  • Evolution of 4G The first commercial deployment was by Telia Sonera and NetCom Telia Sonera branded the network “4G” The modem devices on offer were manufactured by Samsung (dongle GT-B3710) The network infrastructure were created by Huawei (in Oslo) and Ericsson (in Stockholm)
  • Evolution of Processors and DSP Technology for 4G
  • Which countries have 4G? Except for the Scandinavian countries, a few countries have started the 4G commercially In the US, Sprint Nextel initiated the service Countries using 4gare Japan, Korea, Germany,Spain, China, and England.
  • A look at fundamental requirements
  • Infrastructure for 4G There are three primary technologies that support 4G – WiMax, LTE, and UMB The main doubt is whether to implement WiMax or Long Term Evolution(LTE) The advantages of LTE are: (i) Faster speed with 100 Mbps for download and 50 Mbps for upload (ii) It makes CDMA and GSM database moot (iii) It offers both FDD and TDD duplexing
  • WiMax WiMAX(Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave. Access) WiMax technology might not achieve the required rate in a high-density area However, WiMax technology becomes useful when it is bundled with IPTV The wireless bandwidth will be roughly 3Mbps/1.5Mbps; but this is nowhere near the +100Mbps/50Mbps that LTE promises

How does 4G work?

4G is the fourth generation of mobile network technology and 5G's predecessor. A 4G connection works via an antenna that transmits over radio frequencies, which lets mobile devices connect to mobile networks.

In the 2010s, 4G reigned as the latest, most innovative generation of cellular technology and reached ubiquity within the decade. Some of 4G's promises included enhanced cell density, improved VoIP capabilities and greater bandwidth.

4G Long Term Evolution ( LTE ) is the golden, global standard for wireless broadband and sets the foundation for 5G networks. Both 4G and 4G LTE support various traffic types, something previous generations struggled to do and which 5G must now improve upon.

How does 5G work?

5G comes with various new features and capabilities, including network slicing, orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing ( OFDM ) and massive multiple input, multiple output.

5G also introduces another new standard called 5G New Radio ( 5G NR ) that aims to replace LTE. 5G NR builds off LTE's best capabilities and brings new benefits, such as increased energy savings for connected devices and enhanced connectivity.

5G can also operate on a new high-frequency spectrum -- millimeter wave ( mmWave ) -- which operates on wavelengths between 30 GHz and 300 GHz, compared to 4G LTE's wavelengths of under 6 GHz. Due to the mmWave spectrum, 5G requires new small cell base stations to operate and function.

The biggest difference between 4G and 5G is latency. 5G can offer low latency under 5 milliseconds, while 4G latency ranges from 60 ms to 98 ms. Lower latency brings advancements in other areas, such as faster download speeds.

While 4G introduced various VoIP capabilities, 5G builds upon and enhances those promises of quick potential download speeds. 4G's download speeds hit 1 Gbps, and 5G's goal is to increase that tenfold for maximum download speeds of 10 Gbps.

Base stations

Another key difference between 4G and 5G is the base station required to transmit signals. Like its predecessors, 4G transmits signals from cell towers. However, 5G uses small cell technology , due to its faster speeds and mmWave frequency bands, so carriers are deploying high-band 5G in small cells about the size of pizza boxes in multiple locations. 5G still uses cell towers for its lower-frequency spectrums as well.

Carriers must deploy small cells in various areas due to the mmWave frequency. While the frequency is higher than cellular technology has seen so far, mmWave has weaker signals that travel across shorter distances. Small cell stations must be placed frequently in 5G-capable areas to ensure the signals reach users and businesses.

OFDM encoding

OFDM splits different wireless signals into separate channels to avoid interference, which also provides greater bandwidth. Because OFDM encodes data on different frequencies, this can bolster 4G and 5G download speeds, as these networks would have their own signal channels rather than a shared one between them. 4G uses up to 20 MHz channels, while 5G uses 100 MHz to 800 MHz channels.

Cell density

Small cell technology enables 5G to provide more cell density and enhance network capacity. While these were also promises of 4G, 5G will likely succeed where its predecessor falls short, as 4G never completely met its high goals for general speeds. 5G networks have increased density, which means they have more capacity to support more users and connected devices, leading to increased mobile device and connection capacity.

Despite the advancements of 5G, some of its expectations have fallen short . Carriers are taking time to work out the flaws and complexity 5G creates.

5G expectations vs. reality

Early technological promises aren't always guaranteed. Organizations that want to evaluate differences between 4G and 5G for their network architecture should take a step back and look at what 4G promised, what 4G actually delivers and what that could mean for 5G's reality. Caution is key because goals don't always materialize in the real world.

For example, one goal of 4G was to reach general speeds from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps. In reality, these speeds averaged 7 Mbps to 43 Mbps. This doesn't mean 4G is bad or that the original goals weren't possible. Instead, these goals set the groundwork for what 5G should and could achieve. 5G's download speeds and low-latency goals, for example, are an extension of 4G's original goals.

However, 5G hasn't accomplished all its goals in the first few years. These achievements could take years or might not happen at all. It's crucial for organizations and network teams to understand that the expectations and realities of 4G and 5G are mutually exclusive. Despite this, 5G has the potential to enhance operations and address the shortcomings that 4G failed to address. How 5G does this in a long-term, global way has yet to be seen.

Since 2019, U.S. mobile carriers have allocated tremendous resources to enable 5G coverage nationwide. Over the past few years alone, more than $100 billion has been invested in securing additional midband spectrum—including C-Band, 2.5GHz and CBRS—which can be highly effective in unlocking the full power of 5G including speed, capacity and latency.

Additionally, there has been a concerted push to deliver 5G across the U.S. on all spectrums. Prior to 2023, almost $50 billion was invested annually by carriers to build and operate their next-generation mobile network. We’ve seen a slight dip this year; however, the push for densification is coming, especially on C-Band. Meanwhile, the carriers globally continue to invest in 4G LTE and 5G infrastructure to bring more capacity and coverage to their networks.

How We Got Here

Sometimes, it’s good to look in the rearview mirror and comprehend how we got here. In the mobile world, every decade has seen the introduction of a new generation of mobile technology—a new “G.” Each new “G” has introduced unique features and capabilities that have changed how we interact.

While a variant of the second generation, or 2.5G, was the initial foray into the world of mobile data, the underlying technologies adopted by U.S. carriers were drastically different. At that time, Verizon and Sprint both had CDMA networks , which had their roots in the U.S. and Japan. Simultaneously, AT&T was offering its wireless service on GSM technology, which was predominantly used in Europe. Data speed was measured in Kbps instead of Gbps, as it is today. Packetized data ushered in a new age of communications and provided the foundation for today’s era of digital connectivity.

When the third generation was introduced, it was the first true “data” oriented network, with Mbps of data speed being supported. However, 3G was constrained by divergent underlying technologies and standards. A significant milestone, though, was the successful introduction of Apple’s iPhone, which redefined how people began to use their smart devices.

Fast forward to the fourth generation of mobile technology, introduced with one important caveat: The underlying technology was unified to what is commonly referred to as “LTE”—or 4G long term evolution. Greenfield infrastructure supporting this standard had to be deployed by all carriers worldwide to deliver their 4G services, which now offered download speeds in Gbps and largely enhanced connectivity. There was a significant difference in this fourth “G,” as it was developed to become the ultimate bedrock of mobile communications.

The transition to the highly anticipated fifth generation changed our connected experience altogether. It was a unique case of reality meeting the hype. Today, high-bandwidth video communication is becoming ubiquitous, and a multitude of concurrent devices can now be interconnected on the new 5G network, leading to our new world of IoT (Internet of Things).

Despite these benefits, 4G LTE remains the bedrock of mobile connectivity, meaning it must now coexist with 5G. Ericsson’s Mobility Report estimates that by the end of 2023, there will be about 1.5 billion 5G subscriptions. Projections show 5 billion global 5G connections by the end of 2028, accounting for almost 55% of all mobile subscriptions. The remaining 45%, accounting for 3 billion to 4 billion subscribers and a larger proportion of devices, are expected to remain connected via 4G LTE for the foreseeable future.

Moving Forward

With spectrum remaining finite and expensive, while being the only highway mobile services are delivered on, carriers must always overlay newer technologies effectively while continually maximizing the use of their spectrum.

However, one of the requirements of 5G is the need for larger chunks of contiguous spectrum, which is typically unavailable to carriers in their prior allocation of lower frequency bands. Backward compatibility of 5G to 4G LTE holds the key for carriers, as they can keep our devices connected on 4G in areas where 5G is not available. Delivering a ubiquitous connected experience for users is a major endeavor for carriers, and all efforts will need to be made to make 4G LTE available as a complement to 5G.

Typically, it takes about a decade for carriers to deliver nationwide coverage on any G, and in mid-2022, U.S. carriers are reported to have achieved 99% 4G LTE uptime for their subscribers in many markets. In comparison, the uptime was at roughly 85% in 2015. Massive investments have been made in the 4G LTE network, and we are now in the critical phase of needing to maximize and extend the life of this bedrock network with selective additional investments. The focus for the network investment is shifting from coverage to enhanced capacity.

Different solutions help address the needs of carriers to maximize the use of their spectrum while increasing capacity in the network. From a last mile connection perspective, carriers have options to enable mobile broadband, fixed wireless and fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) connectivity. In the case of mobile broadband and fixed wireless, the carriers need to leverage a robust mobile network that can guarantee high performance in an economically viable deployment scenario where the spectrum utilization is correspondingly maximized. For FTTP, carriers do not need to leverage their spectrum but the cost of deployment and, in many cases, the difficulty in bring fiber to every premise outweighs the benefits.

In an outdoor network where mobile last-mile connectivity is being delivered by the carrier, they look for high gain, clean signals and better coverage area with no interference. In the indoor scenario, especially in high profile venues like stadiums and arenas, the carriers are additionally looking for high sectorization to maximize use of their spectrum and to deliver high-capacity connectivity to their subscribers. The choice of antennas becomes imperative, and carriers have a few to choose from including the traditional panel antennas with known constraints, and the new lens antennas. Ultimately, the choice of the antennas to deliver the last-mile connectivity can be the game-changer for the carriers as they strive to deliver advanced mobile broadband and fixed wireless connectivity.
