Important PDF to speech converter limitations

At the moment, Narakeet can only read PDF documents out loud if they have text embedded into the document, and not just vectors for printing. PDF creation apps can turn the document into vector shapes and optimize it for printing, without keeping the embedded text. Documents like that require optical character recognition (OCR) for reading - effectively scanning images back into text. Although we plan to support reading pdf out loud using OCR in the future, this is not directly possible with Narakeet.

To read out loud PDF using Narakeet, make sure it still contains text, and not just vector shapes.

If you would like to be notified when it becomes possible to use text to speech for PDF documents containing only vector shapes (with OCR), get in touch with [email protected] .

Background Research on the possible influence of lateralised basal ganglia dysfunction on speech in Parkinson’s disease is scarce. This study aimed to compare speech in de-novo, drug-naive patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) with asymmetric nigral dopaminergic dysfunction, predominantly in either the right or left hemisphere.

Methods Acoustic analyses of reading passages were performed. Asymmetry of nigral dysfunction was defined using dopamine transporter-single-photon emission CT (DAT-SPECT).

Results From a total of 135 de novo patients with PD assessed, 47 patients had a lower right and 36 lower left DAT availability in putamen based on DAT-SPECT. Patients with PD with lower left DAT availability had higher dysarthria severity via composite dysarthria index compared with patients with lower right DAT availability (p=0.01).

Conclusion Our data support the crucial role of DAT availability in the left putamen in speech. This finding might provide important clues for managing speech following deep brain stimulation.

Title: improving robustness of diffusion-based zero-shot speech synthesis via stable formant generation.

Abstract: Diffusion models have achieved remarkable success in text-to-speech (TTS), even in zero-shot scenarios. Recent efforts aim to address the trade-off between inference speed and sound quality, often considered the primary drawback of diffusion models. However, we find a critical mispronunciation issue is being overlooked. Our preliminary study reveals the unstable pronunciation resulting from the diffusion process. Based on this observation, we introduce StableForm-TTS, a novel zero-shot speech synthesis framework designed to produce robust pronunciation while maintaining the advantages of diffusion modeling. By pioneering the adoption of source-filter theory in diffusion TTS, we propose an elaborate architecture for stable formant generation. Experimental results on unseen speakers show that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art method in terms of pronunciation accuracy and naturalness, with comparable speaker similarity. Moreover, our model demonstrates effective scalability as both data and model sizes increase.
