Research Funding

  • Researcher Development Schemes
  • Melbourne Postdoctoral Fellowships
  • Melbourne Postdoctoral Fellowships (record of scheme)

The Melbourne Postdoctoral Fellowships scheme was introduced in 2021 as a supportive initiative for early career researchers during the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the subsequent three years, the University annually awarded ten highly competitive fellowships to outstanding University of Melbourne postdoctoral researchers (who had graduated with a PhD from the University of Melbourne) and academic staff. The 2024 awarded cohort will be the last annual intake under this scheme. For 2025 commencements, interested applicants for fellowships should refer to the expanded McKenzie Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme .

Though the University is no longer awarding new fellowships through the Melbourne Postdoctoral Fellowships scheme, it continues to provides career development and concentrated research opportunities for its distinguished fellows, who contribute vitally to the excellence of our research community. Current Melbourne Postdoctoral Fellows, including those commencing their fellowship in 2024, retain their full Melbourne Postdoctoral Fellowship and relevant institutional/faculty supports until their completion.

The objectives of the 2024 Melbourne Postdoctoral Fellowships scheme were to:

  • attract and retain talented recent doctoral graduates from the University of Melbourne in areas that are a research priority for the University;
  • retain researchers who have the potential to build and lead interdisciplinary collaborative research activities inside and across Faculties; and
  • promote research that aligns with institutional research strategies and research priorities in Faculties.

Jointly funded by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) (DVCR) strategic funding and Faculties, each Fellowship is awarded at Academic Level A6 in the University Salary Band plus oncosts and superannuation as per the terms and conditions of employment for University staff set out in the applicable University of Melbourne enterprise agreement. Salary funding for the Melbourne Postdoctoral Fellowship is split 2:1 (DVCR: Faculty). DVCR strategic funds also provide an additional single allocation of $25,000 for the Fellow's research project costs over the full term of the Fellowship. The default term of the Melbourne Postdoctoral Fellowships is for three years (at 1.0 FTE) of research-focused activity.

Eligibility

Melbourne Postdoctoral Fellowships were open to early career researchers who were awarded their PhD in the previous three years before their fellowship application, unless demonstrated interruptions or exceptional circumstances occurred. Applicants must have met the requirements to graduate with a PhD from the University of Melbourne; or, if academic staff at the University, may have graduated with a PhD from another university. Melbourne Postdoctoral Fellows were eligible to one fellowship under this scheme, and were not eligible for award if they had already been awarded a competitively funded research fellowship from any institution since the award of their PhD.

Our vision is of a resilient, just, and sustainable finance system that works for communities and the planet

SFH will use its independence and expertise to support policymakers and finance leaders to lift the ambition, coverage and equity of the sustainable finance transition.

Welcome to the Sustainable Finance Hub (SFH) at Melbourne Climate Futures (MCF), a multidisciplinary initiative at the University of Melbourne. We are a team of researchers and practitioners who are passionate about advancing sustainable finance in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Sustainable finance is the practice of integrating environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into financial system decision-making. It aims to align the financial system with the goals of sustainable development and climate action, while also enhancing financial performance and resilience.

At SFH, we believe that sustainable finance can be a powerful driver of positive change for communities, governments and the economy. We conduct high-quality interdisciplinary research on sustainable finance and its impacts, develop tools and frameworks to support practitioners and policymakers, and engage and educate decision-makers to enable them to adopt science-informed approaches to sustainable financing.

We are eager to work with partners within and beyond the University.

What we do and how we do it will catalyse change in the sustainable finance system

Deepen understanding of distributional and systemic effects

PhD Program

  • Program of Study

Wharton’s PhD program in Finance provides students with a solid foundation in the theoretical and empirical tools of modern finance, drawing heavily on the discipline of economics.

The department prepares students for careers in research and teaching at the world’s leading academic institutions, focusing on Asset Pricing and Portfolio Management, Corporate Finance, International Finance, Financial Institutions and Macroeconomics.

Wharton’s Finance faculty, widely recognized as the finest in the world, has been at the forefront of several areas of research. For example, members of the faculty have led modern innovations in theories of portfolio choice and savings behavior, which have significantly impacted the asset pricing techniques used by researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. Another example is the contribution by faculty members to the analysis of financial institutions and markets, which is fundamental to our understanding of the trade-offs between economic systems and their implications for financial fragility and crises.

Faculty research, both empirical and theoretical, includes such areas as:

  • Structure of financial markets
  • Formation and behavior of financial asset prices
  • Banking and monetary systems
  • Corporate control and capital structure
  • Saving and capital formation
  • International financial markets

Candidates with undergraduate training in economics, mathematics, engineering, statistics, and other quantitative disciplines have an ideal background for doctoral studies in this field.

Effective 2023, The Wharton Finance PhD Program is now STEM certified.
