Glam new Scottish hotel’s divisive look has earned it a rude nickname

Talking point … the new W Edinburgh has been likened to a British sweet and has also prompted some ruder visual comparisons.

Boasting a braw (fine) central location, this hotel is a beacon of the new St James Quarter, a $2 billion retail and leisure district anchored around a glossy mall that has replaced a brutalist shopping arcade and offices. It’s just five minutes on foot from both Waverley, Edinburgh’s main station (which has rail links across Britain), and St Andrew Square for trams to and from the airport.

W Edinburgh’s swirling bronze ribbon design is completely unique.

Rest assured, you’ll have nae bother (no worries) locating W Edinburgh. Looking like nothing else in the city, the hotel’s landmark 12-storey “Ribbon” building has a swirling bronze-hued steel exterior, its curling top already earning it several nicknames, from the “Walnut Whip” (after the popular British confectionary) to other, let’s say, ruder ones. Also comprising a neighbouring restored Georgian block and a stone new-build, W Edinburgh has the uniform slickness and multinational staff you’d expect from a luxe Marriott hotel with some distinctive Scottish touches (and accents). Tartan is a regular feature, notably in the lobby’s deconstructed tapestry. Unicorns, Scotland’s national animal, appear as faux hunting trophies by the elevators, while the spa offers treatments with Hebridean seaweed.

The Extreme WOW suite.

There are 244 rooms and suites, from 23-square-metre retreats with views of Edinburgh Castle to the 149-square-metre “Extreme WOW Suite”, which has a round bed, private sauna and sweeping skyline vistas. That’s in the “Ribbon”, where most options have a balcony or terrace, including my 27-square-metre “Fabulous King”.

Its standout feature is the rocky mini-bar table, carved to evoke the extinct volcanic crags of Edinburgh (and topped with complimentary bottled Gaelic-themed cocktails).

Meanwhile, the furry copper cushions on the curvaceous sofa remind me of highland cows. Away from the living/sleeping area, there’s a separate toilet and walk-in shower with citrusy Momo gels. All rooms have buttons to control mood lighting, wardrobes with 100 per cent cotton robes and coffee machines.

Food + drink

Eye-catching … the entrance to SushiSamba.

There’s a handful of choices high up the “Ribbon” that let you savour Edinburgh as you tuck in. On the 10th floor, SushiSamba offers Peruvian-Japanese-Brazilian fusion cuisine for lunch and dinner, and also serves an excellent breakfast (perhaps you’ll fancy a “full Scottish” with haggis or a rabanada – a south American twist on French toast). On the next level up, the W Lounge has all-day dining with an onus on modern Scottish fare, and Joao’s Place is an intimate bar that stays open until 3am (Wed-Sun) with Sao Paulo-inspired cocktails, bossa nova vinyls and a terrace with firepits. You can also imbibe on the rooftop, which has all-weather igloos and incredible 360-degree views, with Edinburgh’s rugged peaks, castle, spires, domes and seaside jockeying for your camera’s attention.

Out + about

A prime location for exploring the UNESCO-listed Old and New Towns.

The sights and festival venues of the UNESCO-listed Old and New Towns are a stroll from the hotel. So is Leith Walk, a cosmopolitan tram-lined strip that slopes almost two kilometres down to Edinburgh’s gentrified port enclave. To appreciate why the “Ribbon” is a controversial addition to the Scottish capital’s skyline, scale nearby Calton Hill, a panoramic vantage point dotted with neoclassical monuments.

The verdict

Cosy Joao’s Place stays open until 3am (Wed-Sun).

Its architecture may not be universally adored locally, but W Edinburgh certainly elevates the city’s high-end accommodation scene. And those rooftop views? Wow.

Our rating out of five

If you’re a musician, you’ll love the hotel’s instrument-laden recording studio. For everyone else, the rooftop rocks. Do a complete circuit and you’ll be in no doubt this is Britain’s most bonnie (beautiful) city. You might get lucky with a blazing sunset.

A small thing, perhaps, but a little too much keycard tapping. You must tap in the lift to go upstairs, then again for the corridors, and finally to enter your room.

Classical music is an intense environment — and one that makes for a rich cinematic setting . In the past few years alone, best picture lineups have featured movies that take place in this world, including Maestro and Tár . Measures for a Funeral explores some of these same themes — of sacrifice and devotion for the sake of art and the precision and passion required to be great in this high-pressure field — from a unique point of view, told not directly from the perspective of a conductor-composer but rather a thesis student who’s infatuated by one .

What Is 'Measures for a Funeral' About?

Sofia Bohdanowicz ’s film finds its protagonist in the form of Audrey Benac ( Deragh Campbell ), an academic who comes from a family of musicians. Her absent father was a highly accomplished fiddler, while her mother was a less successful violinist, constantly telling Audrey that giving birth to her ruined her career. Their relationship is, predictably, complicated because of that, and the film sees Audrey running from her mom despite the fact she is in hospice and doesn’t have much time left .

But while Audrey is running away from her mother, she is running toward another woman: 20th-century violinist Kathleen Parlow (voiced by Mary Margaret O’Hara ), who has been all but forgotten by time. She has a personal connection to this woman, as she served as her grandfather’s violin teacher, but even so, her interest in her borders on obsession — paralleling, in a way, Parlow’s own endlessly devoted relationship to music and music alone. Audrey travels from Toronto to London to Oslo to discover everything she can about her, reading her diaries, visiting her home, and even attempting to get an orchestra to stage concerto Opus 28, which was dedicated to Kathleen but thought to be burned out of existence decades ago after a poor reception, in order to hear her and gain a twisted kind of closure.

'Measures for a Funeral' Is a Visual and Musical Treat

Measures for a Funeral is predictably strong in the music department , the score infusing the film with a moody, ominous tone from the get-go. Extensive repetitive notes heighten the sense of tension and bring out the horror vibe lurking under the surface of the drama that’s constantly threatening to break free.

Visually, the film is stunning, too. The cinematography is crisp and consistent, defined by clean lines and symmetry that feels fitting for the formal and often stuffy setting it’s capturing. The color palette — somehow simultaneously cozy and disconcerting, vivid but dreary — enhances things as well. Some of the most intriguing shots give us insight into Audrey’s unwell state of mind, like when she mistakes a coffee spill for a pool of blood. On a craft level, Measures for a Funeral is remarkable . The entire film is a concert of sorts, and each shot is like looking at a breathtaking painting.

'Measures for a Funeral's Distance Makes It Difficult to Connect To

Unfortunately, the intentionally cold presentation makes it difficult to connect to Audrey . And while that’s the point — Audrey, after all, struggles to connect with the world around her, her emotions, and even her sense of self — the film can’t seem to overcome that hurdle and make us care about her another way. She’s not particularly likable or unlikable , sympathetic or unsympathetic. She’s just not that interesting at all. Campbell doesn’t give a bad performance, but the nature of the part demands that she stay an expressionless blank slate pretty much the whole time. Don’t kill me for the comparison, but it reminds me of Kristen Stewart in Twilight — they’re embodying the role well; it’s just a shame that the role itself reads bland onscreen.

That the film sits at nearly two-and-a-half hours doesn’t help matters. There’s nothing wrong with a long movie if it earns it , but Measures for a Funeral doesn’t really get started until about 70 minutes in , once Audrey becomes determined to stage the opus. The first hour plays out like a dry documentary with drawn-out, redundant monologues from Parlow’s letters and characters infodumping what they know about the woman to each other. At one point, we see an archivist teach Audrey about the history of sounds — something that’s fascinating in theory but plays out like a dull humanities lecture. At times, the film plays less like a feature and more like an audiobook of a biography about Parlow’s life, with a few visuals thrown in for good measure.

The characters never feel like real people, and that’s especially true with the dialogue, which is somehow overly pretentious and sophomorically direct. The characters often speak as they would in a Yorgos Lanthimos film but without the absurd creativity or wicked humor to make it effective. Themes of what it takes to be a genius — and society’s tendency to revere men who dominate their craft while disposing of women who excel — are timeless, but Measures for a Funeral ’s discussions of this are frequently grating and eye-roll-inducing. The film takes itself too seriously and has an inflated sense of self-importance that’s off-putting and rings false.

It’s especially frustrating considering there is a compelling movie hiding in here if it would just allow itself to let loose by leaning into the psychological thriller elements it teases throughout but never fully commits to or cuts back on the overindulgent details that keep the pace at an agonizing crawl. Measures for a Funeral is brimming with style and painstakingly researched, but the fact Bohdanowicz seems to insist on showcasing every tiny detail she discovered at the sacrifice of making a leaner, more focused, and riveting story causes a dissonance that makes it feel dead on arrival.

While 'Measures for a Funeral' is a technical feat, its plot and characters leave much to be desired.

• The score is gorgeous, immersing us in the world of classical music in which the film takes place.
• The cinematography is stunning, enhancing the film's stiff and uneasy tone.
• The distance put between us and the protagonist makes it difficult to connect with and invest in her story.
• The film doesn't earn its runtime, indulging in too many unnecessary details and moving at a sluggish pace.
• The dialogue is overly dry and pretentious, with the characters never feeling like real people.

Intro to Film 2024

I have not watched any films made by Wes Anderson, so I don’t know if it’s his style of making movie or it’s just in The Grand Budapest Hotel. The movie really gave me a sense of a theatre like production on stage: the acting from every character and especially the non-diegetic sound which really helps with building up the tension of the plot and just the audience more focused with what the characters are doing. I really wanted to emphasize on the music, it is really an important part of the film and the choices and timing of it are both really great. Just a few key scenes to point out: when all the people are waiting for Kovacs to announce the death will of Madame D, when Gustav and Zero is chasing Jopling in the snow skiing, when Gustav and the other are breaking out of the prison, when Dimitri is chasing Agatha with the painting almost at the end, just to name a few. The movie started with a drastic setting, both location and time changes, to build up the initial story telling. From mostly modern time with a statue of the author, to the author in his old age speaking, to the out-dated age of the Grand Budapest hotel, and finally when the story really happened in 1932. Much of the story telling made in the film is from the narrator’s perspective, either from the writer or the old Zero. The two of them are having a meal together when old Zero told the writer most of the history of how he got the hotel. I think the purpose of it is to make the audience and the writer in the same shoes, listening to the story together. The outside narrative also made it easier for the director to convey a lot of the information and how characters feel in an easier way. In terms Mise-en-scene, color is the most important element that stand out to me. In different locations, the hotel, Madame D’s place, the prison, every place has different themes of color. Especially in the hotel, everyone has many colorful clothings and warm lighting, all the aesthetic designs and choices, that are high contrast with the cold weather outside . Another point of contrast is when they three of them are on the train the second time as Gustav got killed by the soldiers, the entire scene was in black and white. I do believe that is something Wes Anderson wanted to convey and hint to the theme of the movie about civilization , it is ended as Gustav died. And this is the area where I wanted to get more clear about, the deeper meaning behind character’s action, what they symbolizes of civilization and war, and the relationship between Gustav and Zero.
