Sloww Book Summaries

Sloww Book Summaries: High Quality, Detailed, Nonfiction (& Free!)

About the book summaries.

What makes Sloww summaries the most useful book summaries in the world?

Author Quotes:  I always use the author’s original words— not filtered by my mind. Watch out for book “summaries” that are only or mostly in the reader’s words—you’re essentially playing the “telephone game” with these (you’re reading the reader’s mind, not the author’s words).

Key Themes:  I group similar quotes into key themes, so you get the gist of the main themes from a book  and  see direct examples of original author quotes that support the themes. Key themes can then be synthesized across books to make you more of a interdisciplinary generalist.

Visual Formatting:  I do a lot of extra work to provide intuitive visual organization. This is rarely seen in other book summaries online that are often long pages of unformatted text or bullet points. I use highlighting, bolding, visuals, and infographics to bring my book summaries to life.

Appropriate Length: There are far too many short summaries out there that only give you bits and pieces of a book. My summaries are “as long as they need to be” depending on the quality of the book. I offer both free summaries and 🔒Premium summaries (further distilled and more actionable). Here are some examples of how much fluff I cut out of a book to produce my summaries (free summaries cut ~90% out of a full book on average; 🔒Premium summaries then cut the free summaries in half):

6 ways to find book summaries for college students.

trying to find book summaries on laptop

We are all in need of accurate book summaries once in a while, especially when studying at college or hopping on a busy work schedule. There are so many reading lists and recommendations like “100 books everybody should read,” “ 10 Best Sci-Fi Books ,” or more college-specific “ 12 Books Every Law Student Should Read .” But how can one possibly devour and digest all this information, especially when it’s not just for fun but also relevant to your college studies and career? The answer is: find book summaries for college students.

There are multiple resources for various needs and are relevant for different purposes. Some of them are behind a paywall that is relatively high to climb… We’ve selected a few best resources that help you get the plot and the main ideas of the books you want or need to read—fiction, novels, productivity and self-help books, and scholarly works. We mention even obvious open-source websites, but there are many more fantastic services with summaries that do precisely what you need—summarize books and textbooks in a 10–15 minute read.

Of course, you also need a summary of this post. So here we go: don’t confuse review and summaries, don’t forget that summaries are rarely impartial, and use the resources listed below.

Why do You Need Book Summaries?

Summaries are not about cheating—they are helpful because they can save you time, help write college papers, and prevent you from making bad reading choices.

Get to Know Cultural References

Sometimes, the only thing you need from a book is a chance to understand references (and memes, of course) based on its plot. You might not care about Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s , and you don’t wanna watch the movie (which is quite different from an original novella). The only thing you need is to know what’s the craze about it, and a book summary will get you there.

Refresh the Plot in Your Head

You’ve read so many books in the past 10–15 years, and there is no way you can still remember the plot or character names. It is especially handy when reading ongoing book series like The Game of Thrones. We need to refresh “what happened in the previous book” while waiting for George Martin to get done with his new bestseller.

Write College Papers

More often than not, you have to rely on scholarly literature while writing your college essays and doing research projects. Here you’d usually need both academic literature and some self-help advice on how to overcome writer’s block , for example. Browsing through summaries of scientific works will help you find relevant studies to use for your college project.

Get Self-Help Advice, Quickly

The industry of self-help continues to bloom, and the amount of productivity books has quadrupled. Summaries will help you to decide which books have compelling ideas and are worth your time. You really don’t wanna spend hours reading another self-help book just to learn that its primary (and only) advice is “work hard” or something along these lines.

Decide What to Read Next

If you’re not afraid of spoilers, getting acquainted with a summary will help you decide whether you want to read a book or not. Whatever book you’ve set your mind on, BooksRun will help you to buy it cheaply .

Though don’t forget that summaries are no substitution for learning from textbooks and reading. To absorb and apply the knowledge, you need to do much more than just get the main idea in 10 minutes. Always think critically: stay alert that summaries are not unprejudiced. Some summaries can be simply inadequate or misleading, even on paid services.

Wikipedia and WikiSummaries: Best Free Websites for Fiction Book Summaries

Duh. But let’s state the obvious—Wikipedia is an excellent resource with great articles about classics and popular self-help books. And it won’t get annoying by try to sell you something every 5 minutes like some other websites. If you find the summary you need there, search no more. Additionally, WikiSummaries is a website dedicated to… you’ve guessed it right. They have a pretty awesome collection that is easy to navigate

Four Minutes Books

(free summaries of self-help, scholarly, and productivity books).

If you want to keep things short and cheap (actually, entirely free)—check Four Minutes Books . Their collection of books is just great, covering popular self-help books and also more academically-oriented studies. You can start with a quiz to define what kind of self-help you need—that’s quite fun!

Every book is unpacked in one or ten sentences that highlight three main points offered by the study. It is excellent for refreshing the books you’ve read and deciding whether you need this study for your college essay or not. To be fair, these are more reviews of reviews (curators do not pledge to have read each and every book), but these short summaries can give you a good idea of the book. It is a valuable resource that can totally save you when you need to browse through a significant number of books and references to choose a few that are worth your attention.

(Probably the best subscription app for self-help and productivity book summaries)

There are many beautiful things to say about Blinkist , but you won’t get this effective time-saving app for free. Although they give you a 7-day trial to check it out. The idea is pretty simple: a terrific amount of self-help books (especially those your friends and top-notch entrepreneurs are talking about) are summarized in around 15 minutes. You can listen to these summaries or read through them.

There are multiple alternatives like Get Abstract , Read It for Me , and Summaries . Still, Blinkist has a better selection, a user-friendly interface, and a flexible subscription plan.

CliffsNotes

(a sure way to find book summaries for students).

CliffNotes is an endless resource for pumping up your study routine. There are many literature notes (aka summaries) for all kinds of books, from Virgil’s Aeneid to Jean-Paul Sartre’s No Exit.

Literary Magazines

(an old-school way of getting to book summaries).

Multiple magazines cover all kinds of literary genres. Usually, their articles don’t offer a summary per se but a lengthy review that is exquisitely written. These articles give you a good sense of the book and its plot and, crucially, help you perceive it in a bigger literary and social context.

If you care only about the plot, choose Blinkist or free services. But if you want to be on top of all the literary trends and discussion, this old-school magazine subscription will turn out as a pleasant experience! Some apparent choices are The New Yorker and London Review of Books; you can choose something more niche that fits your interests.

A bonus tip: check your subscription options if you have an @edu email. There are some plans for students that allow you free access under a specific limit of articles per month.

Book Bloggers

(join a reading community).

There are quite a few “professional” readers around the globe who regularly publish reading notes and reviews with their reading community. Why don’t you follow somebody like that?

Let’s take James Clear, who is a popular lifestyle and productivity guru and an author himself. On his website, he provides summaries of the most essential self-help books (both in a short 3-sentence version and a more in-depth analysis)—and they’re pretty valuable! For non-fiction books, also consider book summaries by Sam Thomas Davies and Ali Abdaal .

Find a blogger who shares your literary preferences, be it history books , biography, or fashion , and you’ll find book summaries in plenty!

There is quite an amount of resources with book summaries for college assignments and for the fun of it. If you are using open-source and free platforms, consider contributing to them as well! Finally, just don’t forget to read actual books once in a while!

One of the notable features of this website is the “No Fear Shakespeare” section which presents the full text of Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets together with side-by-side, modern English translations.

Shakespearean works are already difficult to understand and you need a platform that breaks down the language for you to easily understand. It saves you a lot of headaches.

6. Book Summary Club

book summary websites for students

The name Book Summary Club alone already suggests that this is a book summary website. It focuses more on short summaries of the best nonfiction books in the market. You’ll get quick insights into all the key points of each book.

The website is specifically built for business owners who have little or no time to build a reading culture but still yearn to expand their horizons through books. There are more than 140 book summaries for them to explore.

I also noticed that the founder is a trained English teacher who was greatly inspired by the high-performing students who only read summaries before reading the complete book for a more comprehensive understanding.

However, a summary of each book usually leads back to websites like Blinkist and Readingraphics. This gives you multiple views on a single topic which is good because it helps you build a well-rounded understanding in less time.

Most of all the website is known for suggesting the next book for its users. This is based on your interests and preferences when you sign up.

The website is free to access.

7. Quick Book Summary

book summary websites for students

Quick Book Summary is built specially for book lovers to grasp the main ideas and concepts from books without reading them.

There are also non-fiction books across different fields from self-help, business, science fiction, and many more.

To ensure that you get an accurate and meaningful summary of each book, the website works with a team of book lovers and expert writers to read and capture the heart of the original book. In the end, there’s little difference between you and someone who read the full book.

Even as all the books on the platform are properly categorized, you can also use the search box to locate any book of your choice.

The website is free to access and if you’re part of their community, you’ll receive regular updates, book recommendations, and other exclusive content directly to your email.

As a student, there’s a lot to gain from this website. It’s a great educational supplement . You can get a free tutor and gain access to lots of test preparation materials.

I also noticed that the platform is actively adding more books to its collection every week. So, if your desired book isn’t available, you can always check back.

Readingraphics is an interesting website. It goes beyond the traditional book summary method and incorporates both audio and infographics. This means that you’ll have diverse content types to explore.

This website is best fitted for book lovers who digest information better through pictures. Now, imagine having your favorite books summarized in colorful, easy-to-digest graphics. Bliss.

You’ll remember every detail of the book much better than reading, listening to audiobooks, or watching summary videos.

Since Readingraphics incorporates different reading habits, you can customize yours. You can read the summaries online, listen to the audio version, print, or download them for better flexibility.

  • What Are Websites That Offer Books Summaries?

Summary websites are online platforms that give short and valuable summaries of different content.

These summaries can cover a wide range of topics, including:

  • news stories and more.

These websites aim to make it easier for users to understand important information quickly.

Summary websites usually find the original text’s main ideas, arguments, or themes. We typically achieve this by using both computer programs and human editors.

Summaries of books are helpful for people who want to understand a lot of information quickly. This includes students, researchers, professionals, and people who learn for fun.

  • Why I Like Websites that Summarize Books

Book summary sites, often perceived as a shortcut, serve many beneficial purposes. Some people call them spoiler websites.

They are not about cheating the literary experience but enhancing it in various ways.

I think these sites benefit those who wish to get the essence of a book before committing to the full read. In my experience, these act as a teaser that can inspire further reading.

For those who have already journeyed through a book, these summaries offer a quick way to refresh their memory.

  • Why Read Book Summaries

No matter which book summary websites and apps you choose, you may wonder if book summaries are worth reading. It can seem like it’s not the same as reading an entire book, and that’s correct.

However, there are a few advantages of consuming book summaries.

  • Choose Books to Read

If you like reading books, try reading the summary first to understand the story.

It might tell you more than the back cover. After checking the summary, you can decide to read the whole book.

Sometimes, the summary is enough, but if you’re interested in more details, go for the entire book.

  • Revisit Old Books

Try reading a summary if you’ve read a book and want to recall its key points.

This is useful for revisiting and applying essential concepts in life or work.

If you don’t own the book, subscribing to a summary service lets you quickly access many summaries and review multiple books.

  • Treat Them Like Articles

You can also read summaries independently without intending to read the entire book. Treat the summaries like articles or podcasts and listen to one or two per day.

A lot of summaries are short and easy to consume. Some services offer text versions for when you want to read like you would a news article.

However, you may also be able to listen to the summary like a podcast. Instead of scouring the news for articles to read, go to your book summary app.

That way, you’ll always have something new to read or listen to during your day.

Busy people who love reading can use book summary websites to keep up with new books.

These summaries are often as short as 10 minutes and can be listened to during commutes or spare moments.

This service is flexible, proper for months or years, and eliminates the need to read entire books.

  • Learn More Efficiently

A book summary can speed up your learning by cutting out unnecessary details in whole books.

If you often find books longer than needed, consider using summaries.

They capture all the key points, allowing you to grasp new concepts quickly.

For any missing information, check summaries of similar books.

You can also buy the whole book and use the summary as a guide to focus on relevant chapters.

  • Individuals Who Offer Free Book Summaries

Some of the best book summaries come from individual bloggers. Be sure to check out the following websites if you want some free summaries:

  • Alex J. Hughes
  • Derek Sivers
  • James Clear
  • Nat Eliason
  • Paul Minors

Now, these bloggers don’t have as many summaries as the platforms. However, you don’t have to pay to access the content.

If you don’t have a specific book in mind, you can follow these creators to see what books they cover in the future.

Book Summaries: The Best Book Summary Websites & Apps

“So many books, so little time.” — Frank Zappa

Ever since humans learned to read and write, everything changed.

We could pass on information and wisdom to the next generations and that’s the reason for our dramatic growth.

We all know the importance of books. Yet, not all of us can read books as often as we’d like to. Here are a few reasons for that:

So we either turn to book summaries or we don’t read at all.

When you read a book summary, you hear voices like:

Should You Read Book Summaries?

The short answer is yes.

In fact, they provide more value than you could ever get from the passive consumption of social media.

Instead of choosing between reading book summaries or reading books , why not do both?

I’ve read book summaries of so many books that I will never touch in my life and I still read the books I want to read.

I’ve already done the hard work for you and compiled a list of websites with free book summaries (especially nonfiction book summaries) along with the summarizer’s best or favorite book summary to start with.

The Best Websites To R ead Book Summaries (Free & Paid)

The 5 Best Book Summary Websites to Up-Level Your Brain

book summary websites for students

There’s a lot of reasons you might need a book summary. Maybe you don’t have the time to get through the books on your “want to read” list . Maybe you need to write some book notes for an article you’re working on. Maybe you just want to figure out if you want to read a full book.

Either way, it can be incredibly time-consuming to read through a whole book to find what you need, which is where book summary websites become a great option.

In this article, we’re going to dive into five different options. Most sites cover different types of books or have different uses, so you should be able to find the one you need.

This guide to the best book summary websites covers:

What are book summaries, getabstract.

Book summaries are pretty much exactly what they sound like — a summary of a book. Some summaries are incredibly in-depth and give you a ton of details. Others are shorter and give you main bullet points. Which one you pick will depend on what you need the summary for, but just know both are available.

If you’re a person who loves the nitty gritty details in some books, book summaries might not work for you. Most summaries skip over the stories that accompany most of the points the author is trying to make. However, if you love just being able to understand the main points and don’t mind losing some of the accompanying stories, these are exactly what you need.

Each book summary also depends on the person or company creating the summaries, as different people might find some parts more important than others.

Book Summary Websites - Blinkist

Blinkist is one of the more well-known book summary websites. It helps you get through books within fifteen minutes instead of the usual hours (or days) it takes to get through a book. Currently, there are over 5,000 books you have access to inside of Blinkist to learn. At the time of writing this, there is currently a free plan which only lets you access one summary per day, but depending on your schedule that might be a great option.

The main premise behind Blinkist is to use your blocks of time where you’re doing something mindless, such as commuting or waiting in line at a store, to learn great takeaways from some of the most popular books out there. You can download the audio versions of any of the book summaries so you can listen to them while you travel or are offline.

  • Curates a to-read list for you as you go through books
  • Gives notes on podcasts as well as books
  • Provides both audio and video summaries
  • Works offline
  • Around 40 books added per month
  • Available on iPhone and Android
  • Limited free plan
  • To fit in their time frame for summaries, longer books can be missing more key information than shorter books
  • With a free account, you are capped at only one book summary per day
  • Free trial for first 7 days
  • Paid plan starts at $8.34/month and is billed at $99.99 for the year
  • Month-to-month plan is $15.99/month

Pulitzer Center Update September 11, 2024

Five Years of Teaching 'The 1619 Project'

Our Impact: Five Years of Teaching The 1619 Project

On August 18, 2019, The New York Times Magazine published a special issue, The 1619 Project . It called readers to recognize the foundational role of the institution of slavery in the United States and the often unacknowledged contributions of Black Americans in moving the country toward the ideals of its founding documents. The publication date for the issue was a commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the first recorded sale of enslaved Africans to British settlers in the colony of Virginia.

This report is a commemoration of the fifth anniversary of that New York Times Magazine special issue and a documentation of the impact of the programming that Pulitzer Center K-12 Education and Campus and Outreach team members have implemented over the last five years as the original and a continued education partner of The 1619 Project .

The 1619 Project is one of the most creative and ambitious journalistic projects published in recent years. The Project continues to expand and creatively engage audiences through text and media resources from over 100 contributing journalists, historians, and artists that have been published in a print magazine, five-episode podcast, six-part docuseries, a book anthology, and a children’s book.

In the five years since the publication of the original issue, the Pulitzer Center teams have, likewise, explored and refined a variety of strategies for focused engagement of educators and students with the Project and the critical questions it raises. Over 1 million people have engaged with the reading guides we published in 2019 as the first initiative for this partnership. Since that time, we’ve developed a series of educator programs, building a network of 541 educator partners and reaching over 25,000 students in pre-K-12th grade and over 2,500 adult learners. We have facilitated 203 events and workshops attended by over 15,000 people, and published over 100 curricular materials on our award-winning 1619education.org website, which has been viewed over 400,000 times by people in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

The thousands of educators we’ve had the privilege of supporting, either directly through our 1619 Education programs or indirectly through our online curricular resource library, overwhelmingly emphasize the relevance and usefulness of our programming and resources in better understanding The 1619 Project and the history it covers. They share that these programs and resources have helped them develop a meaningful classroom experience for their students, further developing their skills as educators, and that they have inspired meaningful action in their classrooms and communities.

In our most recent survey of our website audience, 87% say that they would highly recommend our resources to other educators. The educators surveyed saw positive impacts on their learning environments with 78% of the educators reporting that the 1619 materials helped their students build new content knowledge, and 75% of educators surveyed reported that engaging with 1619 helped their students further develop critical thinking skills.

The Pulitzer Center’s 1619 Education programming connects educators and students to The 1619 Project resources and to one another, thus expanding and sustaining the influence of a journalistic project examining some of the most complex issues of our time.

In choosing the Pulitzer Center as an education partner, The New York Times Magazine put trust in our audience engagement strategy and commitment to partnerships that inspire action. Through our time implementing focused programming around The 1619 Project and Pulitzer Center-supported reporting on racial justice, we have developed new education partnerships built on that same trust and investment in our K-12 Education mission to cultivate a more curious, informed, empathetic, and engaged public.

In addition to the thousands of educators whose individual classrooms we’ve supported, our programs have built partnerships with over 120 K-12 schools and districts in 30 states and Washington, D.C. We’ve partnered with professors at 22 colleges and universities in 15 states and facilitated 17 workshops at academic education conferences.

We designed and hosted three annual 1619 Education Conferences for teacher program partners to share the work they’re doing with public audiences and to connect educators directly with Project contributors. Of 1619 Education Conference attendees surveyed this year, 98% said they would recommend the conference to other educators.

We’ve met teachers where they already are through collaborative events with organizations like the National Council of Teachers of English, National Council for the Social Studies, and the American Federation of Teachers. Our curricular resource library has been cited by the American Historical Association as one of the top no-cost resources for secondary teachers of history, and our team wrote the official 1619 book guides for the books’ publisher, Penguin Random House.

Our programming is a testament to the power of investing in targeted engagement to extend the reach and impact of quality journalism to key audiences and communities. A desire for increased engagement in 1619 programming also led to the launch of a dedicated newsletter that now regularly reaches over 6,000 educators.

When the Pulitzer Center agreed to be an education partner for the initial magazine publication of The 1619 Project , we had no way of knowing the impact that the Project would have in journalism, education, policy, and beyond. Now, five years later, the questions the Project raises about how we define the United States and understand its history are more relevant than ever.

As we come upon a historic presidential election and look ahead just two years to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we recognize this as a moment when many Americans are seeking to better understand how our past connects to our present and how to work together to create the future.

We are proud that we have become leaders in this work since The 1619 Project launched in 2019. We are excited to share the learning and impact of our 1619 Education programs with those hoping to join the consistently growing network of educators engaging with these questions, and continue our work engaging educators with breakthrough racial justice reporting into the future.
