As humans , all of us live in a society are bound to a neighbourhood. It is an essential place which has a great impact on our lives. So much so that it does determine where we are in life and how we are doing. It is a fact that if we are not happy in our neighbourhood, we will not live peacefully. Through my neighborhood essay, I will explain about my neighbourhood and the reasons why I love it.

All About My Neighbourhood

I live in a great neighbourhood. It is wonderful because it offers us a lot of facilities. The green park near my house makes the area much more beautiful. Similarly, the swings in the park ensure the kids get to play cheerfully all day long.

Moreover, my neighbourhood also has many other bonuses. A grocery store adjacent to the park makes sure people get all their needs fulfilled without having to go far. All my neighbours buy their things from that grocery store only.

The owner also lives in the same area so he is very cordial with everyone. The grocery store saves everyone a long trip to the market and also their time. The park in my neighbourhood remains clean at all times.

The maintenance team makes sure they clean and sanitize it from time to time. It allows my neighbours to sit and relax in the evenings and take walks in the morning. The clean and fresh air gives everyone a great experience.

Why I Love My Neighbourhood

Apart from the top-notch facilities available in my neighbourhood, we also have amazing neighbours who make our lives better. A good neighbourhood is not made of facilities only but good people as well.

I got lucky in this case because my neighbours are very sweet. They help in maintaining the peace of the area so everyone lives in harmony. I have seen very often that if there is an emergency at anyone’s place, everyone rushes to help.

Similarly, we also organize events from time to time so that the whole neighbourhood gathers and enjoy themselves. I have a lot of friends in my neighbourhood with whom I play.

Most of them are my age so we meet every evening to cycle together and play on swings. We also go to each other’s birthday parties and sing and dance. The most favourite thing about my neighbourhood is definitely the residents.

I always notice how we never let any poor person go back empty-handed. My neighbourhood also organizes a donation drive every year. In this, each family donates clothes, toys and other useful commodities for the needy.

Thus, we all live together as a large family. Even though we live in different houses, our hearts are bounded by the same love and respect for each other.

Introduction

On the Common Application, a number of colleges have begun to require that students respond to a supplemental essay question that sounds something like this:

Tell us a bit more about a community you are a part of.

Here is the exact wording from a few schools:

University of Michigan: “Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it. (250 words)”

Duke University: “We seek a talented, engaged student body that embodies the wide range of human experience; we believe that the diversity of our students makes our community stronger. If you'd like to share a perspective you bring or experiences you've had to help us understand you better—perhaps related to a community you belong to, your sexual orientation or gender identity, or your family or cultural background—we encourage you to do so. Real people are reading your application, and we want to do our best to understand and appreciate the real people applying. (250 words)

(Old) Brown University: “Tell us about a place or community you call home. How has it shaped your perspective? (250 words)

I love this essay question.

Why? Because, while this essay is largely asking about your place within that community, it is a great opportunity to share more about you, and how you will most likely engage with that community (or other communities) on your future college campus.

It’s a chance to say: “Here’s how I connect with folks in this community. And if accepted to your college, I’ll probably be active in getting involved with that same community and others on your college campus.”

And colleges want students who are going to be active in engaging with their community.

How to Write The Community Essay

Step 1: decide what community you want to write about.

How? This may seem obvious, but it can be really helpful to first brainstorm the communities you’re already a part of.

Here’s how:

Create a “communities” chart by listing all the communities you’re a part of. Keep in mind that communities can be defined by...

Place: groups of people who live/work/play near one another

Action: groups of people who create change in the world by building, doing, or solving something together (Examples: Black Lives Matter, Girls Who Code, March for Our Lives)

Interest: groups of people coming together based on shared interest, experience, or expertise

Circumstance: groups of people brought together either by chance or external events/situations

Use four columns in your chart, like this.

Your turn.

What communities are you a part of?

Spend 5-10 minutes making a list of as many as you can think of.

In fact, here’s a simple GoogleDoc you can download and fill in right now.

Once you’ve completed that exercise for several of the communities you are a part of, you might start to see one community seems to be the most obvious one to write about.

Go with the one that you feel gives the best chance to help you share more about yourself.

Step 2: Use the BEABIES exercise to generate your essay content

Once you’ve chosen a community or two, map out your content using the BEABIES Exercise . That exercise asks:

What did you actually do in that community? (Tip: use active verbs like “organized” and “managed” to clarify your responsibilities).

What kinds of problems did you solve (personally, locally, or globally)?

What specific impact did you have?

What did you learn (skills, qualities, values)?

How did you apply the lessons you learned in and outside of that community?

Don’t skip that step. It’s important.

Step 3: Pick a structure (Narrative or Montage)

The Narrative Structure . This structure works well for students who have faced a challenge in this community. Otherwise, the Montage Structure works well.

Consider answering these three questions in your essay if you choose the Narrative Structure:

What challenge did you face?

What did you do about it?

What did you learn?

Here’s an example of a narrative “community” essay based on a challenge that tackles those three questions, roughly in order:

I look around my room, dimly lit by an orange light. On my desk, a framed picture of an Asian family beaming their smiles, buried among US history textbooks and The Great Gatsby. A Korean ballad streams from two tiny computer speakers. Pamphlets of American colleges scattered on the floor. A cold December wind wafts a strange infusion of ramen and leftover pizza. On the wall in the far back, a Korean flag hangs besides a Led Zeppelin poster. Do I consider myself Korean or American? A few years back, I would have replied: “Neither.” The frustrating moments of miscommunication, the stifling homesickness, and the impossible dilemma of deciding between the Korean or American table in the dining hall, all fueled my identity crisis. Standing in the “Foreign Passports” section at JFK, I have always felt out of place. Sure, I held a Korean passport in my hands, and I loved kimchi and Yuna Kim and knew the Korean Anthem by heart. While this author doesn’t go into too much depth on the “What did you do about it?” question named above, we do get a sense of the challenge he faced and what he learned.

The Montage Structure. This is another potential structure, often times great for essays that don’t necessarily focus on a particular challenge.

I belong to a community of storytellers. Throughout my childhood, my mother and I spent countless hours immersed in the magical land of bedtime stories. It was a ritual that I will never forget. In school I met many other storytellers—teachers, coaches, and fellow students whose stories taught me valuable lessons and enabled me to share stories of my own. My stories took shape through my involvement with theatre. I have learned that telling stories can be just as powerful as hearing them. When I tell a story, I can shape the world I live in and share my deepest emotions with the audience. This is exactly why I love theatre so much. The Uncommon Connections Exercise

First: Use the Values Exercise at this link to brainstorm predictable values that other students might describe in their essay and then vow not to use those values.

Second : Identify 3-4 uncommon connections (values other students would be unlikely to think of) and give an example of each.

Third : Describe one example per paragraph, perhaps in chronological order.

Another idea: It’s also possible to combine the narrative and montage structures by describing a challenge WHILE also describing a range of values and lessons.

Here’s an example that does this:

The Pumpkin House (Narrative + Montage Combo Structure)

I was raised in “The Pumpkin House.” Every Autumn, on the lawn between the sidewalk and the road, grows our pumpkin. Every summer, we procure seeds from giant pumpkins and plant them in this strip of land. Every fall, the pumpkin grows to be giant. This annual ritual became well known in the community and became the defining feature of our already quirky house. The pumpkin was not just a pumpkin, but a catalyst to creating interactions and community. Conversations often start with “aren’t you the girl in the pumpkin house?” My English teacher knew about our pumpkin and our chickens. His curiosity and weekly updates about the pumpkin helped us connect.

The author touches on the values of family and ritual in the first few sentences. She then mentions the word “community” explicitly, which clearly connects the essay to the prompt. In the second paragraph she mentions the value of connection.

One year, we found our pumpkin splattered across the street. We were devastated; the pumpkin was part of our identity. Word spread, and people came to our house to share in our dismay. Clearly, that pumpkin enriched our life and the entire neighborhoods’.

Here she introduces the problem. Then she raises the stakes: the pumpkin was part of her family’s identity as well as that of the community.

The next morning, our patch contained twelve new pumpkins. Anonymous neighbors left these, plus, a truly gigantic 200 lb. pumpkin on our doorstep.

Describing the neighborhood’s response offers a vivid example of what makes for a great community.

Growing up, the pumpkin challenged me as I wasn’t always comfortable being the center of attention. But in retrospect, I realize that there’s a bit of magic in growing something from a seed and tending it in public. I witnessed how this act of sharing creates authentic community spirit. I wouldn’t be surprised if some day I started my own form of quirky pumpkin growing and reap the benefit of true community.

The author makes another uncommon connection in her conclusion with the unexpected idea that “the pumpkin challenged [her].” She then uses beautiful language to reflect on the lessons she learned: “there’s a bit of magic in growing something from a seed and tending it in public.”

Step 4: Write a first draft!

It sometimes helps to outline and draft one or two different essays on different activities, just to see which community might end up being a better topic for your essay.

What Makes a Neighborhood Great?

Through the years PPS has learned a number of key lessons about what sets apart a great neighborhood from a mediocre one, which are distilled into The Great Neighborhood Book . The key is having a number of good places within the neighborhood where people can go to relax, have fun, and see one another. These are the basic principles of what we call Placemaking, which are outlined below:

Good places promote sociability These are the spots where you run into people you know, where you take friends and family when you want to show them the neighborhood. These places become the heart and soul of the neighborhood because they offer people many different reasons to go there.
Good places have lots of things to do The places people love most are the ones where they can pursue a variety of activities. Without opportunities to do something more than sit and look around, the experience you have in that place is "thin" -- there is nothing to keep you there for any length of time.
Good places are comfortable and attractive They beckon you to come visit. Flowers, comfortable benches with a nice view, and attractive lighting all make you feel this is a place you want to come to often. In contrast, a place that lacks these kind of amenities often feels unwelcoming and a bit threatening. It may actually be unsafe or just feel unsafe, but either way no one wants to be there.
Good places are accessible These places are clearly identifiable from a distance, easy to enter when you get closer, and it is simple to understand how you use them. A space that is not accessible will be end up empty, forlorn and often dilapidated.
Good places capitalize on the Power of 10 Think of the 10 most important places in your neighborhood. It could be the main shopping street, a park, playground, an interesting shop, a library, post office etc. Zoom in and think about one of these places and try to write down ten fun or useful things you can do there. For example at the post office, you can mail a letter or pick up your mail. At post offices which are truly good places, you can catch up on the community gossip, scan a bulletin board full of local happenings, and sit outside on a bench and open your mail. That makes it easy to chat with neighbors or just peoplewatch. If there is a coffee shop or vending cart nearby, you can even get a drink and sit and enjoy the passing scene. The Power of 10 is the simple but important idea that the more things there are to do in a place, the more beloved and central that place will become in your neighborhood.
Good places are inspired by the people who live there The big question is, of course, how do you begin to create the good places that every neighborhood craves? What process can you use to build spots where people want to hang out? Long experience has shown us that bottom-up rather than top-down strategies to create or revitalize public spaces work best. This approach is based on the simple idea that the people who live in a neighborhood are the world's experts on that particular place. Any project to improve things should be guided by the community's wisdom, not the dictates of professional disciplines. This is the most important lesson about making great neighborhoods we have learned in 30 years of work.

In a society that did not value disabled people in general, blindness was particularly stigmatized, and lack of access to reading and writing was a significant barrier to social participation. The idea of tactile reading was not entirely new, but existing methods based on sighted systems were difficult to learn and use. As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness. This essay begins by discussing the situation of blind people in nineteenth-century Europe. It then describes the invention of Braille and the gradual process of its acceptance within blind education. Subsequently, it explores the wide-ranging effects of this invention on blind people’s social and cultural lives.

Lack of access to reading and writing put blind people at a serious disadvantage in nineteenth-century society. Text was one of the primary methods through which people engaged with culture, communicated with others, and accessed information; without a well-developed reading system that did not rely on sight, blind people were excluded from social participation (Weygand, 2009). While disabled people in general suffered from discrimination, blindness was widely viewed as the worst disability, and it was commonly believed that blind people were incapable of pursuing a profession or improving themselves through culture (Weygand, 2009). This demonstrates the importance of reading and writing to social status at the time: without access to text, it was considered impossible to fully participate in society. Blind people were excluded from the sighted world, but also entirely dependent on sighted people for information and education.

In France, debates about how to deal with disability led to the adoption of different strategies over time. While people with temporary difficulties were able to access public welfare, the most common response to people with long-term disabilities, such as hearing or vision loss, was to group them together in institutions (Tombs, 1996). At first, a joint institute for the blind and deaf was created, and although the partnership was motivated more by financial considerations than by the well-being of the residents, the institute aimed to help people develop skills valuable to society (Weygand, 2009). Eventually blind institutions were separated from deaf institutions, and the focus shifted towards education of the blind, as was the case for the Royal Institute for Blind Youth, which Louis Braille attended (Jimenez et al, 2009). The growing acknowledgement of the uniqueness of different disabilities led to more targeted education strategies, fostering an environment in which the benefits of a specifically blind education could be more widely recognized.

Several different systems of tactile reading can be seen as forerunners to the method Louis Braille developed, but these systems were all developed based on the sighted system. The Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris taught the students to read embossed roman letters, a method created by the school’s founder, Valentin Hauy (Jimenez et al., 2009). Reading this way proved to be a rather arduous task, as the letters were difficult to distinguish by touch. The embossed letter method was based on the reading system of sighted people, with minimal adaptation for those with vision loss. As a result, this method did not gain significant success among blind students.

Louis Braille was bound to be influenced by his school’s founder, but the most influential pre-Braille tactile reading system was Charles Barbier’s night writing. A soldier in Napoleon’s army, Barbier developed a system in 1819 that used 12 dots with a five line musical staff (Kersten, 1997). His intention was to develop a system that would allow the military to communicate at night without the need for light (Herron, 2009). The code developed by Barbier was phonetic (Jimenez et al., 2009); in other words, the code was designed for sighted people and was based on the sounds of words, not on an actual alphabet. Barbier discovered that variants of raised dots within a square were the easiest method of reading by touch (Jimenez et al., 2009). This system proved effective for the transmission of short messages between military personnel, but the symbols were too large for the fingertip, greatly reducing the speed at which a message could be read (Herron, 2009). For this reason, it was unsuitable for daily use and was not widely adopted in the blind community.

Nevertheless, Barbier’s military dot system was more efficient than Hauy’s embossed letters, and it provided the framework within which Louis Braille developed his method. Barbier’s system, with its dashes and dots, could form over 4000 combinations (Jimenez et al., 2009). Compared to the 26 letters of the Latin alphabet, this was an absurdly high number. Braille kept the raised dot form, but developed a more manageable system that would reflect the sighted alphabet. He replaced Barbier’s dashes and dots with just six dots in a rectangular configuration (Jimenez et al., 2009). The result was that the blind population in France had a tactile reading system using dots (like Barbier’s) that was based on the structure of the sighted alphabet (like Hauy’s); crucially, this system was the first developed specifically for the purposes of the blind.

While the Braille system gained immediate popularity with the blind students at the Institute in Paris, it had to gain acceptance among the sighted before its adoption throughout France. This support was necessary because sighted teachers and leaders had ultimate control over the propagation of Braille resources. Many of the teachers at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth resisted learning Braille’s system because they found the tactile method of reading difficult to learn (Bullock & Galst, 2009). This resistance was symptomatic of the prevalent attitude that the blind population had to adapt to the sighted world rather than develop their own tools and methods. Over time, however, with the increasing impetus to make social contribution possible for all, teachers began to appreciate the usefulness of Braille’s system (Bullock & Galst, 2009), realizing that access to reading could help improve the productivity and integration of people with vision loss. It took approximately 30 years, but the French government eventually approved the Braille system, and it was established throughout the country (Bullock & Galst, 2009).

Although Blind people remained marginalized throughout the nineteenth century, the Braille system granted them growing opportunities for social participation. Most obviously, Braille allowed people with vision loss to read the same alphabet used by sighted people (Bullock & Galst, 2009), allowing them to participate in certain cultural experiences previously unavailable to them. Written works, such as books and poetry, had previously been inaccessible to the blind population without the aid of a reader, limiting their autonomy. As books began to be distributed in Braille, this barrier was reduced, enabling people with vision loss to access information autonomously. The closing of the gap between the abilities of blind and the sighted contributed to a gradual shift in blind people’s status, lessening the cultural perception of the blind as essentially different and facilitating greater social integration.

The Braille system also had important cultural effects beyond the sphere of written culture. Its invention later led to the development of a music notation system for the blind, although Louis Braille did not develop this system himself (Jimenez, et al., 2009). This development helped remove a cultural obstacle that had been introduced by the popularization of written musical notation in the early 1500s. While music had previously been an arena in which the blind could participate on equal footing, the transition from memory-based performance to notation-based performance meant that blind musicians were no longer able to compete with sighted musicians (Kersten, 1997). As a result, a tactile musical notation system became necessary for professional equality between blind and sighted musicians (Kersten, 1997).

Braille paved the way for dramatic cultural changes in the way blind people were treated and the opportunities available to them. Louis Braille’s innovation was to reimagine existing reading systems from a blind perspective, and the success of this invention required sighted teachers to adapt to their students’ reality instead of the other way around. In this sense, Braille helped drive broader social changes in the status of blindness. New accessibility tools provide practical advantages to those who need them, but they can also change the perspectives and attitudes of those who do not.

At college level, you must properly cite your sources in all essays , research papers , and other academic texts (except exams and in-class exercises).

Add a citation whenever you quote , paraphrase , or summarize information or ideas from a source. You should also give full source details in a bibliography or reference list at the end of your text.

Creating a better neighborhood is something that many of us want to do for very obvious reasons. Living in a good neighborhood will pay dividends in terms of higher property values and a more enjoyable place to live. Ultimately, though, bettering your neighborhood is a relatively complicated endeavor. Not only do you need to take action yourself, but you’ve got to get your neighbors to act in order to create a better community. Fortunately, with some work and some thought, you’ll be on the road to making your neighborhood a better place.

Starting at Home

Paint your home (as needed).
Make necessary repairs to your home. This includes rotten wood, broken shutters, and more.
While some repairs might be expensive, basic maintenance (paint touchups and replacing wood rot) can be inexpensive if you do it yourself. [1] X Research source

Cut your grass regularly. This might mean cutting every week or two depending on the season and your region.
Remove fallen limbs, sticks, and other organic debris from your yard.
Sod or seed your yard, if you lack grass. [2] X Research source

Step 3 Avoid accumulating junk in your yard.

Don’t store your collection of classic project cars in your front yard or where your neighbors can see them. If you are serious about your fifteen project cars, put up a privacy fence to protect them and hide them from sight.
Make sure trash makes it to the curb on trash pick-up day.
Avoid storing excess furniture, Christmas decorations, your lawn mower, or other collectables on your porch.

Step 4 Don't create problems for your neighbors.

Don’t let your animals roam freely. Free ranging dogs may chase children on bikes, runners, or otherwise cause problems. Free roaming cats could kill birds, squirrels, and more.
Avoid blocking the path to your neighbor’s driveway. This could include not putting trash on the curb next to your neighbor’s driveway, or parking your car (or visitors’ cars) in certain spots.

Monitor your dog (or other pets) and make sure they don’t bark or otherwise disturb your neighbors on a continual basis.
If you have parties, make sure to limit the noise you produce and turn all music off at a reasonable hour. In many cases, eleven or midnight on the weekend is a good time to turn your music off. Nine or ten at night is a good time to turn it off on a week day.
Try not to blast the radio too loud as you’re washing your car.
Avoid sawing wood or cutting down a tree at inopportune times. Home improvement projects are best done between the hours of 10 and 5 on weekends. [3] X Research source

Building a Community

Step 1 Make friends with your neighbors.

Always smile and say hello when you see them walking by, and greet new neighbors with a pie or other gift.
Introduce yourself to new neighbors.

Step 2 Organize an annual block party or barbecue.

Plan an annual party.
Ask your neighbors and others in the neighborhood to help you plan it.
Invite everyone in your neighborhood.
Organize mixers and activities for kids and everyone else.

Arrange for your club to meet once or twice a month.
Hold fundraisers for supplies.
If your neighborhood has a homeowner's association, coordinate with them.

Step 4 Do random acts of kindness for your neighbors.

If one of your neighbors is sick, bring them soup.
If someone’s spouse has passed away, visit them and comfort them.
If you know someone is hurting financially, offer to pick up their utility bill one month.

Troubleshooting Problems in your Neighborhood

Print out a flyer that calls for volunteers to join a crime prevention organization in your neighborhood.
Talk to your immediate neighbors and anyone else in the neighborhood you may be familiar with.
Hold weekly or monthly meetings in order to plan ways to prevent crime in your neighborhood.
Contact the local police department and ask for them to send an officer to speak at your meetings. [8] X Research source

Taking care of your neighbor’s pets or plants when they are on vacation.

Volunteer as a mentor for troubled neighborhood kids.
Pick up litter.

Step 4 Try to mediate neighborhood disputes.

Suggesting ways to resolve conflict between neighbors who have problems.
Inviting conflicting parties to your home for coffee and a conversation. Let them know beforehand, and let them know you'll act as a mediator between the two.
That you should always be careful when putting yourself in between conflicting parties. You might be causing problems for yourself, too.

I too live in a great and wonderful neighborhood. It is very pleasant and has lot many facilities. With a good park nearby, making it the main attraction, our neighborhood also has many other added bonuses.

The grocery store is nearby which makes it easy for all residents to make an immediate purchase, we have a bus stop close by, so that people do not have to travel long for means of transportation.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

The park is what makes it a lot more beautiful as it is well maintained and makes it a gathering place for all my neighbors in the evening for chit chatting and playing for kids. There is good air and we enjoy the evenings while we are at this park.

But, like every neighborhood, among the good people that make it lively and great, there would some odd ones out that would spoil the entire fun. Some people in our neighborhood are very careless and untidy. They would just litter places and throw their garbage just like that outside. This is really troublesome and causes lot of difficulty to the others in the neighborhood. They also behave badly and have been warned several times. Such people spoil the fun and unity in a society and make it a nuisance to everyone surrounding them.

Apart from those kinds of negative people, our neighborhood is peaceful and all others live in harmony.

In case of any kind of emergency to any resident, we all would help each other at the time of need. I have many friends in my neighborhood and we all enjoy playing in the evenings. We have celebrations for every occasions and festivals and this makes it lot more fun and enjoyment for all of us in the neighborhood. I like my neighborhood and would like to make changes in the negative aspects concerning us in the neighborhood.

$4.2 Million Massachusetts ‘Murder Mansion’ Where Businessman Killed His Wife and Daughter Goes Up for Sale

A sprawling Massachusetts mansion that was the site of a gruesome murder-suicide has gone on the market for $4.2 million—with the property listing describing it as a “perfect family home.”

The 11-bedroom, 11.5-bathroom property in Dover, MA , was put on the market earlier this week, just eight months after its former owner, businessman Rakesh “Rick” Kamal , fatally shot his wife and their teenage daughter before turning the gun on himself.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the listing makes no mention of the property’s chilling history, instead focusing on the home’s many amenities and its picturesque surroundings.

“This home is seamlessly integrated into the idyllic, manicured grounds overlooking wooded hiking paths, bridle trails, and a tranquil pond in the extremely desirable Wilsons Way neighborhood,” it reads.

The description goes on to call attention to the mansion’s four-car garage, formal and informal dining rooms, newly renovated gourmet kitchen, library, and marble-topped wet bar.

“A perfect family home, this property offers a 14-seat home theater, relaxing family room with a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, 20X40 indoor pool, fully-equipped gym, sauna with a steam shower, extensive storage, and 5, 000 bottle wine cellar,” the listing adds.

The 27-room home, which was built in 2000, was purchased by Kamal and his wife, Teena , for $4 million in 2019, according to multiple reports.

On Dec. 28, 2023, just three days after Christmas, the businessman fatally shot his 54-year-old spouse and their 18-year-old daughter, Arianna , before killing himself.

Earlier this month, it emerged that the family—who appeared to the outside world as living an incredibly lavish and privileged lifestyle—had been buried in debt and were facing eviction from the property on the day of their deaths.

It is understood that Kamal’s younger sibling, Manoj Kamal , told police that his older brother owed him $150,000, the Boston Globe reported, and that the businessman had recently lost his home to foreclosure after failing to keep up with mortgage payments.

The outlet states that Kamal took out a $3.8 million loan on the home, which was meant to have been repaid by 2021.

Kamal reportedly left a note for the person who had been scheduled to pick up the keys, according to Fox News , informing them that they should “call the police” before entering the property.

He also noted that he had marked each of the bedrooms in which the bodies could be found with a sheet of paper.

“Please note,” the message read. “Before entering call the Police to first check three bedrooms on the second floor. Each room will be marked by a white sheet of paper.”

Disciplinary Charges Against Top New York Police Official Are Dismissed

Commissioner Edward Caban of the New York Police Department dismissed the disciplinary charges against a top chief who had interfered with the arrest of a retired officer who had chased three boys while armed, according to an internal document.

Jeffrey Maddrey, the chief of department and the city’s second-highest-ranking officer, was facing a loss of 10 vacation days after an independent oversight board found that he had abused his authority when he ordered the release of the retired officer, Kruythoff Forrester, whom he had once supervised. A Brooklyn sergeant arrested Mr. Forrester on Nov. 24, 2021, after he had found probable cause that Mr. Forrester had menaced the boys with a gun .

In May 2023, Keechant Sewell, the police commissioner at the time, agreed with the oversight panel, the Civilian Complaint Review Board , that Chief Maddrey had “improperly influenced an arrest.” At the time, her office informed the chief that she had agreed to impose the board’s recommendation to take away the vacation days.

But on Monday, Commissioner Caban stamped “approved” on the findings of the Police Department’s deputy commissioner of trials, Rosemarie Maldonado, who concluded in July that the board “lacks jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute the case,” according to a copy of the document.

Ms. Maldonado issued her recommendation two weeks before a public three-day disciplinary trial had been scheduled to start at Police Headquarters. The trial, which would have been overseen by the department, would have forced Chief Maddrey, an ally of Mayor Eric Adams, to take the stand to justify his actions. The department’s internal affairs unit has determined that he did not abuse his authority.

In a statement, the police confirmed that Commissioner Caban had approved the recommendation of the deputy commissioner of trials.
