Nowadays, everyone is obsessed with having a good body. Dieting, exercising, and lots of stuff they do to achieve their goal. Gym memberships usually grow, especially after the holidays when people eat so much. Then they go to the gym to burn the fat. Going to the gym is a commitment that people should make if they are serious about getting in shape.

Many reasons to go to gym. Of course, exercise is a priority. The gym has plenty of exercise machines that people can use to develop different muscle groups. Kulas (para. 1), in her article, “The Advantages of Going to the Gym Every Day,” says at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise should be done by adults five days a week, so going to the gym every day will meet that goal. It will result in good physical and mental health.

Aside from exercising, one can meet new friends like fitness instructors and others. It’s good to be with people with the same interests so that all can motivate each other to keep their fitness goals.

When one exercises, the heart becomes stronger, so it efficiently pumps blood to the body to keep vital organs healthy and in order. For example, blood pressure is maintained instead of spike high, cholesterol and triglyceride levels are kept low, and heart disease is kept at bay. It means there is less chance of a heart attack, stroke, or any other disease when one exercises regularly (Kulas, para. 3).

Combining aerobic exercise with other kinds of exercises like strength training with weights and stretching keeps muscles, ligaments, joints, and tendons healthy, flexible, and strong, so when one becomes older, he is stronger and has less risk of being out of balance and falling causing fractures or other injuries. One also gets good posture when muscles are well-formed. That is why the person should select the right exercises for each muscle group.

Suppose one does not like to work with exercise machines but still likes to exercise. In that case, gyms also offer group exercises, including boot camp exercises in teams, cycling sessions on stationary bicycles, martial arts exercises like body combat, boxing, etc., and plenty of dance routines like Zumba, HipHop, Ballroom Dancing, etc. It can be fun to meet new people, so social life comes alive.

One sleeps better also when the body gets good exercise. When one sleeps well, he wakes up with more energy to face the day and go about his work better in high spirits. The mood becomes better, too, so he is not grouchy with others. As one loses weight from exercising regularly and having a good balanced diet, one looks more fit and attractive, so a good body deserves good clothes that fit well.

On the other hand, some people go overboard in exercising, thinking all the positive results will double or they lose weight faster to get a leaner body. Andersen, in her article “9 Reasons to Skip Your Workout.. Sometimes”, advises that rest days should be inserted in between exercise days, especially if the workout is heavy.

She says muscles need rest periods in order to grow to heal the tiny tears that exercising causes. When they are repaired, it makes them stronger. She also says over-exercising may lead to too much weight loss or even weight gain due to the body’s built-in protective systems (para. 3). For women, over-exercising may interrupt their menstrual cycle because it affects the hormones.

As opposed to having moderate exercise that brings good sleep, over-exercising can affect one’s sleep cycle as well, and some people have trouble sleeping. Some even develop Insomnia or the inability to sleep well at night, so they resort to napping during the day only to catch up on the loss of sleep. This affects their performance at work or in school because they become very sleepy all the time. It also affects their mood because they always feel tired.

If one thinks over-exercising will curb their appetite so they become slim sooner, they are wrong. Andersen also says it can lead to overeating because one’s appetite is stimulated more if the body requires more energy to sustain its exertion in exercise, so the more exercise one does, the bigger his appetite.

Spending too much time in the gym also takes time away from more important things that a person needs to attend to, such as quality time for family and friends, engaging in a hobby that one enjoys, praying or meditating, or going to places one enjoys or has never been to before. Everything needs to be balanced: diet, exercise, work, leisure, and time for everything in order to lead a happy and fulfilled life.

As in everything else, too much of something good is bad, and in the case of over-exercising, it can lead to burnout. This means one has gone beyond his limits, and the body is not able to handle it. The person may have a breakdown, get sick, and become unable to exercise, work or be productive. So, it is much better to stick with a manageable exercise program at a time period that one can handle. That is about 30 minutes to an hour every day of moderate exercise coupled with a good diet plan.

The feeling that one gets after a good workout is fantastic. This is due to the release of endorphins, hormones that make people feel great. That is why many people can get addicted to working out, so they get that good feeling after. However, good workouts do not necessarily take place in the gym.

There are many other things one can do to exercise, such as following exercise routines on the DVD in the comfort of one’s home, running, jogging or biking around the block, swimming, dancing, or engaging in some sports like basketball, tennis, or badminton. One just needs to be creative in thinking of ways to move their body and exercise to get fit. They should also be able to do it regularly. Having various types of exercises within the week would be better so that it does not get boring.

However, if all else fails, there is always the gym so that one is really encouraged to actively exercise and not just sit around and watch others exercise. For one, there are gym instructors who can help members with the right exercises for their targeted body parts or for their whole body workout.

Another thing is there are other people who can motivate one to exercise, especially if they have good and fit bodies, to inspire others to achieve the same goals. Still, another is the membership fee that one needs to pay, so one should not waste it by not actively using the gym facilities to the fullest.

Once an individual reaches his goal of having a physically fit body, he should be able to maintain it and not let go of the diet and exercise routines he has mastered. He will realize the many benefits of having a good, healthy, and fit body. Not only will other people notice his new, improved appearance and be impressed, but more importantly, his health ensures that he will be less likely to get sick. This helps in keeping a happy, healthy, and productive life.

Use figurative language

Figurative language consists of devices like metaphor and simile that use words in non-literal ways to create a memorable effect. This is essential in a descriptive essay; it’s what gives your writing its creative edge and makes your description unique.

Take the following description of a park.

This tells us something about the place, but it’s a bit too literal and not likely to be memorable.

If we want to make the description more likely to stick in the reader’s mind, we can use some figurative language.

Here we have used a simile to compare the park to a face and the trees to facial hair. This is memorable because it’s not what the reader expects; it makes them look at the park from a different angle.

You don’t have to fill every sentence with figurative language, but using these devices in an original way at various points throughout your essay will keep the reader engaged and convey your unique perspective on your subject.

Use your senses

Another key aspect of descriptive writing is the use of sensory details. This means referring not only to what something looks like, but also to smell, sound, touch, and taste.

Obviously not all senses will apply to every subject, but it’s always a good idea to explore what’s interesting about your subject beyond just what it looks like.

Even when your subject is more abstract, you might find a way to incorporate the senses more metaphorically, as in this descriptive essay about fear.

Choose the right words

Writing descriptively involves choosing your words carefully. The use of effective adjectives is important, but so is your choice of adverbs , verbs , and even nouns.

It’s easy to end up using clichéd phrases—“cold as ice,” “free as a bird”—but try to reflect further and make more precise, original word choices. Clichés provide conventional ways of describing things, but they don’t tell the reader anything about your unique perspective on what you’re describing.

Try looking over your sentences to find places where a different word would convey your impression more precisely or vividly. Using a thesaurus can help you find alternative word choices.

  • My cat runs across the garden quickly and jumps onto the fence to watch it from above.
  • My cat crosses the garden nimbly and leaps onto the fence to survey it from above.

However, exercise care in your choices; don’t just look for the most impressive-looking synonym you can find for every word. Overuse of a thesaurus can result in ridiculous sentences like this one:

On Sunday afternoons I like to spend my time in the garden behind my house. Sitting out in the garden, I feel serene. I feel at home. And yet I always feel there is more to discover. The bounds of my garden may be small, but there is a whole world contained within it, and it is one I will never get tired of inhabiting.

Every weekend, there is a war that rages between my body and my mind. While the mind is always willing to engage in the activity, my body jerks at the realization of the pain and trouble that awaits it at the gym. At exactly two in the afternoon every Saturday and Sunday, I don my armor that comprises sports shoes, a sleeveless shirt, and shorts and head to the gym. Looking at me, one would see a world gymnastic champion in the making. I then put my headphones and enter the gym, ready for a four-hour workout.

The gym room is a beehive of activities with different people stretching their muscles, some running, and others jogging. Others do pushups while others stretch different parts of their body. In the gym, bright industrial lights dangle from the gypsum ceiling, and the air is filled with a pungent smell of sweat and hums of people going about their activities. While there are many activities that one can participate in, I prefer lifting the dumbbells first to keep my muscles in control. I sit down on the bench and get hold of the metal bar that has two dumbbells at its ends. I start with the smaller one pound dumbbells and lift them ten times before adding some more weight. The sweat from the previous occupant rents the air, but this does not derail me in any way as I am also aware that I will leave a similar sweat behind.

A quick glance at the gym room exposes paraphernalia of tools and equipment which are useful in the gym. There are basic free weight machines, benches, dumbbells, and squat racks. There is also a large cable machine that stands in the middle of the room. Beside it are chest machines, and Hammers use to strengthen the shoulders. Just a few meters from where I sit are two treadmills of different colors. One of them is silver, while the other one has a dark sheen with a few white spots on its sides. Close to this are elliptical chines, stair masters, and abdominal machines.

The floor is well tiled with floor tiles that match the wall tiles. Once one is in here, he or she is met with the atmosphere that encourages them to spend as much time as possible trying on different equipment. Sweat droplets, the product of extraneous exercises, make the floor shine like a mirror placed against the sun. Above the wall tiles are mirrors that are fitted all around the room that give them room a heavenly ambiance. After a period lifting the dumbbells, I head left to the adjacent room that was equipped with leg machines. Here, I intend to perform some leg workouts since the dumbbells worked a lot on the chest and the arms. The leg machines here are arranged exquisitely, making it easy for one to choose their machine of choice. They include calf machines, leg extension machines, leg press machines, and leg curl machines.

Having done my afternoon’s workout, I jog out of the room feeling tired and nursing some muscle aches. However, I am glad since it is through that pain that I am able to keep my body fit. With Saturday gone, I wait for Sunday to complete the weekend in the usual style.

"No Pain, No Gain" - A descriptive essay on my experience in the gym.

For an hour and a half each day, a war rages between my body and my mind, my vanity and my lethargy. My masochistic need for pain battles the comfort of quitting, angels and demons fighting over the same fundamental question: Why the hell am I here?

It’s time. I put aside whatever I’m doing and don my armor: shorts, running shoes and a sleeveless shirt. My heart rate accelerates as I put in my headphones. To begin the ritual, I take a tasteless white powder that allows my muscles to produce more force for a longer period of time. I take a scoop of the bleached substance. It’s fine texture is deceivingly gritty on the surface of my tongue and I need a substantial amount of cold water to wash it down. There’s no going back. Time speeds up.

I’m here; full of determination, roaring music in both ears, water bottle in hand. This is my Iron Temple, my second home. Bright industrial lights dangle from the ceiling; pungent sweat invades my nostrils; echoes of agony make me smile. I come here for only one reason, improvement through torture. No pain, no gain.

I sit down on the bench and grip the metal bar, cold and sleek. The sweat of the previous occupant stains the soft rubber cushion where I place my head. As I look up, I see the gargantuan metal fans slice the air above me. I go through the motions, gradually increasing weight until I reach my work-set. Stacking fifty-five pounds on each side until they total a hundred-and-fifty pounds, I feel nervous. Then I remember why I’m here. I lie down on the bench, arch my back, grip the bar, take a deep breath and begin.

Beads of sweat roll down my face. A single drop lands on my tongue; it tastes acrid. I feel alive. I’ve conquered the bench and I am on the last set of my deadlifts. An ancient and powerful exercise, I feel the countless hours of repetition building up to this moment. I have come far, but I must go further. I squat down, clasp the two-hundred-and-forty-five pound bar, right hand over, left hand under, at shoulder-width grip. I arch my back, look into the mirror, and explode up. On the way down, the grated segment of the metal bar scrapes along my shins. Blood begins to ooze from the open cut. I continue, repeating the motion, drawing more blood with each repetition. I finish my set, set the bar down. A loud boom reverberates through the room. The bloody scene on my leg doesn’t daunt me. It is nothing but new scars replacing old ones.

“Pain makes me grow. Growing is what I want. Therefore, for me pain is pleasure” (Schwarzenegger). Arnold’s famous quote echoes through my mind as I step underneath the bar. I strain my shoulders against the seemingly impossible burden of two-hundred-and-five pounds, lifting the mass off its support. I squat down, the weight lying heavily on my shoulders. I feel like the Atlas of my time. The music in my ears drives me upward, heart pumping with every beat of the melody. Back down again; I squat as low as my ligaments allow me. I roar as I push up, veins bulging through my neck. “ONE MORE REP!” I scream to myself. This is the “transcendent rep”, a repetition taken beyond physical exhaustion with the purpose of gaining mental and spiritual strength, the kind found only in self-transcendence. Despite my body writhing in agony I move up, extending and contracting several muscles in my legs and back to complete the motion. I re-rack the weight, lean on the bar and look at myself in the mirror; I am proud of the progress I’ve made.

It’s over. My body is broken but my mind is victorious. The high is euphoric. I am not who I was when I walked into the gym. I am better, stronger and faster in every way possible. This is only accomplished through a mixture of blood and sweat. Pain. But I will come back for the pain, day after day, because without pain, there is no gain.

2. Body paragraph 

A descriptive essay usually has three body paragraphs. However, the length and number of paragraphs may vary depending on the complexity and scope of your essay topic. 

A body paragraph comprises of a topic sentence that focuses on a particular aspect of the subject. The topic sentence is elaborated upon by sensory, contextual, and emotional descriptors. Each paragraph ends with a transition sentence that provides context for the next paragraph.

The conclusion of your essay should begin with the restatement of your thesis statement along with its broader implications. You can then provide a quick summary of all the important aspects mentioned in the body paragraphs. 

Finally, you can end your essay with a powerful statement or a clincher. This can include anything from a powerful lesson to a thought-provoking quote. The goal is to leave the reader with something to think about.

Sensory descriptors are one of the most important aspects of a descriptive essay. The key is to make the reader experience what you’ve experienced. This means appealing to all five senses of the reader. 

Although the visual aspect is important, you should also focus on how something sounds, feels, and smells. The experience of touching, smelling, or feeling something is more evocative than simply viewing it. 

Some sensory descriptors are used in a literal sense:

The smell of rain in July takes me back to my childhood. The pitter-patter reminds me of my mother’s footsteps, bringing us delicious snacks. 

They can also be used metaphorically:

The beautiful, cold gaze of the moon stunned us all.

3. Use evocative language

It is a good idea to use strong, evocative language that conveys an intense action or emotion. Creative use of words is an important factor in writing a descriptive essay since passive language leads to a dull, boring essay.  Let’s take a look at the following sentences: 

The 100-meter race was completed by Usain Bolt in under 10 seconds.

Usian Bolt whizzed through the 100-meter race in under 10 seconds!

The use of the word “completed” indicates no action and the use of passive voice makes the example dull. On the other hand, the phrase “whizzed through” indicates speed and intensity which makes the second example much more interesting to read.

The outline of a descriptive essay is less structured compared to most academic essay types. It merely serves as a guideline that you can use to flesh out your essay. It also helps you develop a coherent structure and logical flow for your topic sentences.
