IELTS Essay: Choosing a Job

This is an IELTS writing task 2 sample answer from the general training exam on the topic of choosing a job.

Jobs come up all the time in the general training exam!

Some people say young people should be completely free to choose their future job but others think young people must be more realistic in their choice.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Many are of the view that young people should prioritise pragmatic career choices over their passions. In my opinion, youth is an opportunity to follow pursuits with a low probability of success.

Many parents in particular are heavily invested in the idea of security. This is often the case if they had a difficult upbringing or were born into times of national upheaval. For example, many parents in Vietnam who grew up immediately after the American War, are still scarred by their experiences of deprivation. As a result, it is a common refrain in Vietnam these days for young people to complain about how much control their parents have over their choice of a major or career. Most students consequently work in safe, tedious fields like finance, banking, advertising, and law. They have job security and a basic floor on their earning potential in the event of an economic downturn.

However, failing at a particular career path early in life does not foreclose future success. Most can major in a subject they love, work for several years in that field and the likely results will either be some degree of success or modest failure. If they fail, it is possible to move on in one’s twenties to study or work towards a safer, more lucrative position. This attempt is also justified by the rare instances of tremendous achievement including famous actors, directors, singers, and other artists. Therefore, choosing a career freely can be vindicated by the combination of potential fame, less transcendent but still respectable jobs, and the ability to transition to a new career before middle age.

In conclusion, the allure of security does not outweigh the myriad advantages of freely choosing a career one. Parents and students should both heed this advice or risk regretting the missed opportunity.

How to Choose your Career?

You must consider a number of factors before deciding on your career. Each factor plays a significant role in your choice. Firstly, always assess yourself thoroughly. You must understand your area of interest to choose a career. For instance, someone who dances well can surely become a doctor, but his interest will always be in dance. Thus, ensure that you have the caliber to perform well in the field you choose. This will come from your area of interest itself.

Essay on Factors To Consider When Choosing A Career

Students are often asked to write an essay on Factors To Consider When Choosing A Career in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Factors To Consider When Choosing A Career

Understanding the topic.

Choosing a career is a big decision. It’s about picking what you’ll do for most of your day, for many years. It’s important to choose wisely. Here are some factors you should think about when choosing a career.

First, think about what you like to do. Your career should be something you enjoy. If you like what you do, you’ll be more likely to do a good job and be happy in your work.

Next, consider your skills. What are you good at? Choose a career that uses these skills. This will make your work easier and more enjoyable.

Also, think about what is important to you. Do you care about helping others? Making money? Being creative? Choose a career that matches your values.

250 Words Essay on Factors To Consider When Choosing A Career

Understanding your interests.

Choosing a career is a very important decision in one’s life. The first factor to consider is your interests. What do you enjoy doing? What are your hobbies? These questions can guide you to a career that you will love and enjoy. It is always better to work in a field that you are passionate about.

Assessing Your Skills

Next, consider your skills. What are you good at? Maybe you are good at drawing, or maybe you are good at solving math problems. Your skills can help you decide on a career. For example, if you are good at drawing, you might want to consider a career in graphic design.

Looking at the Job Market

Another important factor is the job market. You need to research and see if there are jobs available in the career you are considering. If there are no jobs, it might not be a good idea to pursue that career.

Considering the Education Required

Lastly, consider the education required for the career. Some careers require a lot of schooling, while others do not. You need to decide if you are willing to spend the time and money on the education required for the career.

In conclusion, choosing a career is a big decision. By considering your interests, skills, the job market, and the education required, you can make a good decision that will lead to a fulfilling career.

500 Words Essay on Factors To Consider When Choosing A Career

Introduction.

Firstly, think about what you enjoy doing. If you pick a career based on your interests, you will likely be happier and more successful. For example, if you love music, you might want to consider a career as a musician or a music teacher. When you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work.

Skills and Talents

Secondly, consider your skills and talents. What are you good at? If you’re great at math, a career in engineering or accounting might be a good fit for you. If you’re a good listener and love to help people, you might want to consider a career in counseling or social work. It’s always easier to do a job that matches your skills.

Educational Requirements

Fourthly, take a look at the job market. Is there a demand for the career you’re interested in? Some careers have more job opportunities than others. For example, careers in technology and healthcare often have a lot of job openings. It’s important to choose a career where you can find a job easily.

Work-Life Balance

Lastly, consider work-life balance. Some careers require long hours and may not leave much time for family or hobbies. On the other hand, some careers offer flexible hours or the ability to work from home. It’s important to choose a career that fits with the lifestyle you want.

What Is a Career Essay?

A career essay is a text people write to detail their goals or plans for the future. In this essay, people talk about the career they want in the future and the things they have achieved so far. People often ask you to write a career essay when you send an application letter for a scholarship or submit your resume for a job.

How To Write a Rousing Career Essay

You should write your career essay seriously because it might be a deciding factor for your future. That said, in writing your essay, there are a lot of things to consider and a process you need to follow. Your end goal in writing your essay is to convince people that you are determined to walk the talk and make the things you wrote in your descriptive essay to reality.

1. Devise an Engrossing Title

The first thing to think about when writing an essay is coming up with an attention-grabbing title. When people read your essay, they pay the most attention to your title. Also, another benefit of coming up with your title first is that it will serve as a guide for you for the whole essay.

2. Introduce With a Hook

After devising a title, deliver the next blow with an introduction that piques their curiosity. To do that, begin your essay with a hook. Your hook can be a quote, a question, or you can even provide a statistic. If your introduction is good enough, it will secure the engagement of your readers.

3. Organize Your Ideas

Writing an essay is like taking your readers for a ride. You need to set the vibe and organize the flow of your thoughts. Don’t start too strong it might make the rest of your essay bland. You need to properly build up the development of excitement and make sure the order of your ideas makes sense.

4. Polish Your Essay

Finalize your essay by proofreading it. When people talk about their passion, they tend to talk too much and include several unnecessary things. Make sure not to do that. Omit all the details that don’t contribute to the overall impact of your reflective essay. Also, don’t forget to review your text for grammatical errors.

Why is career planning important?

People hustle every day to reach their dream careers. Having a target career gives you a direction and sets your path. Planning your career is essential because being indecisive about it might negatively impact your life. Not having a fixed goal is like not having an end destination. Preparing for it would also make your career action plan achievable.

What is a career genogram?

A career genogram traces back an individual’s family tree and examines the career timeline they pursued. The scope of this genogram reaches the grandparents, extended family, and even the person’s close friends. This graphic representation is helpful when a person has a hard time deciding about his or her career development plan .

What is career assessment?

Career assessment is the process of identifying what career would work best for you. Most assessments are in the form of a questionnaire . It includes questions about your interests, your skills, your hobbies, and your strengths. These are some examples of questions that would help assess your future career. The result of your career assessment might give you ideas on what path to take.

The moment people read your career essay, they often rate how likely you are to succeed. Show them a piece of your mind that would erase all their doubts about your success. They say manifesting works wonders, so manifest the future that you want best by composing a rousing career essay.

Sample Essay 1

Asserting that salary is the foremost criterion in job selection is overly simplistic and narrow. This essay argues that factors such as job satisfaction, work-life balance, and personal growth are considerably more influential than financial benefits. These elements will be thoroughly examined in this essay to illustrate their superior influence on career decisions.

Job satisfaction is a critical determinant of career choice, often overshadowing salary in its importance. It encompasses not only the enjoyment derived from daily tasks but also the profound sense of achievement felt when one's work resonates with their personal values. This is particularly evident in the non-profit sector, where employees frequently accept lower wages for the profound fulfillment gained from making a tangible societal impact. Research from the University of Michigan corroborates this, revealing that workers in this sector report higher job satisfaction levels compared to their corporate peers, despite lower financial compensation. This underscores the significant value of intrinsic rewards in a job, which can far outweigh the financial benefits, enhancing employee loyalty and job retention.

Furthermore, work-life balance and personal growth are indispensable factors in a satisfying career, often surpassing salary in employee surveys. Modern workers, especially millennials, value flexible working conditions that allow them to manage personal and professional commitments seamlessly, alongside opportunities for personal and professional development. For example, companies like Google not only offer competitive salaries but also foster a culture that promotes personal growth and work-life harmony. This is achieved through various perks such as comprehensive wellness programs and opportunities for ongoing education. These benefits attract and retain employees who prioritize personal development and well-being over mere monetary rewards, contributing to a more dynamic and innovative workforce.

In conclusion, while salary is an important aspect of job selection, it is far from being the most crucial factor. Job satisfaction, work-life balance, and opportunities for personal growth play more decisive roles in shaping career choices. By prioritizing these factors over salary, individuals are more likely to experience fulfillment and long-term success in their professional lives, affirming that the best career decisions are made beyond the paycheck.

Sample Essay 2

When selecting a job, many factors come into play, such as salary, job satisfaction, and career growth. The assertion of stating salary is the most important factor is an oversimplification. While salary plays a significant role, I believe other factors, including job satisfaction and career advancement opportunities are equally crucial.

Firstly, job satisfaction is a vital element that can outweigh the appeal of a high salary. Individuals spend a substantial portion of their lives at work, if the nature of work is unfulfilling and stressful, it can lead to burnout and poor mental health. For instance, if a software engineer works in a top tech firm with a high salary but finds the work tedious and corporate culture toxic, the level of happiness and productivity might suffer. A career path that provides personal fulfillment and aligns with one’s passion can lead to a more balanced and content life.

Secondly, career growth and opportunities for professional development are crucial considerations. A job that provides training, mentoring and a clear path for advancement is more beneficial than staying in a high-pay position with limited promotion opportunities in the long run. For example, a junior marketing professional may prefer to work in a smaller firm that offers plenty of hands-on experience and chances to climb the corporate ladder over a higher salary job with fewer opportunities for advancement. This strategic choice of career will lead to greater job satisfaction and higher salary in the future.

However, it is essential to acknowledge why some people consider salary the most important factor. In many cases, individuals have substantial financial responsibilities, such as supporting family, paying off student loans and saving for the future. Having a high-paying job can offer financial security, improve living standard, and reduce stress related to economic uncertainty. For example, a single parent may prioritize salary when choosing a job, so he or she can afford better education and a more comfortable lifestyle for the children. In the case when people need immediate and tangible benefits, salary is the most significant factor over others.

In conclusion, while salary is an essential consideration when selecting a job, it should not be viewed as the most important one. Job satisfaction and career growth hold equal importance, which will lead to a more balanced and sustainable professional life.

Sample Essay 3

While salary is often considered a pivotal factor when choosing a job, it should not be seen as the sole criterion. This essay contends that while remuneration plays a significant role, other factors such as job satisfaction and career progression are equally crucial. The ensuing discussion will delve into the balance between financial incentives and personal fulfillment in the workplace.

Salary undeniably holds substantial allure, offering immediate and quantifiable benefits. High earnings not only provide financial security but also furnish opportunities for a better quality of life, including access to superior healthcare and educational advantages for one’s family. For instance, a survey by Forbes highlighted that employees with higher wages report feeling significantly less stress about daily expenses, which directly impacts their mental well-being and overall life satisfaction. However, this monetary focus can sometimes overshadow other crucial job attributes such as work culture and personal fulfillment, leading to dissatisfaction if these aspects are not met. Such a singular focus on salary might fulfill short-term financial needs but neglects the broader aspects of career satisfaction that contribute to long-term happiness and engagement.

Conversely, factors such as job satisfaction and opportunities for professional growth often yield long-term contentment that salary alone cannot guarantee. Job satisfaction originates not only from engagement and passion for one’s duties but also from a positive work environment and alignment with personal values and career goals. For example, a study by Harvard Business Review noted that individuals in careers aligned with their interests and values are more likely to exhibit higher job performance and lower turnover rates. This alignment enhances their sense of accomplishment and belonging—a fulfillment that high salaries cannot always replicate. Additionally, such satisfaction fosters a deeper commitment to one's role, reducing the likelihood of job-hopping and building a more stable and productive career trajectory.

In conclusion, while salary is undoubtedly important and provides fundamental financial support, it is not the sole factor to consider when choosing a job. Job satisfaction and career growth also hold substantial weight and can lead to more sustainable long-term happiness and productivity. Therefore, it is essential to strike a balance between financial benefits and personal fulfillment to achieve a truly rewarding career.

8 Steps to Choosing a Career

DAWN ROSENBERG MCKAY

With thousands of options, how will you  choose a career  that’s right for you? If you don’t have any idea what you want to do, the task may seem insurmountable. Fortunately, it isn’t. Follow an organized process and you will increase your chances of making a good decision.

1. Assess Yourself

Before you can choose the right career, you must learn about yourself. Your values, interests, soft skills, and aptitudes, in combination with your personality type, make some occupations a good fit for you and others completely inappropriate.

Use  self-assessment tools , and  career tests  to gather information about your traits and, subsequently, generate a list of occupations that are a good fit based on them. Some people choose to work with a  career counselor or other career development professionals who can help them navigate this process.

2. Make a List of Occupations to Explore

You probably have multiple lists of occupations in front of you at this point—one generated by each of the self-assessment tools you used. To keep yourself organized, you should combine them into one master list.

First, look for careers that appear on multiple lists and copy them onto a blank page. Title it “Occupations to Explore.” Your  self-assessments  indicated they are a good fit for you based on several of your traits, so they’re definitely worth exploring.

Next, find any occupations on your lists that appeal to you. They may be careers you know a bit about and want to explore further. Also, include professions about which you don’t know much. You might learn something unexpected.

3. Explore the Occupations on Your List

At this point, you’ll be thrilled you managed to narrow your list down to only 10 to 20 options. Now you can get some basic information about each of the occupations on your list.

Find  job descriptions  and educational, training, and licensing requirements in published sources. Learn about advancement opportunities. Use government-produced  labor market information to get data about earnings and job outlook.

4. Create a “Short List”

Now you have more information, start to narrow down your list even further. Based on what you learned from your research so far, begin eliminating the careers you don’t want to pursue any further. You should end up with two to five occupations on your “short list.”

If your reasons for finding a career unacceptable are non-negotiable, cross it off your list. Remove everything with duties that don’t appeal to you. Eliminate careers that have weak  job outlooks . Get rid of any occupation if you are unable or unwilling to fulfill the educational or other requirements, or if you lack some of the soft skills necessary to succeed in it.

When you have only a few occupations left on your list, start doing more in-depth research. Arrange to meet with people who work in the occupations in which you are interested. They can provide firsthand knowledge about the careers on your short list. Access your  network , including LinkedIn, to find people with whom to have these  informational interviews .

Finally, after doing all your research, you are probably ready to make your choice. Pick the occupation that you think will bring you the most satisfaction based on all the information you have gathered. Realize that you are allowed do-overs if you change your mind about your choice at any point in your life. Many people  change their careers at least a few times.

7. Identify Your Goals

Once you make a decision, identify your  long- and short-term goals . This helps to chart a course toward eventually landing work in your chosen field. Long-term goals typically take about three to five years to reach, while you can usually fulfill a short-term goal in six months to three years.

Let the research you did about required education and training be your guide. If you don’t have all the details, do some more research. Once you have all the information you need, set your goals. An example of a long-term goal would be completing your education and training. Short-term goals include applying to college, apprenticeships, other training programs, and internships.

8. Write a Career Action Plan

Put together a  career action plan ,  a written document that lays out all the steps you will have to take to reach your goals. Think of it as a road map that will take you from point A to B, then to C and D. Write down all your short- and long-term goals and the steps you will have to take to reach each one. Include any anticipated barriers that could get in the way of achieving your goals—and the ways you can overcome them.

This may sound like a lot of work—and it is. But it’s much easier to forge a career path when you know what you want. Taking these steps early will save you a lot of struggle and uncertainty in the long run.

How to Make Better Decisions About Your Career

  • Timothy Yen

choosing a job essay

No, it doesn’t involve a Magic 8-Ball.

Making decisions is hard — especially when you’re trying to make big career decisions. This five-step framework can help you focus on what’s important.

  • What are your feelings telling you? Think about the kind of work you’re doing now, or the kind of work you’re planning to do. Brainstorm and jot down ideas of different careers you’re considering. What feelings come up?
  • What matters to you? Take a psychological assessment or complete an exercise that will help you identify your values.  Understanding your values will allow you to make choices that align directly with the things you care about.
  • What matters to other people? Just as it’s important to get clear on what matters to you, it’s also important to consider how your decision will impact your loved ones. Ask them for their own thoughts, input, and feelings.
  • What is the reality of the situation? Be objective and consider the realities surrounding your options, not your assumptions. Otherwise, you might end up having false expectations or feeling disappointed by your choices.
  • How do I put the pieces together? Once you’ve answered these four questions, review all the information you’ve just discovered. You should come to your final decision. If you don’t revisit the previous steps.

Picking your college major, choosing the perfect career, trying to decide if you should leave your job and move to a new one — decisions like these can feel daunting. We all spend a huge amount of time at work, and we all want (and deserve) to love what we do. But the path to finding that work isn’t always clear.

Include an introduction and conclusion

A conclusion is essential for IELTS writing task 2. It is more important than most people realise. You will be penalised for missing a conclusion in your IELTS essay.

The easiest paragraph to write in an essay is the conclusion paragraph. This is because the paragraph mostly contains information that has already been presented in the essay – it is just the repetition of some information written in the introduction paragraph and supporting paragraphs.

The conclusion paragraph only has 3 sentences:

  • Restatement of thesis
  • Prediction or recommendation

To summarize, a robotic teacher does not have the necessary disciple to properly give instructions to students and actually works to retard the ability of a student to comprehend new lessons. Therefore, it is clear that the idea of running a classroom completely by a machine cannot be supported. After thorough analysis on this subject, it is predicted that the adverse effects of the debate over technology-driven teaching will always be greater than the positive effects, and because of this, classroom teachers will never be substituted for technology.

Start your conclusion with a linking phrase. Here are some examples:

  • In conclusion
  • To conclude
  • To summarize
  • In a nutshell

Several factors are considered for job selection like experience, benefits, learnings, workplace environment, and salary. Personally, I feel salary is an important factor, but not the most important one.

Salary and benefits are undoubtedly important. For instance, an individual will dedicate greater efforts to his work if he feels fairly compensated. But there is more to a job than salary. Some people prefer a lower-paying job because of the exposure and prestige it gives. Furthermore, such jobs offer the possibility of meeting certain people of high society and dealing with different and relevant matters that require solutions. For instance, working as an intern in a top-rated law firm may earn you less compared to establishing your own law firm but will reward you in terms of learnings, exposure and contacts.

A company rewards its employees in ways other than money, like a good workplace environment and employee benefits. For instance, an employee would be thrilled to work in a setting where he is not working till he feels burned out, and the hierarchy actively takes inputs of the subordinates as to how daily functioning can be improved.

On the contrary, salary also bears certain importance. If an employee is given a posh remuneration, he will be able to solidify his future, improve his lifestyle and facilitate those dependent on him in a better way. But, what is the benefit of a job which gives you a lot of money but zero satisfaction? That person might even quit the company if he feels undervalued and overworked.

Hence, salary may be a significant component of a job, but it is not an all-important consideration when choosing a job.

Salary is one of the most significant elements to consider when deciding between jobs because it is the ultimate reward for the work done and plays a vital part in job selection. However, I do not believe that salary is the most significant factor to consider when choosing a job because job satisfaction and career progression are equally important aspects to consider. The following essay will elucidate my opinions.

To begin with, salary cannot be the sole consideration when selecting a job because job satisfaction is also critical. As a result, most people place a high value on job fulfillment overpay. Work-life balance, quality of work, working hours, perks and benefits, work environment, and vacation are some significant factors. Job satisfaction has been scientifically proven to boost people’s happiness and well-being. For example, a person who earns less money will be happier than someone who earns a lot of money but is under a lot of stress and pressure at work. As a result, job satisfaction should be taken into account when choosing a job.

Furthermore, when it comes to choosing a job, people place a great value on career advancement. Other components of career growth that impact a person’s future career path include promotions, new skills, and increasing job responsibilities. For example, some people want to advance in their careers, so they choose jobs that provide prospects for advancement, even if they are only paid a few dollars. In another instance, if a job pays an astronomical salary, but the working condition and environment are pathetic, then it isn’t very smart of the individual to take such jobs. Thus, a job that pays a little less but offers better working circumstances is a far better option.

Salary is indeed the most critical aspect because no other factor has a more significant impact on a person’s life or lifestyle than money. A good salary also improves a person’s self-esteem and social position. However, I believe that salary alone cannot provide contentment because what good is a well-paying job if it does not provide career advancement or satisfaction? Thus, essential facts such as working hours, working environment, and job happiness should be taken into account when selecting a decent job.

To sum up, I believe that remuneration shouldn’t be the only factor. Individuals should consider other parameters like working conditions and hours, career growth, and satisfaction while choosing between jobs. Thus, it is prudent to be mindful of the employment choices by weighing all facets of the job equally.

Choosing a career is a personal decision, though one can get information or consult professionals. This is a very sensitive decision to make, since it determines your happiness, job satisfaction and career development (Tingstad 34). The following steps can be followed in making a good career choice.

Step 1: Self Assessment

Before making any career choice, first learn about yourself. You should be able to know your values, personal interests as well as skills, which in combination with some certain personal traits, this will make some careers to fit you and others to be inappropriate. Make use of career tools, to collect the information and, consequently, make a list of various occupations that deems suitable. On this level, one can choose to engage counselors or professionals to help them administer these tests, a bigger number do opt to make use of career tests available on the web. At this stage, one should be able to know his/ her leisure time, flexibility of work schedule, salary due to needs, motivational drives, interpersonal relationship, prestige, security etc. This helps in classifying the occupation that one need (Choosing a Career).

Step2: List of the Selected Occupations to Explore

Look over the occupations listed during career tests. In order to eliminate some, circle the ones that you had considered previously and they are appealing to you. Write them separately in order to explore them. In exploring, look at the job description as well as other requirements needed, advancement opportunities, job outlook and earnings. To illustrate this, one may not enjoy duties of a particular career and may deny him/her happiness, job satisfaction of which he/she may opt to change the career in future. The earnings can be lower than thought; also the job outlook may not look promising. This reduces your lists of occupation.

Step 3: Carry Out Informational Interviews

For the short list, gather in-depth information. Interview some people with first hand information about such career. If a doctor, arrange to meet and interview him/her the requirements or qualifications needed. Enquire the job demand, codes and ethics, commitment and sacrifices to be made etc.  Check these results from your research against what you know about yourself, to see whether it can be suitable to you. Some jobs may require a degree as a qualification of which one is not willing to put time and energy to prepare, while others, their earning may not be as expected (Guidance for choosing a career).

Step 4: Goals Setting

The career that you have chosen, begin to set goals be it short or long term.  Put a good plan for yourself, this plan will enable you to make some decisions on how to achieve and pursue the goals. Here one may plan how to acquire the knowledge needed, time taken, career growth and development as well as funds required.

Step 5: Train For the Career

There is a possibility that you will be required to train for the chosen career. This may take pursuing a degree, internship or take a course which will enable you learn new skills. After training is over join a company or an institution and work.

This method of choosing a career does help a lot, it eliminates regrets and change of career in future. One is able to take a career that suits his personality and therefore happiness and job satisfaction is achieved.

Passion vs Money: Should You Choose a Job You Love or One That Pays?

Picture of UOTP Marketing

choose a job you love or one that pays

Passion vs. money—this is an internal debate that everyone has at some point in their life. On one side, you probably hear parents, relatives, or even strangers advising you to be realistic and find a job that pays well . But on the other side, there are friends or even TED talks of successful people telling you that “following your passion is the secret of success.”

And, only naturally, you feel stressed, confused and anxiously question whether you should follow your passion blindly with little chance to get money from it or choose a career that you don’t even like just because the job itself seems promising for your future .

But, even so, following your desires can leave a sense of well-being and happiness in everything you do. While there is no doubt that this is a question of opportunity and the hand you’ve been dealt with, following one’s passion seems more appealing to most.  However, should you choose a job you love or one that pays? Let’s explore more.

Benefits of Choosing a Career You Love

advantages-of-pursuing-your-passion

In the world we live in today, money is definitely a powerful tool, but choosing to chase it often comes at the price of not being able to do something you love and look forward to every day.

This ancient dilemma is by no means black and white; there are many benefits to a dream job. It is worth noting that should you choose to pursue your passion, workdays will seem less monotonous, and there won’t be a dull feeling washing over you when the alarm clock rings. The phrase, “Choose a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life,” may seem like a washed-out cliche, but it does hold some truth in it.

In terms of higher motivation , doing the job more effortlessly and passionately, you can see how that sentence got so famous. It’s true that a day of work still remains a day of work, however, the small factors in and around it do change and ultimately have an impact on our overall sense of self. Here are some:

1. Career growth

Growth in a career is more probable when the job consists of things that motivate you. You won’t simply be finishing tasks and not thinking about them, nor waiting for the clock to strike five (if you’re doing a 9 to 5 job), so you can leave your workplace.

It seems like a minor thing, but it plays a vital role in how far you go in your career. Hence you will be looking for more creative ways to do your job and spot details that you wouldn’t have if you didn’t put your heart into it.

2. Being passionate about work

Being passionate is directly linked to being productive. If it really is something you’re passionate about, there is a sense of being content with what you have accomplished during the work hours and beyond. The by-product of your work will be something you take pride in, and that will serve in giving you a reason to keep doing it.

3. Motivation

Obviously, loving what you do brings in motivation because it is activated by your own desires rather than material gains. Oftentimes in life, we can find ourselves lacking the motivation to do anything, but if someone presents us with something we enjoy, it will possibly make us get out of bed and get working.

HuffPost tells the tale of Richard Weinberg , a man who found that salsa was his passion at 49 years old. This discovery led to him participating in multiple dance categories, and it gave him a sense of purpose in his life.

4. Better health

How much you enjoy your job primarily affects your mental health, as doing something you don’t like on a daily will eventually start to consume you and you will get burnout . On the other hand, doing something you enjoy waking up for in the morning can help you not only feel better but even get lost in the work if you’re having problems in other areas of your life .

According to a study , the time spent engaging in our passions contributes to lower stress and our happiness. Your work can be some sort of an escape. And when it plays out like this, your productivity may increase due to the focus you shift on your job.

5. Pleasure in the work environment

It’s no secret that a career you’re passionate about will, in most cases, provide you with a more pleasurable work environment. Chances are that your coworkers will be like-minded, and besides the working part, you’ll have fun during the hours spent interacting with them.

Even without that, there is comfort in spending time in a place that has intentions that coincide with yours.

6. Fulfillment

It goes without saying that you feel fulfilled when you work on something meaningful to you. And especially after achieving the end goal of it. Obstacles you find on your way won’t be as relevant because you will always find a creative way around them.

We spend most of our days working, and that alone should be a reason to follow something that leaves us with a feeling of satisfaction during the hours we put in.

Disadvantages of Doing What You Love

As with anything in life, choosing to follow your dream has another side to the coin. While it can turn into something beautiful and life-changing, there’s also the possibility of not being in tune with the current market. Thus, either not allowing you to make a living out of it or make as much as you would ideally want.

According to Forbes , when we tell people to follow their passion, we assume they have one, which is not always the case. There are people whose passions change over time, and that is entirely normal. Plus, you can have interests that aren’t necessarily something you love but merely something you find appealing and intriguing that can also serve as a money-making career.

Now, although it is mostly a personal issue whether you choose to chase your dreams or focus on a career relevant to today’s market, here are some disadvantages of doing what you love.

1. Your passion might turn into a job

This is a big risk when you start pursuing your dream. We know that work can sometimes be stressful, and it may seem as if deadlines are hovering over our heads, and that treads dangerously close to turning us against our passion. At some point, your passion may not be something you do for yourself, but something that brings in the paycheck at the end of the month, and it can lose the shine it once had.

Another risk you will be taking is that your dream career does not have a promising job outlook . Sure, if your passion lies in IT or business , it is likely that you will be getting a steady salary out of something you enjoy doing. However, more times than not, people have passions that either don’t pay well or the industry is too big to penetrate, which can be problematic and discourage them from pursuing it.

3. Passions can change

Although this is not always the case, for many people, passions change over time, especially if they have roots in their early years. It’s by no means a bad thing, but it can intervene in your life if you have chosen to pursue your passion as a career.

Because we are continually developing and learning new skills , it can be hard to say if your fascination with a certain field may fade over time, but to some, that’s just a risk worth taking.

Benefits of Choosing a Career with a High Salary

high-paying-career-advantages

For some people, doing what they love and earning enough money for a normal life don’t go hand in hand. For others, it’s a matter of either not having a passion or growing out of a dream they once had. Consequently, these reasons make a high-paying career a valuable option. It is understood that without a steady income, it’s unlikely that passion will be the thing you want to follow.

Of course, following one’s dreams has the emotional rewards that a job that pays your bills is unlikely to offer, but if you aren’t able to afford rent or pay off your student debt, maybe it’s time to postpone your passion and focus on solutions. We’ve all heard that money can’t buy happiness, but is that phrase completely true?

There are many things money can’t buy, but sometimes having it can make many of our problems go away, which is why there’s a list of benefits to choosing a job that provides us with a high salary.

1. The obvious one: money

This is a prominent perk of choosing to seek a job that will pay you well. A study shows that money can be associated with happiness, but not in the way you’d think. The study shows that people making under $75,000 a year tend to have lower happiness levels.

However, past that point, money doesn’t seem to have an effect on the human brain. Furthermore, having a steady income influences our mental and physical health. It is undoubtedly more comfortable knowing that you don’t have to worry about the price of something you like and how you will make ends meet from month to month.

People tend to respect those who are well off. Although it’s considered as an artificial way of gaining respect by some, most of the time, it works. Generally, a high income is associated with success, and we tend to respect successful people. In addition, there is a correlation between “important work” and high salaries, which leads us to think that only a high-paid job is respectable.

There is safety with high income, no doubt. You won’t have to worry about many things that take money to acquire. Plus, a high-earning career is oftentimes placed in a big industry that isn’t going anywhere, so you can find employment opportunities just about anywhere.

Keeping your work away from monetary vulnerability is vital, especially when you have a family to take into consideration or other matters of importance to you.

Disadvantages of Doing Work That Pays Well, But You Don’t Like

As good as money and safety sound, there is a downside to pursuing a career in a field you simply have no connection with. For starters, it will never feel as if you are close to living your dream unless, of course, that dream consists of a high-paying job that you don’t exactly like.

It’s hard to enjoy working in a place that doesn’t seem to motivate you to do the job well, and even when the working hours aren’t long, they are likely to seem so. When you’re stuck performing tasks you see no point in, you may lose focus on working on your skills and may feel lost in the job.

Most well-paying jobs can cast a lot of pressure, especially when it isn’t something you feel excited about, and that can have an impact on your view of life.

1. Long working hours

Jobs that offer a high payday often tend to go hand-in-hand with long working hours. Even when they don’t, to see that large number at the end of the month, you will probably have to put in a few extra hours, and that can be tiring.

This is not always the case, but when it is, it can leave you little to no time to do anything else apart from work. A survey has found that executives and managers with smartphones—who are all well compensated—tend to spend 13.5 hours a workday interacting with work.

2. Pressure

Usually, in the world of big money, there is a lot of competition and a lot of things changing rapidly. You have to constantly chase the next big thing and keep fighting for your position within the organization. However, this is not the case with every job, and maybe yours doesn’t really come with this downside. But for those it does, the pressure can oftentimes be overwhelming.

3. Not focusing on skills

Money-focused jobs are mostly concentrated on making the best out of the skills you already possess. Meanwhile, with a job you start out with because of your love for it, you will probably take time in developing and nurturing skills, like critical thinking , that can guarantee long-term success. Nevertheless, there are jobs out there that guarantee a good salary as well as skill training programs.

How to Decide Between a Job for Money vs. Passion

Choosing between money vs. passion is an ancient dilemma that troubles the minds of many people all over the world to this day. The stakes are pretty high as only a handful of people are fortunate enough to find a job that pays well and fulfills them. This is backed by research, too; According to a survey by Harris Interactive , only 20 percent of people across America feel passionate about their jobs.

On the other hand, Pew Research Center found that about half (49%) of American employees are very satisfied with their job.

So, should you try and settle for a promising career without much passion, or should you risk it for a job that you love and fulfills you? Well, there is no simple yes or no answer to this question, and there are many important factors to consider before deciding between a job for money vs. passion. We will try to help you with this critical decision, so keep reading to learn how to choose between a job you love and career growth.

Making Money Vs. Doing What You Love: Things To Consider When Choosing

things-to-consider-when-making-a-decision

Both of the options have a yin and yang, and sometimes deciding between the two can seem like mission impossible. But, that shouldn’t be the case, and it won’t be if you study your options closely and decide based on facts and feelings equally.

At the end of the day, isn’t your fulfillment and ability to say that you’re happy with your choices the most important thing?

However, it’s not that simple; there are many things to take into consideration when making such a big decision for the path in which you want your life to follow. You have to look at all sides carefully and then decide how and what you should be doing and do it.

Download Our Free Guide to Pursuing a Career With High Earnings

Land a job with high-earning potential and advance in it.

1. Earning potential

Before diving into a field of interest, you should consider the earning potential it offers. There is a chance that your passion has great pay on the menu as well. Yet, the time when you should consider putting your passion aside—not forgetting it—is when you know you won’t be able to afford it.

If it keeps you from life’s necessities, then you can always opt for treating it as a hobby, giving it your free time of the day, and making money in another field.

2. What you want from life

This is honestly the most crucial element in your decision-making process. Maybe you want to turn your passion into a job you love, but there is a chance that you want to keep far away from responsibilities and only enjoy it in your leisure time.

Neither of these is incorrect; it’s merely a point of view. Clearly, none of us are absolutely sure in what we want from our lives in every aspect of it, but having a slight idea might help you come to a conclusion with this dilemma.

3. Sometimes, you can do both

Doing both does not have one final meaning. It could be that your dream job just so happens to be a career that makes you more than enough money, or you follow passion at the same time as following a different work pathway.

Maybe you get lucky and make money off of a passion that you thought would take you nowhere, or you happen to fall in love with a job that you didn’t feel strongly towards at first; the possibilities are endless.

The Bottom Line: Choose a Job You Love or One That Pays?

Choosing between a beloved field or the one that will pay your bills can sometimes send you into a spiral of thoughts that is hard to get out of. However, it is a significant decision that will follow you for the most part of your life. When making this judgment, you should look into all the advantages and disadvantages that come with either one of the possibilities.

From money and stability to happiness and fulfillment, these all play a role in this puzzle. But, most importantly, remember to listen to the logic and your heart simultaneously because they generally come up with the best verdict together.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Is it better to love your job or make more money.

The answer to this question definitely depends on your priorities and values. Some prioritize job satisfaction and fulfillment over a higher salary, while others prioritize financial stability and security. Ultimately, the answer will vary from person to person.

Is salary more important than passion?

There is no universal answer to whether salary is more important than passion. Your decision should be based on your individual circumstances, values, and goals. It’s important to strike a balance that aligns with your overall well-being and allows you to lead a fulfilling life.

Should I follow my career or passion?

It’s possible to find fulfillment and success by aligning your career with your passion, but it may require some creativity, perseverance, and adaptability. The key is to make a decision that aligns with your values, goals, and circumstances and that ultimately brings you satisfaction and happiness in the long run.

Where should I live? I spent 3 years searching for the 'perfect city'

collage of remote worker

It was the end of another summer, and I was exactly where I’d been three years before. I’d spent those years searching for our next home, sifting the pros and cons of some 40 cities in the process while real estate prices around the country skyrocketed. I was out of ideas. What once seemed like a blessing — being able to choose where I wanted to live — now felt like a burden. And yet I couldn’t give up.

Like plenty of adults, where I lived was always tied to where I worked. Our first apartment after college was in the city where my husband happened to land a job. The next city? Another job. Those were the rules.

Then we both started working remote five years ago, and the rules changed. It was like the world opened up. For the first time, we could live wherever we wanted (at least, in the U.S. since we both work for U.S. employers). Any city, ours for the choosing … but which one?

And so began a multi-year search for where to live — an agonizing, arduous yet blithely optimistic quest for not just any city, but the perfect city.

I can’t be the only person obsessed with this. Searches for “ best city in the U.S. ” have tripled in the past five years, correlating with the rise in people working from home . Then there’s the bevy of annual “top places to live” lists that roam the internet. Livability , Money , Niche and Rocket Homes each recommend the best cities to settle down in, all with comforting data-backed analyses that I didn’t look too deep into, opting instead for browsing the listicles with their dazzling array of choices. Covington, Kentucky. Boulder, Colorado. Madison, Wisconsin. There are even curated lists for families (ask Fortune ) and young professionals ( Forbes has the scoop). I scoured them all with type A enthusiasm, certain the answer to my geographic dilemma was behind the next click.

After all, I didn’t want much. Just affordability, diversity, good weather, low crime, plenty of parks and bike trails, a strong job market, cultural opportunities and easy access to other cities and countries. Totally reasonable.

But for three years, I couldn’t find anything better than where I was. At the time we were based in Tampa, a metro area that pops up all over those “best city” lists. When people asked me why I wanted to move, I struggled to put it into words. But I felt it every time I looked out my living room window at those shadeless palm trees — like living in a postcard of last year’s summer vacation.

I can easily tell you all the reasons Tampa is an amazing place to live. It has a vibrant food and arts scene, no snow, no state income tax, and Disney World and award-winning beaches practically in your backyard. It should have been perfect, but it was never home. Like when you’re dating someone who’s smart and funny and nice and everything but, somehow, not for you.

Each year, I said this would be the year we moved. Each year, I renewed our lease, doubling down on my hunt for perfection. I looked at cities in Washington with great hiking nearby, but they were out of budget. I considered various cities in Indiana and Ohio for their low cost of living but ultimately discarded the entire Midwest (my apologies to all Midwesterners) as too remote for our tastes. We drove up to Tennessee (twice) and Georgia, flew to Oklahoma City, and visited every major city in Florida with a population over 100,000. Nothing fit. I briefly contemplated getting a life coach to talk us through it until the $6,000 price tag quoted on a Zoom call nearly knocked me off my kitchen table chair.

Then, on a whim last November, we took a weekend trip to Raleigh, North Carolina. I had decided to write a story on things to see and do in town. Fall color was at its peak — reds and golds I seldom saw, brightening the parks and greenways. We explored, ate locally sourced food and went for walks in the faint autumn crispness, just brisk enough to flirt with the idea of a sweater. Somehow, I knew I’d found it. Home. We moved to Raleigh this spring.

Cheryl Rodewig.

And we love it. Raleigh is the Goldilocks of American cities, a term I heard from one local that sums it up to a tee. Not too big or too small. Not too hot or cold. In between the mountains and the ocean. Progressive and diverse, yet surrounded by small towns and farmland. Of course, the city isn’t without downsides: soaring summer humidity, higher taxes than Florida, and honestly, I’d prefer those mountain waterfalls a couple hours closer. But all things taken together, like in the fairy tale, it’s just right.

I’d like to say it was careful analysis that got us here. Sure, I checked the stats: home prices, average temps, crime rate and the number of international destinations with direct flights from the Raleigh-Durham airport (nine, if you’re curious). And it’s true Raleigh comes in sixth in the recently released Best Places to Live list from U.S. News & World Report — third last year when I was still searching.

But it’s not about that. What I was looking for wasn’t ever going to rank in a spreadsheet. It’s more elusive yet, paradoxically, more tangible. It’s the summer sunflower fields and the university that makes its own ice cream and the grazing horses I pass on my drive in, even though we’re only 15 minutes from downtown. It’s leaving behind those relentless palm trees, trading up for the sprawling shady oaks that give the capital its understated nickname, City of Oaks.

Perhaps it’s not perfect. But it’s perfect for us, for right now, and that’s enough.
