I know it’s a pain in the butt, but customizing your AI resume  for each job you apply to dramatically increases your chances of getting an interview.

This is because companies use something called an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to filter resumes for certain criteria automatically.

This means that before a human ever looks at your resume, a computer scans it first. To get past this automated filter, you need to include certain keywords mentioned in the job description of the role for which you’re applying.

How to customize your account manager resume for each application

  • Example: The role describes that they’re looking for experience managing accounts for enterprise software. If you have any experience in B2B, you should explicitly mention “enterprise account management” in the relevant work experience section.
  • The ATS filter focuses primarily on keywords. So, for example, if they’re looking for someone with Salesforce experience, you should have that on your resume spelled the same way they have it in the job description.

Notice how this work experience incorporates keywords mentioned in the job description in the exact format used in the job description. For example, the job mentions up-sells, so the resume mentions “up-sells” instead of “upsells.”

The ATS is filtering by specific keywords, so match exactly what is mentioned in the job description the way it is spelled and capitalized.

Follow these high-level  formatting tips  for your account manager resume:

  • Keep it to one page.
  • Focus on your hard skills in your “skills” section mentioned in the job description.
  • Only include a resume objective or summary if it adds new information to your resume.

In this same vein,  only include a resume objective if it will add new information to your resume . Simply put, most people don’t need to have a  resume objective  or summary.

Why? Most of the time, these are generic statements like “an experienced customer-first account manager looking to leverage my skill set to further my account manager career.”

This is generic and bland, so a hiring manager will gloss over it. Real estate is valuable since you have to fit your resume on one page. Only include a resume objective if you have a specific interest in the company or role to which you’re applying.

A resume summary is a high-level summary of your career accomplishments. Include this if you have at least five-plus years of experience and you have demonstrable, quantitative accomplishments you can list.

For example, a good bullet point for your resume summary is “across my career, beat yearly revenue targets by an average of 24%.” This can’t easily be learned if you leave it out, yet it conveys a clear, measurable impact.

Before you start applying for a new account manager position, you need to understand the playing field. Here are tips, hacks and data to give you a few giant steps toward your next great job. Account management is all about people-pleasing. That means you already have the instincts to understand what recruiters want. But how do you get your resume into their hands? It’s not usually the first section of your resume, but consider putting it near the top if you have an amazing array to display.

This is a great place to start your thinking process because you will need to highlight all your skills , accomplishments and attributes in your account manager resume. Your accomplishments and professional growth are the backbone of an amazing account manager resume. To make the most of the employment history section, here are three aspects to consider:

  • Accomplishments

Let go of lists of responsibilities and instead tell recruiters what you have achieved in your experience . Show a pattern of growth in skills and achievements from the beginning of your career to where you are now. Here is a great place for more of those strong action verbs. Consider using some of the following examples: championed, initiated, launched, negotiated or spearheaded. These all evoke images of an account manager who is a go-getter.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics classifies account managers as a type of sales manager and expects those jobs to increase by 7% from 2020 through 2030, which is about average for all occupations. However, LinkedIn’s emerging jobs of 2020 lists customer success specialists and predicts an annual growth rate of 34%. Among the skills necessary for that job is account management. 

When describing your accomplishments, be specific. Don’t simply say, “Increased client satisfaction.” Use data or tell exactly what action you took to increase client satisfaction. Account manager resume education example: Think beyond your diploma

Your degree is one of your baseline achievements and recruiters are looking for it, so don’t leave this out to save space. Many account managers have bachelor’s degrees in business administration and have studied accounting, advertising, communications, finance, management or marketing. That does not mean you cannot be an account manager if you haven’t studied those subjects. The further into your career you are, the less your college experience matters. 

However, it’s still a traditionally expected part of your resume. Moreover, some ATS systems will search for it in your document and education also matters more if you’re in the starting stages of your career.

If you are looking for your first job out of college, you should move this section up higher than your employment history section, and you might consider renaming this section “experience.” Then you can also list internships, related college classwork and anything else you have done that illustrates skills needed for account management.

List your undergraduate (bachelor’s) degree and any graduate degree you might have. You can add your high school if you don’t have a postsecondary degree or if your resume is looking thin. Consider adding certifications in any relevant areas or any business classes you have taken.

What's wrong with this example? While this example starts strong with the “successful” adjective, it fails to give context around that adjective. The skills listed are a bit too vague, and the second sentence is more of an objective statement rather than a professional summary.

Why is this better? In this example, the “successful” adjective is given greater context through the inclusion of an award, as well as an exact number of years of experience. Rather than plainly listing skills, the skills of communication and customer service are highlighted by stating they worked “directly with corporate clients”.
