lovers’ haven. The whole process of tea extraction is so satisfying to the eye. What you’ll love the most is the tea tasting session that happens at the exit counter of the factory. You can also visit the chocolate factory, which is right above the tea factory for a wholesome chocolate tasting experience.

Relax and rejuvenate your minds in the lap of Mother Nature at Ooty’s Botanical Garden. Walk around the pathways surrounded by an abundance of flora, beautiful swamps and fill your lungs with the sweet smell of eucalyptus. After all that walk, it’s time to charge up with freshly brewed filter coffee along with Varkey.

Ooty Lake is one of the major attraction in the city. This man-made wonder is a place to relax and enjoy the fresh breeze while you float around the lake on a motorboat. The boating begins at 9 am and goes on till 6 pm. If you’re not a big fan of boating, then you can rent a bicycle and take a tour around the lake. Apart from these, there are plenty of other entertainments options available in the close vicinity of the lake compound, like the horror house, mini train rides, horse riding etc.

Spend some time admiring the beauty of one of the oldest church in the Nilgiris, the St. Stephen’s Church. The quaint architecture, beautiful stained glasses and the painting of the last supper on the wall of the western side will definitely remind you of the colonial times.

The evening is worth spending time in the local market near the Botanical garden. The upper bazaar (market) specializes in exotic spices, homemade chocolates, tea, essential oils whereas the lower bazaar specializes in authentic Toda jewellery and woollen clothes. This place can easily transform you into a spendthrift.

Activities you can do in Ooty

Toy train ride.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is one of the main attractions of Ooty and a thing to experience. Declared as the UNESCO world heritage site runs from Mettupalayam to Ooty (Udagamandalam) via Coonoor. It’s one of the steepest tracks in Asia and runs on a steam engine. The main highlight is the journey that takes you through beautiful tunnels, bridges and picturesque terrains.

You can buy the ticket either directly from the counters at the railway station or book on the Indian Railways website .

Boating on this manmade lake can be a refreshing experience after all that sightseeing. The eucalyptus forest surrounds the lake and the view is serene. A must-do for all when in Ooty.

What to eat in Ooty

You can find a variety of healthy food here to indulge in. Why I said healthy is because most of them are either raw, boiled or steamed.

Snack – For snacks, you can binge eat on fresh grown veggie salad (Chinese cucumber, red radish, sweet carrots and zucchini), spiral potatoes, masala kadalai, chickpea salad and varkey.

Meal – Dosa, Idli, Uttapam, Vada along with Sambar and coconut chutney makes a good combo for a great meal. If you are bored of these, you can try out the Biryani that is prepared using southern spices and tastes heavenly.

Situated at an elevation of 2240 meters, Ooty is blessed with a pleasant climate throughout the year. However, October to May is the best time to visit Ooty .

How To Reach Ooty

Being the most popular hill station in the country Ooty is well connected to major cities and towns in South India and reaching it is very easy.
By Air: Coimbatore International Airport is the nearest airport to Ooty situated at a distance of 90 KM . From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Ooty.
By Train: The nearest major railway station to Ooty is Coimbatore Junction, which is around 85 km away. From Coimbatore junction, you can take a taxi or bus to Ooty.
By Road: Ooty is well-connected by road to major cities in Tamil Nadu and neighboring states. You can take a bus or hire a taxi from cities like Bangalore, Mysore, Coimbatore, and Chennai.
By Toy Train: The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, also known as the toy train, is a popular way to reach Ooty. The train runs from Mettupalayam, near Coimbatore, and takes you through scenic landscapes and tea plantations. It is a slow but enjoyable way to reach Ooty.

There you can easily spend an hour enjoying the stunning views of the hills, forest and border of Tamil Nadu. There are a few food and tea stalls for refreshing yourself. And don’t miss the ice cream.

Entry Fee – 6 INR for adults and free for children

Explore the Government Botanical Garden – 6 KM from Doddabetta Peak

Just 6 KM from Doddabetta peak there is another famous sightseeing place named Government Botanical Garden. Spread over an area of 55 acres, Government Botanical Garden is home to thousands of exotic and local plants & trees including hundred species of ferns, groups of flowering plants, herbs, bonsai plants, fruit trees, rare plants and many more.

If you’re visiting Ooty during summer (May) then don’t miss out the Summer Festival which is a flower show in this garden. Overall, it is a great place for nature lovers to spend good time in peace.

Timing – 7 AM to 6:30 PM
Entry Fee – 30 INR for adults, 15 INR for Children, 50 INR for taking still camera and 100 INR for taking video camera.

Boating in Ooty lake – 4 KM from Botanical garden

Spread over an area of 65 acres, Ooty lake is an artificial lake that is famous for boating. The primary purpose to built this lake was fishing but with time it becomes a prominent tourist attraction of Ooty. In the summer festival, Ooty lake hosts a boat race that attracts tourists from all around.

Surrounded by the trees of eucalyptus, you can sit here and enjoy a sense of calmness. There are shops around the lake selling herbal oils and local handcrafts including eucalyptus oil and shawls.

Things to do here – Motor boating, paddle boating, row boating, cycling, horse riding, photography, having fun at an amusement park and enjoying the local food.
Timing – 9 AM to 6 PM
Entry Fee – 13 INR per person
Boating charge – 240 INR for a 2-seater paddle boat, 260 for a 4-seater and 290 for a 6-seater paddle boat.

Enjoy the Scenic Ride of Toy Train

After boating in Ooty lake now it’s time to enjoy the scenic ride of the famed Nilgiri Hill Mountain Railway. A train ride to Coonoor from the Ooty railway station is one of the best things you can do in Ooty. The journey from Ooty to Coonoor will take 1 hour and 15 minutes. During the journey, you’ll get to see the lush green surroundings of western ghats, tea estates, serene lakes, verdant meadows, scenic villages and beautiful tunnels.

Either you can book tickets online on the IRTC website or book tickets through the ticket counter at Ooty railway station which is situated next to the bus stand. But due to the popularity of the toy train tickets get sold out pretty quickly so make sure you stand in front of the queue.

After reaching the Coonoor you can take a cab or bus to reach Ooty back.

Ticket Price – 205 INR per person in first class, 30 INR per person in second class and 15 INR for the unreserved category.

Located on the Ooty Coonoor road just 4 KM from Ooty, the Ketti Valley viewpoint is the best place in Ooty to watch mesmerizing sunsets & sunrise. Often referred to as the Switzerland of South India, Ketti Valley viewpoint provides panoramic views of Ketti Valley which is the largest valley in Nilgiris . There is a telescope room to get a clear view of the valley.

This place is perfect for nature lovers who love to spend time in peace while watching the sunset over the horizon of lush green meadows. The valley is home to many ancient tribes including Todas and Badagas which you’re going to explore on day 2.

Do Some Shopping in Ooty Market

Now it’s time to end day 1 in Ooty with shopping in the Ooty market. Roaming around the bustling market while shopping and eating is the best thing you can do in Ooty after sunset. Essential oils, chocolates, tea, coffee and handcrafts are the best thing you can buy.

Explore Beautiful Lakes – Avalanche lake, Upper Bhavani lake and Emerald lake

Start your day 2 in Ooty with the serenity of lakes located around Ooty. Leave early in the morning around 7 AM so you can skip the crowd and have the best time enjoying the scenic beauty of the lakes.

Surrounded by captivating flowers and trees, Avalanche lake is situated at a distance of 21 KM from the Ooty bus stand. After reaching the lake you’ll be awestruck by its sheer elegance, simplicity and grace. This beautiful lake is best to enjoy mountain trekking, rafting, trout fishing, horse riding, rappelling and open jeep riding.

Just 5 KM from Avalanche lake there is another beautiful lake named Emerald lake. Nestled amidst the dense forest, tea estates and mountains this picture-perfect lake is perfect to spend quality time with family and friends. Sitting here while admiring its natural beauty gives you mental peace.

Now it’s time to visit the lesser-known and hidden beauty of Ooty, Upper Bhavani Lake. Prior permission from the forest department is needed to enter the area. It is the most beautiful lake in Ooty so we must recommend to you include this place in Ooty’s itinerary.

To reach the lake first you’ve to reach the forest department office from where you’ll get the jeep or bus which takes you to the Upper Bhavani lake. The entire back & froth journey will take around 2 hour time.

Located 5 KM from Ooty, Toad is a beautiful ancient village known for the Toda tribe and Toda huts. Toda huts are small unique huts-type rooms built of bamboo and decorated by the Toda art form. These huts look cute and beautiful. During the visit to this village, you can learn about their culture, food, clothes and a number of things about their community like the Toda tribe wearing homemade shawls and jewelry and their livelihood depends on dairy farming. And the most fascinating thing about this tribe is that their land is a UNESCO world heritage site .

Halasana Falls – 12 KM from Ooty

Gushes from a height of 150 feet, Halasana falls is a beautiful waterfall located on the privately owned property of Kollamuby Estate. To visit these falls you need to take permission from the owner.

The natural beauty of this fall will leave you awestruck especially after reaching the top which gives you a scenic view of the estate.

Day 2 in Ooty will end with mesmerizing sunset from Tiger Hill. Perched at the lower region of Doddabetta peak, Tiger Hill is the perfect place for relaxation in Ooty. At the top of the hill, there is a freshwater reservoir and cave which quenches the thirst of those who come here. There is also a resort that offers the perfect stay.

Start your day 3 with the 360-degree view of Nilgiris mountains at Needle View Hill Point. Located in a place called Guddalur on the Ooty-Mysore route, Needle View Hill Point is the place where you can literally touch the clouds . It is also known as the Needle viewpoint or Soochi Malai.

Away from the hustle and bustle of town, it is a perfect place for nature lovers who love to spend time alone.

To reach the top you need to walk for 1 KM. But it’s all worth it as you’ll get the panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary, Bandipur and some parts of Mysore & Kerala.

Your trip to Ooty can’t be complete without visiting Coonoor . After Ooty, Coonoor is the second largest hill station in Nilgiri Hills . Blessed with a subtropical highland climate, Coonoor enjoys pleasant climate throughout the year. The famous toy train of the Nilgiri railway passes through the Coonoor. It will take 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach Coonoor from Ooty via toy train.

I was surprised to find well-maintained roads in this part of the country. And that made driving on those curves all the more enjoyable! Though there’s also a high chance of spotting animals in this part of the Mudumalai forest, you need to make sure you drive slow on your way uphill to Ooty. This will help you ensure you don’t hit any animals crossing the road (we almost hit a Blue Bull!)

I thought I wouldn’t require to book a ticket online, and ended up standing in a long queue before the ticket counter an hour before the train had even arrived at the platform. If I had booked my tickets well in advance on the IRCTC website, I could have reserved myself a seat in First Class. My family and I visited Ooty in May-end and we were met with Ramadan festivities in every corner. The best part about it was the variety of Biryani and dates we got to have wherever we went for our meals. 6. Use Public Transport For An Easy-peasy Commute!

Though we had ourselves a private cab that made going around in Ooty hassle-free, we used the public Ooty transport whenever the car wasn’t available, or whenever we just felt like experiencing the town like a local! We found that Ooty has a regular and reliable state-run bus service, as well as tuk-tuks that helped us get around the town with ease. Though the bus fare was next to nil, the autowalas quoted ridiculously high prices before my mom put her pro bargain skills to use and we traveled around the town at dirt cheap rates.

5. Tea Lovers, Cover Your Face Before Entering The Tea Factory In Ooty

While we absolutely loved the chocolate processing room (mostly because of the free chocolate tasting session!), we ended up feeling claustrophobic in the Ooty tea processing quarters. Unlike other tea factories I have visited on my tours in the past, this one had a pungent smell and we immediately rushed out when it became unbearable. We’re certain it was only because of the rain, but make sure you’re well prepared before entering this room anyhow.

How To Explore Ooty? Here’s Your Perfect Ooty Itinerary

Misty morning, rolling hills, gorgeous lakes and vast tea estates, some places are so beautiful that they steal our hearts instantly. Ooty has lots to offer. This Ooty Itinerary covers the places to visit, getting there, places to eat, hidden gems, and everything you need for a perfect trip!

Ooty, also known as Udhagamandalam, is blessed with abundant natural beauty and breathtaking valleys. Now, who doesn’t like holidays amidst nature?

This itinerary is a 4-day itinerary. Therefore, depending upon the time availability, feel free to tweak your Ooty itinerary.

How To Reach Ooty

Day 1: Explore Ooty (Locally)

Ooty is the most desired hill station in Tamil Nadu, and reaching there is not difficult.

Visitors usually prefer to drive down to this place, as the routes are picturesque.

One can also opt for the Nilgiri Mountain Train ride.

Coimbatore Airport is about 85 km away from Ooty. Carriers like Air India, Indigo, SpiceJet regularly fly to this airport. The airport connects to major cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Kozhikode and Ahmedabad.

International travellers can book their tickets to Bangalore, 300 km away from Ooty.

Taxis and buses regularly ply from Coimbatore as well as Bangalore airports.

By Road

The state highway and the national highway is well maintained.

The private buses and Tamil Nadu State Road Transport Corporation buses run regularly from neighboring cities like Bangalore, Chennai and Mysore.

The driving distance from the major cities are:

Bangalore to Ooty: 270 km (7 hours)

Mysore to Ooty: 125 km (4 Hours)

Chennai to Ooty: 555 km (11 hours)

Coimbatore to Ooty: 85 km (3.5 hours).

Mettupalyam , which is 40 km away from Ooty, is the nearest railhead. Mettupalayam railhead is connected to many cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, Mysore and Bangalore.

From Mettupalyam, one can avail bus or a cab to reach Ooty. Another option is to board the Heritage Nilgiri Toy Train, which takes through uphill and scenic paths. The journey is relatively slow (5 hours), but it is once in a lifetime experience if you have time.

It is your first day, and depending on when you leave for Ooty; it is safe to keep this day to explore it locally and the surrounding areas.

1. Doddabetta Peak

Doddabetta is the highest peak in the Nilgiri hills. The peak is located at 2600+ meters above sea level.

The peak derives its name from two local words: ‘dodda’, meaning ‘big’ and ‘betta’, means ‘hill’.

Travellers flock to this place to admire the spectacular views from the highest point.

A heaven for hikers, it is one of the most popular places in Ooty with magnificent views. On clear days one can see Coimbatore, Mysore and Bandipur National Park.

I recommend spending about 45 – 60 minutes here and soaking into the views.

There are also some tea stalls for refreshments.

How To Reach The Peak

The Dodabetta Peak is located 9-10 km from Ooty. The place has access by foot and by vehicle.

By Rail : Ketty railway station and Mettupalayam is the nearest railheads to Doddabetta Peak.

By Road : This is a common and popular option.

Travellers can take a bus that is easily available from Ooty Bus Stand and is 8 km from the base of the Peak. From there, take an auto, taxi, shared jeep to reach the top.

You can hire a cab or travel by bus to reach the peak.

For trekkers who love to explore the rugged trail, dense forests and misty clouds, the trek is about 6 km from the main centre.

The route enfolds the flora, colorful trees and herbs!

2. Botanical Garden

Spread over an area of 55 acres, the Government Botanical Garden is home to more than 600 species of flowers and trees.

Botanical Garden is one of the major attractions of Ooty. The garden is tastefully designed and is maintained by the Horticulture Department of Tail Nadu.

The garden is divided into six sections such as:

Lower Garden
Italian Garden
Conservatory
Fountain Terrace
Nurseries.

The key attraction of this Botanical Garden is the “ Fossil Tree Trunk ” which is believed to be over 20 million years old.

Timing: The timings for the garden is from 8 am to 6:30 pm (every day).

Entry Fee : The entry fee is Rs. 30 for adults and Rs. 15 for children.

3. Ooty Lake

This beautiful artificial lake, also known as the Ooty Boathouse, is one of the major attractions of Ooty.

Ooty boathouse is 1.5 km from the bus stand and covers an area of 65 acres.

The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation provides boating facilities to visitors.

The lake is surrounded by Eucalyptus trees, which makes for beautiful sightseeing.

Timing : The timings are 9 am to 6 pm every day.

Entry Fee : The entry fee is Rs 13 for Indians. The prices for boating varies as per the seating capacity and type of boating.

If you wish to avoid crowds, visit the lake early morning.

How To Reach The Lake

Ooty lake is about 1.5 km from the bus stand. You can either walk or take a bus to reach the lake.

The distance from Botanical Garden is about 4 km.

Our Ooty Itinerary is incomplete without visiting Coonoor!

Take Nilgiri Railway Ride to Coonoor. If you are up for some adventure and scenic train ride, this one is one of the best experiences. Alternatively, you can drive down or take a bus to reach Coonoor.

The distance of Coonoor is about 20 km and travel time is about 45 minutes.

In case you are taking a toy train ride , the journey time is about 1 hour 15 minutes.

Coonoor is the second largest hill station in the Nilgiri ranges and is known for its lush green beauty. Coonoor has wonderful historical background as it has been home to the Toda tribe.

1. Tea Garden Coonoor

There are many tea estates in Coonoor. The two most popular ones are:

Highland Tea Factory. This 50-year old estate allows you to indulge in the aroma of freshly brewed tea. For more details, click here .

Coonoor Tea Estate. This is near Dolphin’s Nose. Just a little away from the Centre of the town lies this famous estate with surreal settings. The breathtaking backdrop will melt your heart! Click here to know more about this place.

You’ll see many tea stalls near tea estates as well. It is a place to taste your buds by sipping freshly brewed tea.

2. Lamb’s Rock

This is one of the most popular attractions in Conoor. If you admire nature, consider this place as a slice of heaven.

It is about 8 km from Coonoor. Go through a jungle-fringed road that wanders up to Lambs Rock.

There is a small view-point that offers sprawling views of the Coonoor hills and Coimbatore plains.

Pro Tip: For a more scenic view, go further a few steps down to Lady Canning’s Seat. The views are enthralling.

3. Dolphin’s Nose

Dolphin’s Nose is at 1000 feet above sea level. The road is a popular route that takes hairpin turns and a jaw-dropping viewpoint. Once you reach the spot, you’ll see 180 degrees view.

4. Sim’s Park

Visit this Japanese-style botanical garden that extends over an area of 12 hectares.

The huge manicured park has naturally occurring trees, shrubs and other varieties of plants. The beautiful park has a glasshouse with some medicinal plants.

The park holds the fruits and vegetable shows every year in May.

After sightseeing and spending some memorable time in Coonoor, return to Ooty.

5. Ooty Market

After you enjoy your Coonoor trip and train ride, stroll around the lively Ooty market for shopping and eating scrumptious food in the evening.

This charming hill station has lots to offer. Some of the things that you must try are:

Chocolates : Don’t miss handmade chocolates, which are rare treats of Ooty. The most popular location for chocolates is Charing Road . Visit one of the bakeries and grab your favourite chocolate.
Strawberries : For organically grown strawberries, Ooty is the best. You can find freshly grown strawberries in local stores.
Aromatic Oils : Ooty produces the best essential oils such as eucalyptus, camphor and citronella.
Tea : Nilgiris is a plantation district that is highly favourable for tea cultivation. You’ll find a variety of tea packets to choose from. Do give it a try.
If you are looking for strolling or shopping in the City, some of the popular shopping areas as Lower Bazaar Road (major shopping centre- from clothing to chocolates to jewellery), Higginbotham (for book lovers), Nilgiris Super Market (for freshly produced food items), Tibetan market (broad range of woollen clothes).

How To Reach

The market is about 2 km from the bus stand.

If you are staying near the bus stand, you can easily walk to the market. Alternatively, you can take an auto or cab to reach the market, depending on your location.

Today, you’ll spend the entire day in Kotagiri. Trust me, you can’t leave Ooty without exploring the untouched beauty of Kotagiri.

A town that is nestled in nature’s lap and surrounded by peace and tranquility.

This hilly retreat is one of the major hill stations in Nilgiris, and if you wish to explore an offbeat place near Ooty, add Kotagiri to your Ooty itinerary.

1. Catherine Falls

This lesser-known waterfall in Kotagiri is in its purest form.

Being the second-highest fall in Nilgiri hills, this place attracts nature lovers as it is an excellent place to be away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

You might not be able to take a dip or go close to the fall but drive to this place. The drive to reach this place is extremely scenic.

2. Kodanand View Point

Kodanand is a captivating village that is popular for its viewpoint.

From here, you can marvel at picturesque views of the Nilgiri mountains. In addition to appreciating the gorgeous views, you can also visit some tribal houses to experience something diverse.

Did you know that just 10 km away from the viewpoint, begins the famed estate of former Tamil Nadu CM, Jayalalitha? Her vast tea estate will blow your mind away.

3. Johnston Circle

There are many small outlets and bakeries at Johnston circle. Do not miss relishing cakes here and satisfying your sweet tooth.

Kotagiri does not have mainstream restaurants, but most of the small outlets and bakeries have their lunch menus. Do give it a try!

How To Reach Kotagiri

Kotagiri is at a distance of 29 km from Ooty. You can drive down to Kotagiri and enjoy the scenic views on the way.

If you are travelling by train, the main railway head is Coonoor. From Coonoor, Kotagiri is at a distance of 20 km.

Pro Tip: Depending upon the time in hand, you can tweak this itinerary by visiting Kotagiri on the day you are visiting Coonoor. In this case, spend a night in Kotagiri.

These best places are reserved for the last! Consider this as your offbeat experience.

Surrounded by swanky green mountains and flowers, Avalanche Lake is a picturesque place away for about 25 km from Ooty.

Avalanche Lake can be found at the entrance of Avalanche Forest Reserve. It takes about 1- 2 hours to reach Avalanche forest reserve. As the place is far away from Ooty, not many travellers visit this heaven. But trust me, it’s worth the visit.

It is on the way to Upper-Bhavani, and the gorgeous scenery at every turn is an experience to behold.

On your tour to Avalanche, you can explore the Cauliflower shola forest, Upper Bhavani Reservoir, and Bhavani temple.

After you finish seeing the places, you can spend some time at the Avalanche lakeshore. After spending for about few hours at Avalanche, leave for Emerald lake.

Parking: You’ll need to park your car near the forest check post. However, please drive your car cautiously. The road leading to the place is bumpy, and conditions aren’t great. Moreover, private vehicles are not allowed beyond forest check post point. The forest department runs vans and jeeps beyond this point for lake and forest tours.

This serene lake with blue water is around 5.5 km from Avalanche lake. You’ll take around 20 minutes to reach this beautiful place.

With endless greenery and peaceful vibes, this place is a part of the Silent Valley National Park.

The village is quite enchanting, and if you prefer spending time in a secluded area with a handful of locals, then this is a place for you.

Stroll around the tea gardens at the Emerald Lake.

Entry fee : There is no entry fee for visiting the Emerald lake/ dam. It is open for visitors from 6 am to 5 pm on all days.

Pro Tip: Please carry enough water and some food as there are no restaurants in the nearby area.

To be honest, Avalanche is a beautiful sight to hold and I definitely recommend to add this place to your Ooty Itinerary.

1. Toda Village

Toda community reside in small hamlets called Mund, which have barrel-shaped huts.

For centuries Toda people lived in isolation in the Nilgiris. The region was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012 due to its unique ecology and botanical diversity.

You can visit this village to learn about the culture, their lifestyle. The village also has the Toda temple that looks similar to Toda huts. I recommend adding Toda Village to your Ooty itinerary if you are open to exploring a different side of Ooty.

Toda village is located at a distance of 15 km from Ooty.

2. Go boating In Pykara Lake & Enjoy Safari At Madumalai National Park

Pykara Lake

Pykara is a village located 19 km from Ooty.

This may not be in a true sense an offbeat place to visit as Pykara is popular and attracts a lot of tourists. However, if time permits, then add this place to your Ooty itinerary.

Pykara lake is serene and surrounded by lush green forests. You can easily spend 2 hours here.

You’ll enjoy the experience.

Madumalai National Park

One of the tiger reserves in India, Madumalai National Park, is 30 km from Pykara Lake and 40 km from Ooty.

The park is divided into five sections and is home to Bengal tigers, Indian leopards, and many endangered species. Safari is the major attraction of this Park.

3. Pine Forest

This is one of the unique spots in Ooty.

The tall trees in the forest add up to the charm of this place.

The magnificent tall trees in the forest will make your jaws drop! Usually, the trees here grow from 3 to 80 meters tall. The sight will leave you amazed.

Pine Forest can be visited either on your way to Pykara or your journey back from Pyakara. Also, don’t expect this place to be empty.

The entry fee for the Pine Tree Forest is INR 5 for adults and an additional INR 30 for a camera.

4. Parson’s Valley Dam

This is the best-kept secret of Ooty and I suggest to add this place to your Ooty itinerary. If you are a nature lover, you’ll not regret visiting this place.

Surrounded by thick forest and rich fauna, this is a place where nature will roar with its enormous vigour.

Parsons Valley Dam is a Hydel Reservoir, which is the main water source for nearby towns of Nilgiri District. It is located about 18 km from Ooty.

Parson’s Valley Dam and the nearby areas are called Parson’s Valley. This is a reserved forest area and forms part of Mukurthi National Park. Therefore, it requires permission from the State Forest Department to visit the Parson’s Valley.

5. St Stephen’s Church

One of the oldest churches in Ooty, the foundation of St Stephen’s Church was laid in 1829 by Stephen Lushington, the then Governor of Madras.

The church features charming architecture and stained-glass windows in a magical wood setting.

This is a short stroll from the Ooty centre and is open every day.

6. Government Rose Garden

Ok, so this is not a hidden gem, but if time permits, visit this garden for beautifully laid out terraces of roses.

This is one of the most famous tourist spots. The place is perched on the slopes of the hills and is a perfect place for spending quality time with your family.

The entry fee for adults is INR 30, and for children below 10 years, the fee is INR 15.

You can add the place mentioned above to your Ooty itinerary as per your interest and time in hand.

Ooty is a cold place with majorly three different climate conditions.

April to June (Summer)

This is usually the peak time for tourists to visit the State. The weather during the day is hot and pleasant at night.

Ooty experiences light rainfall during May, infusing new life to flora and fauna.

The temperature ranges from 15 degrees Celcius to 25 degrees Celcius during summer.

July to October (Monsoon)

The monsoon usually starts from mid-July and is considered as offseason.

November to February (Winter)

The temperature during winters can go below 5 degrees Celcius.

The months of January and February are considered to be the coldest months.

Located at Walsham road, this cafe is established in 2003.

You must try their filter coffee! You can’t leave Ooty without tasting their filter coffee and Masala Dosa.

They serve the best hand-picked coffee beans direct from the plantations.

1. Jackets and woollens are needed throughout the year. Summers are relatively warmer but the nights are cooler. You can find some best deals on winter clothing here .

2. In addition to basic medical aid, carry motion sickness medicine. It is recommended for those prone to sickness on winding roads and high altitudes.

3. Carry an umbrella or raincoat to protect yourself from unexpected drizzles.

Ooty’s best season.

The best time to visit is during the months of March to June and September to November . Monsoon brings in a lot of rain in this town. Winters nights in January and February are the coldest. It was my long desired to have of the Ooty travel experience of what it feels to be on top of hills overseeing the valley . Here is an experience of Ooty with things to do & travel tips

BANGALORE TO OOTY

Bangalore to Ooty distance is 265 Km and travel time in bus takes 8 to 10 Hrs.

Bangalore –> Ramnagar –> Mandya –> SriRangapattna –> Mysore –> Nanjangud –> Gundlupet –> Bandipur–> Masinagudi — Ooty ( Approx 265 Km). The path has 36 Hairpin Bends from Masinagudi to Ooty.

Remember – Bandipur national forest is closed from 9 PM – 6 AM due to animals movements at night, plan your trip accordingly

OOTY & KODAIKANAL ROAD

The road distance between Ooty to Kodaikanal is 255 km (7Hrs). Ooty to Coimbatore takes almost 3 hrs; Coimbatore to Kodai Road is another 3.5 hrs; Kodai road to Kodaikanal will take another hour .

OOTY WEATHER & FORECAST

Job transfer to Bangalore from Mumbai only gave the needed thrust to have Ooty in “to do” list at the top and so utilizing the long weekend of spring 2014, the old dream got materialized.

My past travel experience in India to remote or widely known destinations gave me confidence that everything like the hotel, homestay, train, the bus will be completely booked or crowded, and this theory holds good during the weekend or extended holiday.

OUR STAY IN OOTY

It came out to be true after searching a few booking sites in few minutes; luckily I got an excellent deal for the perfect stay in hilltop property overlooking the valley called “ Sabol holidays ”. The property is located 10 km uphill from the main Ooty and offers the best experience for small or large groups.

The next search was for transportation , after lots of painful search on sites, I stumble on travelyaari whose service is highly focused on making bus journey a memorable experience for the traveler. Considering a long holiday weekend ahead, I booked the bus ticket for the return trip as well.

With the view of Nilgiri hills , we woke up at around 7 AM while we were about to reach Ooty. Situated at an altitude of about 2500 meters, Ooty with its lush green scenic beauty, lofty mountains, and the vast expanse of tea estates is a favored tourist spot.

Endowed with a wholesome climate , Ooty is an ideal destination for people seeking to while away sometime close to nature. After checking into Sabol holidays , we went out for sightseeing. The first place we paid a visit to was the Botanical Garden. Spread over 55 acres of land, Botanical Garden, is one of the most popular attractions of Ooty . The garden displays some rare species of trees including cork tree, monkey puzzle tree, and paperbark tree.

It’s a paradise for people who love to study various species of plants. The Ooty market will give you ample chance to fulfill your desire to do local shopping. Also, it’s recommended to try the local cuisine . One can spend the evening at Ooty lake. It covers an area of 65 acres.

The Boathouse situated by the lake, which offers boating facilities to tourists, is a major tourist attraction in Ooty. Do remember the evening and nights gets cooler or at times chilly, so recommended to carry woolens or sweatshirts to feel the warmth.

So either you can also stay in Coonoor and tour both the places. Sim’s Park is mainly a park with a small garden displaying varieties of shrubs, herbs, and ferns. It is useful for a morning walk or jogging and relaxing with friends under the shade of trees. Around ten km away from Coonoor lies the Dolphin’s Nose.

Dolphin’s Nose is a beautiful vantage point that provides the breathtaking view of the luscious green valley spread below. As the name suggests, a massive protruding rock formation resembling the nose of Dolphin is used as a viewpoint which gives an enticing panoramic view of the Catherine Falls, Kotagiri Hills, and Mettupalayam plains .

The way to Dolphin’s Nose is a bit perilous as the road and curvy. However, the side slopes covered with green tea vegetation looks mesmerizing as your car makes its way through the narrow road between.

Do stop by and photographed in the middle of tea estates, granted to give Hindi film experience. En route to Coonoor, you will find the spot where the famous “Chaiyya Chaiyaa” was shot, do stop by and take that prized selfie. You will find numerous tea /homemade chocolates shop, remember to taste those and take some back home, in a way you are helping the local community and economy to grow.

Next morning, we wake up early to catch the sunrise and the bird’s singing . It was so beautiful and lovely to admire nature at its best.

After having complimentary breakfast from the hotel, we checked out and headed to the bus stand. Our Volvo bus started from Ooty around 12 PM; we packed home-made chocolates and tea to share with our friends and office colleague. We reached Bangalore by 9 PM and straight away crashed onto our bed with the best memories of the bus trip.

Best Time to Visit Ooty

As a hill station, Ooty enjoys a cool and pleasant climate round the year. However, the best time to visit happens to be the summer months - from early March to early June, when the weather is absolutely at its best. Ooty enjoys a moderate rainfall during the monsoons and winters are not too harsh either. Though temperature may fall to 2°C or 3°C, despite that, exploring Ooty in winters has its own charm.

Ooty enjoys summer months from mid-March to June when the weather is pleasant. With temperature ranging from 21°C to 35°C, the weather is ideal to explore the beauty of Ooty. Needless to say, that the hill station attracts maximum number of tourists during these months.

Monsoons in Ooty spans from June to September and the region receives moderate to somewhat heavy rainfall during these months. While exploring around can become a little difficult because roads become slippery, however the vegetation around is lush green and at its best. So, if you want to explore luxuriant green side of the hills, you can head to Ooty during the monsoons.

Ooty experiences winters from October to end of February. The temperature falls down to as low as 2°C to 3°C making it very cold. However, if you do not mind the chilliness you can choose to travel to Ooty during the winters. Exploring the hill station during peak winters would be a different experience altogether.

One needs to pass through dense jungle to reach up to the Bhavani Lake and if you are lucky enough, you can end up spotting some avifauna on the way such as peacocks, parrots and wild cats.

Nilgiri Mountain Railways

The Nilgiri Mountain Railways are yet another prominent tourist attraction in Ooty. Opened to the public way back in 1908, the railways are an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The railway is 46 kilometres long and passes through many tunnels and numerous bridges. The ride is absolutely picturesque owing to the surrounding rocky terrains, tea plantations, ravines and forested hills. A ride on the Nilgiri Mountain Railways are an amazing experience altogether.

Emerald Lake

Located roughly 20 kilometres away from main Ooty, the Emerald Lake is a hidden treasure and a part of the Silent Valley National Park. This lesser-known gem is an ideal destination for travellers who are looking for a locale, far from the maddening crowd. The valleys surrounding the lake, enhances the beauty of the area. Of late, however the area has started becoming popular as a picnic spot.

Avalanche Lake

Yet another popular tourist destination in the Nilgiri mountain ranges, the Avalanche Lake offers astounding vistas of nature. Located a little away from the main Ooty city centre, the lake's surrounding areas make for an ideal camping site. Several beautiful flowers such as rhododendrons, magnolias and much more are abloom in the surrounding valleys. Travellers willing to camp at the site may carry a tent along with them.

Pykara Lake

Among the many lakes in Ooty, the Pykara Lake is a popular tourist attraction and offers majestic views of the nature around. Located between lush green valleys and deep forests, spending a few hours at the Pykara Lake will fill you up with an absolute sense of delight. There's a boat house located near the Pykara Dam that includes a rest house and restaurant where tourists can choose to relax.

St. Stephen's Church

The St. Stephen's Church is a major religious shrine in Ooty, known for its architectural grandeur. The shrine is flocked by thousands of devotees and travellers alike round the year. The church was built in the 19th century and was constructed to coincide the birthday of King George the IV. The marvel of British architecture is clearly relevant, and the church also houses a replica of the Last Supper.

Shooting Point

Acres of picturesque pasture welcomes you, as you head towards Shooting Point - Ooty's yet another major tourist attraction. The beautiful green meadows surrounded by a host of coniferous trees have been a favourite with many film directors including leading ones from Bollywood as well. Ketty Valley View

Ooty's another major attraction, the Ketty Valley View offers some amazing sights of its surrounding vistas comprising mountains and verdure valleys. The views from Ketty Valley spans from Mysore Valleys to the Coimbatore plains. The valley offers such stunning views that it is often referred to as mini Switzerland of south India. Nature lovers, adventure and experience seekers can have a great time at this beautiful locale.

Botanical Gardens

Spread over an area of 22 acres at the lower slopes of the Dodabetta Peak, Ooty's Government Botanical Garden is an amazing sight to behold. An array of beautiful flowers and trees will welcome you, as you step into the garden. The garden has a terraced layout and is maintained by the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department. The garden houses nearly thousands of species of plants - spanning across plants, shrubs, ferns, herbs and bonsai plants.

Sanctuary Avalanche

A forested wildlife reserve surrounded by the Nilgiri Mountain Ranges, the Sanctuary Avalanche is an amazing natural attraction of Ooty. The sanctuary is named after an avalanche that took place way back in 1823. Filled with Shola trees, rhododendrons and orchids, the natural wonder is absolutely astounding. The expanse also offers some trekking options as well. One can trek up to the adjoining hills to catch a bird's eye view of Ooty.

Pykara Falls

Gushing down at full speed from a great height, the Pykara Falls is a marvellous sight to behold. Adventure seekers and nature lovers can have an awesome time here as it is considered one of the best waterfalls in Ooty. It drops down in two sections with a height of 55 metres and 61 metres through multiple layers on the rocky bed. The waterfall shrouded, in forest is definitely a treat to the eyes.

Rose Garden

The Rose Garden is a prominent attraction of Ooty visited by thousands of travellers round the year. Spread over an area of 10 acres, the orchard is one of the biggest rose gardens in India. Arranged in curved terraces, the rose orchard houses more than hundred varieties of roses including miniature roses, hybrid tea roses, ramblers and much more. Many of the rose species were brought from several parts of the world including Australia.

Thunder World

A popular amusement park, the Thunder World is a prominent tourist destination in Ooty that attracts thousands of travellers all through the year. Often referred to as the Dinosaur Park, Thunder World houses models of several species of Dinosaurs. Needless to say, that the park is highly enjoyed by kids. Alternately, the use of sound and technology make the park seem like one-of-its kind in Ooty.

The Ooty Toy Train is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the hill station. Constructed over a century ago, the narrow-gauge railway runs from Metupalayyam to Coonnor and is one of the most majestic train journeys in the southern parts of the country. Owing to its popularity and uniqueness the Toy Train has been rated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Doddabetta Peak

Ooty's highest point and also the Nilgiri mountains' highest point-the Doddabetta peak happens to be the most popular tourist attractions in the region. Once at the point, discover vast fields of rhododendrons and a host of other herbs as you go about exploring the peak and its surroundings. Head to the telescope tower to gaze at the skyline of Ooty and look further to the sweeping forests of the Bandipur National Park.

Murugan Temple

Dedicated to Lord Murugan, the temple is located at Elk Hill. The biggest attraction here happens to be the 42-feet tall golden-coloured statue of Lord Murugan which is equally awe-inspiring. Since it is located on the Elk Mountains, the area offers amazing views of the surrounding vistas.

One of the many water bodies in the region, the Ooty Lake is a major attraction that draws several tourists round the year. The huge artificial lake was constructed in 1824 by a European named John Sullivan. Spanning an area of 65 acres, the lake is very popular as a boating point. Needless to say, several tourists are attracted to the spot every year. Surrounded the eucalyptus trees- the natural beauty of the tree is further enhanced.

Mudumalai National Park

Among hills and mountains, Ooty also has some hidden treasures such as the Mudumalai National Park that houses a substantial percentage of flora and fauna. Lying on the north-western side of the Nilgiri Mountains, the Mudumalai National Park is a must visit while on a tour of Ooty. Thread Garden

A popular tourist spot, the thread garden is a haven for those who love flowers and have a creative bend of mind. The garden is an innovative and amazing aesthetic creation of an artificial garden of flowers and plants all woven by threads. Interestingly, no needles were used in the process. The artificially embroidered garden bearing models of flowers with the use of self-developed technology and hand-woven embroidery has taken 12 years to complete and the effort of 50 women artists.

Located far from the madding crowd, the Cairn Hills are probably the least explored region of Ooty. Surrounded by dense forests all around, the Cairn Hills are home to some the best resorts in Ooty where high-end tourists often end up spending a relaxing weekend. Alternately, Cairn Hills is a great place to simply hang out or spend some time in the evening strolling around.

Just like Cairn Hills, the Elk Hills is yet another lesser-known wonder located in the mountains of the Ooty. The Elk Hills are known for its numerous hotels and resorts that offer an extensive array of amenities. How to Reach Ooty?

Since Ooty is a popular hill station of the country, it is accessible easily from the rest of the country through air, railways and even by road. A decent network of railways and road help you reach the Queen of the Hills.

The nearest airport to Ooty happens to be Coimbatore, located at a distance of 88 kilometres. Once you reach the airport, buses and cars are easily available that can take you to Ooty. Other options include Bengaluru and the Chennai airport from where trains and other local transports are available for Ooty.

While Coimbatore yet again happens to be the nearest railway junction, the Nilgiri Toy Train is also a good option to reach Ooty. The Toy Train can be availed from the Mettupalayam station (52 kms) that helps passengers reach Ooty.

Travelling to Ooty by road is also an amazing experience as several options are available from major cities in South India. Buses to Ooty ply from cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore. Alternately, travellers can choose to self-drive via National Highway (NH) 181 while travelling to Ooty from Coimbatore. On the other hand, travellers coming from Bengaluru, need to take State Highway 17 via Mysore.

How to Plan an Amazing Ooty Trip on a Budget

Best time to visit ooty.

One of the first things to plan your Ooty trip is to decide when you are going to visit this beautiful hill station. Although Ooty is a year-round destination, the best time to visit this place is during summers.

The weather stays cool and pleasant in the summer season and you can escape the summer heat of the neighboring cities. Monsoon season is also a good time to visit Ooty as you will experience lush greenery here but it will be cold.

For those who don’t like the cold, winter is certainly not the best time to visit Ooty. The temperature can drop to 6 degrees Celsius, making it cold for sightseeing and enjoying the activities here.

How to Reach Ooty

There are several ways to reach Ooty which we will be covering below.

The closest airport to Ooty is Coimbatore International Airport at a distance of 88 km. There are direct flights connecting this city to all the major cities in India.

The closest railway station to Ooty is Mettupalyam at a distance of 40 km. You will find trains from nearby cities to this station including Bangalore, Chennai, Mysore, and more.

For those who are traveling from a little further away, Coimbatore Railway Station is the best choice. From here, you can take a private cab or local bus to reach Ooty.

You can also opt for a road trip to Ooty from nearby cities. Apart from that, local and private buses are available from Bangalore, Chennai, Mysore, etc. to Ooty.

Ooty is a popular tourist destination so there are many stay options available here for people traveling on all kinds of budgets.

If you happen to plan a trip during the peak season then make sure that you book your stay in advance.

Although there weren’t any hostels in Ooty a couple of years, it is not the case anymore. There are 2-3 backpacker hostels that are perfect for solo travelers and budget backpackers.

In fact, there is also a Zostel franchise here which you can choose for your stay in Ooty.

Most of the hostels range between 400 – 600 INR and are a good way to meet other solo travelers and backpackers.

Hotels and Resorts

In case you are traveling with a group or need your privacy then there are several good hotels and resorts here as well. You can easily find a good hotel room for 2 people costing you about 600 – 1500 per night.

And if you want to avoid the city area and want to stay in a quieter area in Ooty then Delightz Inn Resort is certainly a good place to stay at.

Where to Eat in Ooty

One of the best things about a trip to Ooty is that there are lots of amazing places here where you can eat a decent meal at a reasonable price.

Also, you get all kinds of cuisines here. But if you traveling to Ooty then make sure you try the South Indian cuisine because their sambhar is freaking delicious!

Local Restaurants

There are many local food joints and restaurants that you can try out when hungry in Ooty. Make sure you try Idli and Dosa here as they will be cheap and extremely appetizing.

In fact, you can easily get a good dosa or Idli plate for just 50 – 70 INR. And the varieties that you get in dosa will completely blow your mind and will make you want to try out all kinds of dosas available here.

Moddy’s Confectionery

Apart from the delicious South Indian dishes, Ooty is also quite famous for its chocolates. And Moddy’s is one of the most popular chocolate brands to check out in Ooty.

They have an assortment of chocolate flavors that you can try and select from. But that’s not all, they also offer snacks like patties, pizzas, etc. for people who are hungry after selecting chocolates for themselves.

Other Options

They also have some other commercial establishments like CCD, Dominos, etc.

So, if you are craving some coffee or pizza you can always head out to them. Although we would suggest you stick to the local cuisine so that you get a real feel of Ooty.

How to Travel In and Around Ooty

When you are planning an Ooty trip, then it is quite obvious that you will go sightseeing at some point. It may be to the places residing inside Ooty or places which are near Ooty.

Thankfully, there are many ways for you to travel around Ooty and make the most of your stay here.

Personally, I feel the best way to explore real Ooty and other Nilgiri Hills destinations is by taking a bus.

There is a good bus network here so you will find a bus for each place near Ooty like Kotagiri, Kodanadu, Coonoor, and so on. Also, the buses are cheap and quite convenient if you know where you are heading.

The only problem with taking a bus is that you have to plan your day in advance.

Most of the buses are available at a particular timing and often result in waiting so you can end up wasting a lot of time here.

A bus from the Ootacamund bus stand to Dodabetta will cost around 10 INR while a bus to Kotagiri will be around 25 INR.

If you don’t have a lot of time with you then the best and most convenient way to explore Ooty is by hiring a cab here. It can be expensive if you are traveling solo or with just 1 friend but it can be really useful when traveling in a group.

A tour to Avalanche Lake, Emerald Lake, etc. will cost you around 2,000 INR and will take at least 6-7 hours.

A tour of the Kotagiri side will also take 2,000 INR and will take almost the entire day.

So, if you do take a cab make sure that you have a few people to share the costs with else it can become really expensive for you.

If you are traveling in the town itself then the best way to explore the place is by walking. Most of the places are nearby and can easily be reached after an hour of walking.

Also, you get to admire the tea plantations and the mountain views and can stop wherever you like on the way.

For people traveling in the city, another convenient and quick mode of transportation is taking an auto.

It is great for short distances but it can cost you a lot as well. But if you don’t want to spend a lot of time walking then taking an auto is the best way to explore this hill station.

Shopping in Ooty

If you are doing an Ooty trip on a budget, then, of course, you have to be careful about what you shop here too. Thankfully, Ooty is famous for a few things like homemade chocolates, tea leaves, herbal oils, etc. that you can get at a reasonable price here.

In terms of clothing, Ooty is one of the best places to buy woolen clothes. From caps to gloves, you can find it all here at an affordable price.

For tea and coffee lovers, Ooty has many shops that serve a variety of teas and coffee products. You can get these in different flavors such as black, green, masala, jasmine, cardamom, and even chocolate.

Apart from that, you can also buy aromatic oils such as lavender, lemongrass, camphor, eucalyptus, etc. which have medicinal purposes and are good for your hygiene.

Finally, to tickle your taste buds, you cannot miss out on shopping for homemade chocolates here. There are many shops with a wide range of chocolate varieties for you to choose from.

Overall, you can easily spend 2000 – 3000 INR on shopping in Ooty.

ATM and Network Availability on Ooty Trip

Let’s discuss one of the most crucial aspects of traveling, ATM and Phone Network availability.

ATMs in Ooty

Since Ootacamund has developed a lot in the past few years, more ATM options have cropped up all over the hill station. So, you will easily find an ATM for IDBI, Indian Bank, SBI, etc. in Ooty.

However, during the long weekends, the cash could be low in these ATMs so it is always a good idea to withdraw cash from Coimbatore or your native place before reaching Ooty.

Also, if you don’t have your own vehicle then reaching these ATMs can be a pain if you don’t live near the main market area.

Always carry a decent amount of cash when traveling to Ooty.

Network Available in Ooty

Most major mobile networks work in Ooty including Vodafone, Airtel, JIO, BSNL, etc. However, in some areas, you will get only BSNL or JIO network.

Even Airtel’s 4G service is patchy in Ooty and there are a lot of spots where there is literally no signal in both Airtel or Vodafone network.

So, if you are in dire need of an Internet network on your trip to Ooty then carry a BSNL or JIO sim with you.

Ooty might not be as peaceful and serene as it was at one time but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t charming or beautiful places to visit here anymore.

Honestly, there are so many amazing things to do in Ooty that you can easily spend a couple of days here and still be short on time.

So, make sure that you do visit the offbeat places here and enjoy the Queen of hill stations.
