Department of chemistry and chemical biology.
The preparation of a satisfactory dissertation normally requires at least four years of full-time research. All students are expected to provide a public presentation of their Ph.D. research as part of their program requirements. The final manuscript must conform to the requirements described in Dissertations . The dissertation defense includes:
Students must submit the dissertation to the Ph.D. Thesis Committee at least 7 days before the defense date. The final manuscript must conform to the requirements described online on the GSAS website here .
Once the date, time, and location of the dissertation defense has been scheduled by the student with the Committee Members, the student must notify Kathy Oakley in the Department Office, who will send an email announcement to CCB faculty, graduate students, and postdocs inviting them to the public presentation. The CCB Doctoral Dissertation Form must be submitted 1-2 weeks prior to the defense to Kathy Oakley in the Department office, M-132. Please note that the doctoral dissertation form also has a new section on scheduling an exit interview with Dr. Josh Cox before or after your defense. The purpose of the exit interview is for you to tell Josh what has and has not worked for you during your time in CCB. Please contact Josh with any questions about the exit interview, and contact Kathy with questions about the dissertation form.
All PhD candidates are required to submit a copy of the dissertation via the ETDs @ Harvard submission tool by the deadline established for each degree conferral date. (See the GSAS Degree Calendar page for more information on deadlines.) Dissertations must be submitted electronically to ETDs following their guidelines, including the requirement of embedded fonts. Note that GSAS rules supersede those of ETDs for format.
For international students on an F-1 visa, the F-1 visa will end on the program completion date. The program completion date is not necessarily the defense date. It is the date the student stops working in the lab, and any salary/stipend would be ended on that date. International graduate students on an F-1 visa may continue working in the lab as students after their defense until the dissertation submission deadline, if the PI agrees to pay them and they are still completing graduate research in their lab. International students should wait until the week of their program completion date before submitting their dissertation, while being careful to meet all GSAS deadlines. U.S. citizens may continue working in in the lab as students after their defense until the end of the term, if the PI agrees to pay them and they are still completing graduate research in their lab.
If necessary, students may request to delay the release of (“embargo”) their work when submitting their dissertation to ETDs @ Harvard . Embargo requests greater than two years must be approved by the Department. For embargoes over two years, students must first get the approval of their advisor. Written approval from their advisor and a strong written academic reason for the embargo must be forwarded to the Co-Director of Graduate Studies, Joe Lavin , for departmental approval. Students should not begin the process until they have permission of their advisor.

Environmental contamination is in the news more than ever. Shira Joudan introduces key concepts to talk about what happens to chemicals in the environment and what chemists should consider in their day-to-day lives, both at work and at home.
Excited by the prospect of future missions to the Jupiter system, Bruce Gibb explores the chemistry of Jupiter’s moons and wonders whether there could be life on Europa.
Becoming an assistant professor brings with it several challenges, one of which is developing new relationships that can be professionally and personally beneficial. Shira Joudan reflects on getting to know people at a new institution, having different types of relationships, and how they help with happiness and success.
As the search for new faculty begins across many chemistry departments, Bruce Gibb takes the opportunity to assess his potential biases — and discusses how to address them.
Given the fraught history of fluorine, Michelle Francl wonders what made medicinal chemists consider fluorine derivatives?
Becoming an assistant professor brings with it numerous challenges, one of which is teaching undergraduate courses for the first time. Shira Joudan reflects on the ups and downs of setting up and delivering her first course.
In the third of a trilogy of essays on types of intelligence, Bruce Gibb mines the thoughts of some of his peers on what personal qualities help chemists achieve success in the lab.
Teaching the history of science along with the science itself can give students greater context about the topic they are learning and a wider perspective on how it has developed. Michelle Francl, who has wrestled with how much time to spend on teaching history in the chemistry classroom for years, considers how unconventional histories can shift the curriculum.
There are lots of expectations for assistant professors, and many opportunities that are good for your career. Shira Joudan reflects on making a personalized reference document for how to decide which opportunities are best to pursue, and to which to say ‘no’.
Different roles require different types of intelligences, and trainee chemists are often tested on their linguistic and logical–mathematical intelligences at the expense of other types. Bruce Gibb describes the types of intelligences that chemists use, and suggests ways to teach and test them.
Large language models such as ChatGPT have been predicted to lighten the load for some workers but make some roles obsolete. Michelle Francl explores what they can do for chemistry professors.
Getting started at a new institution and building a research programme can be an exciting period, but there is much to do in a short space of time. Shira Joudan reflects on her first month as an assistant professor, discussing the stresses of setting up a new lab and how it’s easier with a little help from your (new) friends.
Bifurcating the population as either verbal or visual thinkers is one of the simplest ways to classify intelligence. Bruce Gibb argues that visual thinking is key to chemistry, and that teaching and testing must focus on this type of thinking rather than traditional approaches promoting verbal thinking skills.
The time between accepting a position as an assistant professor and taking the role is exciting and unique. But how much work is required before you even start? Shira Joudan ponders which tasks are necessary and how many times one should interrupt a very well-deserved break.
Winter brings a spike in mortality rates, but rather than simply having more parties to divert our attention, Bruce Gibb suggests that perhaps we should be looking to the misunderstood mushroom to give us a boost.
Introduced in response to growing numbers of scientists and conferences, posters gave an outlet to those not invited to give oral presentations. But why are poster sessions still the purview of students?
Sit back and settle in for a tour of the chemical analysis instruments aboard the James Webb Space Telescope and the techniques being used to explore the planets beyond our Solar System.
Decisions, decisions. There’s a lot to think about when moving on from a postdoctoral position and Shira Joudan takes us through the considerations that led to her ultimately taking a tenure-track position in a new city.
Bruce Gibb suggests that chemists can play a central role in democratizing access to energy by focusing on common elements.
Michelle Francl explores how glass revolutionized chemistry.
Understanding the preparative chemistry of atomically dispersed nickel catalysts for achieving high-efficiency h 2 o 2 electrosynthesis.
Electrochemical hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production via two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e − ORR) has received increasing attention as it enables clean, sustainable, and on-site H 2 O 2 production. Mimicking the active site structure of H 2 O 2 production enzymes, such as nickel superoxide dismutase, is the most intuitive way to design efficient 2e − ORR electrocatalysts. However, Ni-based catalysts have thus far shown relatively low 2e − ORR activity. In this work, we present the design of high-performing, atomically dispersed Ni-based catalysts (Ni ADCs) for H 2 O 2 production through understanding the formation chemistry of the Ni-based active sites. The use of a precoordinated precursor and pyrolysis within a confined nanospace were found to be essential for generating active Ni–N x sites in high density and increasing carbon yields, respectively. A series of model catalysts prepared from coordinating solvents having different vapor pressures gave rise to Ni ADCs with controlled ratios of Ni–N x sites and Ni nanoparticles, which revealed that the Ni–N x sites had greater 2e − ORR activity. Another set of Ni ADCs identified the important role of the degree of distortion from the square planar structure in H 2 O 2 electrosynthesis activity. The optimized catalyst exhibited a record H 2 O 2 electrosynthesis mass activity with excellent H 2 O 2 selectivity.

His committee also included Professors Akbar Salam and Elham Gadhiri in Chemistry and Stephen Winters in Physics. From the beginning of his graduate career, Dominique contributed to various projects in the Geyer laboratory through computer analysis and simulation, gradually increasing the sophistication of the computations. His most recent modeling work, some of which was presented to the Electrochemical Society shown in the picture, used newly available computational formalisms and codes which incorporate the effects of solvation and voltage at each step of the catalytic process. The manuscript “On the Mechanism of Butanol Formation from the Electrochemical Reduction of CO 2 on Phosphorus-Rich CuP 2 without *CO Dimerization: A Computational Study” was submitted to the Journal of Physical Chemistry C for consideration for publication. Based on an experimental report in the recent published literature, Dominique’s simulations provide insight into the detailed mechanisms of this complex multi-step process. Dominique is looking forward to continuing his research and to teaching and mentoring students in chemistry at Winthrop University.
Annual chemistry and biochemistry department poster fair recognizes student achievements.
The UA Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry hosted its annual poster fair Monday. The fair provided opportunities for seniors in both the chemistry and biochemistry majors to present their senior capstone and thesis research projects.
Non-major students who have been working in chemistry and biochemistry labs were also encouraged to present.
The poster fair allowed the department to showcase its many diverse research opportunities that are available for undergraduates at UA, as well as answer any questions undergraduates had about the fields of chemistry and biochemistry.
This event has been occurring for more than 10 years and offers an opportunity for students to get experience in presenting their research in a professional setting before graduating.
“This event combines students in CBC that are completing their senior research thesis, which is required for a biochemistry B.S. and honor students in chemistry,” said Olivia Mendoza, senior program coordinator and adviser for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. “This is a chance to bring the UA community [members] that are interested in science research to see what CBC students are doing their research on.”
Research topics ranged from honeybees and mosquito wingspans to spectroscopy and litium-sulfur batteries, from biomedical implants and activity in ant brains to pancreatic and lung cancer and bone degradation.
The poster fair not only showed that current students have undertaken and completed impressive research projects, but it also demonstrated the students have become competent, innovative and creative young scientists who have tackled an impressive task successfully.
As an additional way to recognize students on their exceptional research, the chemistry and biochemistry department offered a number of prizes in different categories to account for the many diverse projects being presented.
Prizes were awarded for emerging research, accomplished research—which is research conducted for more than two semesters—and senior thesis research. Additionally, all of those categories were divided into physical or life sciences. First and second place winners were awarded a monetary prize.
Faculty members from the chemistry and biochemistry departments, as well as graduate students from the department judged the research projects.

Dates : Part I in the summer semester, Part II in the winter semester. Final examination: comprehensive written examination after part II Credit points: 6 CP
Competence goals: Students learn about and apply strategies and procedures with which they can design chemistry-related learning processes in their later professional life. This includes the ability to apply different teaching concepts in the design of chemistry lessons, to use different media sensibly in lessons and to take heterogeneous learning groups into account when planning lessons. In addition, students recognize the importance of topics such as education for sustainable development (ESD), experimental approaches and internal differentiation in chemistry lessons and the significance of the structure of curricular requirements throughout the school years.
Module content: In the first half of the course, various strategies and methods are presented that can be helpful for learning and understanding chemistry. These include the structuring of subject content using basic concepts, the use of various media and methods as well as the targeted use of experiments, models and model concepts and student ideas. In the second half, basic procedures and methods of designing teaching-learning situations for chemical content in and out of school are presented (e.g. chemistry in context, interdisciplinary learning, the research-developing teaching method) and implemented using students' own considerations and presentations. Approaches from general and subject-didactic learning and motivation research provide the theoretical background for this.
Dates : every semester. Prerequisites for participation: Successful completion of a module in the chosen field. Final examination: Submission of the Bachelor's thesis. Credit points: 15 CP
Information on writing the Bachelor's thesis and finding a topic is listed in detail here
Competence objectives: Students choose a topic for their Bachelor's thesis in consultation with a supervisor. The accompanying course serves to support students in acquiring general and topic-related skills (e.g. structure and organization of a research paper, literature research in specific databases, formulation of research questions and application of suitable methods, data collection and evaluation)
Module content: Students are introduced to the basic questions and methodological working methods of the chosen field and gain an insight into the structures of written qualification papers in the respective subject area. In addition to joint seminar content (e.g. research in specific databases), this module includes around ten individual consultations, participation in selected working group seminars and the preparation of the Bachelor's thesis
Dates : Every semester. Final examination: Active participation in the seminar, max. seven graded protocols in the practical course Credit points : 6 CP
Competence objectives: Students become familiar with a variety of experiments in different fundamental subject areas of school chemistry and are able to plan, implement and optimize them. Writing experimental protocols enables students to decide which subject content is necessary for understanding the experiments and to critically reflect on the experiments. As part of the internship, students also learn how to use digitalization in the field of experimental work, which is didactically processed in the associated seminar with regard to individual support and differentiation. For their own later lesson planning, they practise developing experimental and conceptual lesson proposals and reflecting on them in terms of subject-specific didactic issues
Module content: In the practical course and in the didactic seminar, the important subject areas of secondary levels I and II are explored; these include methods for separating and detecting substances, the introduction of chemical reactions, the experimental exploration of the structure of matter, introduction to organic chemistry, thermodynamics, electrochemistry and kinetics. In the didactic seminar, the experiments are reflected upon from a didactic perspective. Various didactic issues will be taken up for discussion and related to the respective topic (e.g. topic-related student ideas, interests or learning difficulties).
Dates : Every summer semester. Final examination: Preparation and presentation of an experimental lecture on a given topic (45 min, ungraded), written elaboration of the experimental lecture (graded). Credit points : 3 CP
Competence objectives: In this seminar, students demonstrate that they can independently explore an interdisciplinary topic in chemistry teaching and reflect on it from a didactic perspective, taking into account the literature on chemistry didactics.
Module content: Students prepare an experimental presentation for their topic. Based on the subject-specific clarification, students identify important thematic content and select well-founded experiments, which they then present in the lecture together with a subject-specific introduction. In addition, they develop ideas for possible implementations in chemistry lessons.
The specialization module Chemistry Didactics (che752) consists of two courses. The seminar Concepts of Chemistry is compulsory .
Dates : Every winter semester. Final examination: 1 oral examination (approx. 30 min.) or 1 term paper (max. 10 pages) or 1 written examination (max. 120 min.) Credit points : 3 CP
Competence objectives: In this module, students combine subject-specific and subject-didactic skills by linking the subject-specific aspects of the basic concepts of chemistry with the arrangement of teaching content and mapping them in spiral curricula. In addition, they acquire skills in areas of chemistry teaching that incorporate interdisciplinary skills in particular. These skills also include the consideration of heterogeneous learning groups and differentiating tasks
Module content: As part of the seminar, the most important topics of chemistry lessons (including the structure of matter, selected material chemistry, electrochemistry, kinetics, thermodynamics, metals, acids/bases) are linked to the basic concepts and considered in a spiral curriculum. Particular attention is paid to the development of pupils' skills.
