Stream It Or Skip It: ‘French Girl’ on Amazon Prime Video, an Acceptably Middling Zach Braff Rom-Com

Stream it or skip it: ‘the animal kingdom’ on hulu, a bizarre french fable about human-animal hybrids, 'last summer' director catherine breillat doesn't see the need for intimacy coordinators on her sets: "they have no science behind what they’re doing", 'under paris' finally puts netflix in the shark movie business.

This week on BOATS ( Based On A True Story ) Theatre is No Limit (now on Netflix), a French drama “inspired by” the life of Audrey Mestre, a record-setting freediver who – well, the events of her life are widely known but not that widely known, so we’ll save that for the movie. What you need to know going into it: freedivers compete to see who can hold their breath and go the deepest into the ocean. No scuba gear, just your lungs. Specifically, no-limit diving sees the diver holding onto a weighted sled attached to a line and plunging to a specified depth – well beyond 500 feet, if you’re going for the record – then using a propulsion tank to jet them back to the surface. It puts a lot of pressure on your physical and mental faculties, and makes for some reasonably intriguing drama, as we learn in this movie.

NO LIMIT : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: Roxana (Camille Rowe) learned to freedive from her grandfather. She’s a youngster when we meet her; she dives beneath the surface; hey, look, a sea turtle; and suddenly, she’s an adult. She sits in the lecture hall, listening to her prof bloviate in uberdramatic tones about the creatures that live in the deepest darkest deeps of the ocean, where the pressure is so intense, it’ll crush your lungs and you die immediately, that’s our time for today, have a nice week! Roxana spies a flier for a freediving course taught by record-setting diver Pascal Gauthier (Sofiane Zermani), gets in an argument with her mother (Roxana’s been skipping therapy), and trucks to the beach for the course.

She meets one of the instructors, Tom (Cesar Domboy), who’s a nice guy, and there’s a bit of a spark between them. On the boat, Pascal makes quite the shirtless entrance – no lack of confidence there, on any front. Tom invites Roxana to dinner with Pascal and the crew, and Pascal sits across the table and bores holes in her with his stare and gives off the type of skeezy vibe that makes you wonder if we should chum his underpants and find the nearest shark frenzy. She goes to the ladies’ room and he follows her in and hey now how about that, a few minutes later, the woman he came to the party with storms off in a huff.

Pascal invites Roxana to come with the team for their next excursion, and leaves it to his grizzled coach Stephane (Laurent Fernandez) to tell her that Pascal is training for a world-record 172-meter dive today. No biggie! He pulls it off, but tragedy strikes one of his safety divers doesn’t surface. They pull the guy out and Roxane performs CPR but it’s too late. Which means there’s a job opening on the team, and Roxana is in, despite her inexperience. She’s gone diving with Pascal, see, and he knows she’s gifted – she can hold her breath and remain calm and understands the economy of movement necessary to be a great freediver.

It doesn’t take long for Roxana to quit college and go on the road throughout Europe with Pascal for competitions, first as part of the team, and then to compete herself. Pascal seems a little jealous, and then seems even more jealous when he starts blacking out during dives and can no longer compete. He shifts to coaching Roxane, who rockets to freediving notoriety. She breaks a record for a swim-fin dive. She’s called a sex symbol. She’s in the throes of ecstasy with Pascal one night when he puts his hand around her throat and squeezes a little. She’s not into it. Maybe it’s not too late to procure some chum and a boat ride.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: Shuffle the scripts for Into the Blue , The Big Blue , Enough and – I dunno, what’s a movie about an obscure sport? Balls of Fury ? Dodgeball ? Yeah, Dodgeball – Dodgeball , and you’ll get a rough approximation of No Limit .

Performance Worth Watching: Rowe gives an empathetic performance as Roxana, despite the screenplay giving her little more than a wisp of a character to work with.

Memorable Dialogue: Stephane boosts Roxane’s confidence: “Roxy. You don’t need him. You don’t need anybody.”

Sex and Skin: A few medium-hard-R-rated sex scenes, each more steamy and graphic than before.

Our Take: No Limit mirrors some of the broad strokes of Mestre’s life, which had its share of – how do I say this without spoiling anything – ambiguities . Those ambiguities draw fascination to a movie that’s otherwise tedious, maudlin in tone and populated by flimsy characters. There’s little sense of Roxana’s passion for the sport, her ambition or her love for Pascal, who projects his true, ugly, megalomaniac self up there for everyone to see like Bat-Signal. Our two leads each get one confessional monologue, and multiple scenes in which they plunge into the ocean’s inky blackness – so many, including multiple dream sequences, that their repetition becomes wearisome, and almost comical.

That isn’t to say such imagery isn’t poetic. The muffled stillness and vast, open spaces can inspire awe, wonder, fear and introspection. But writer-director David M. Rosenthal’s proclivity for dramatic underwater photography and semi-torrid sex scenes can’t compensate for the movie’s languid pace and dramatic impotence. It often looks beautiful, but is a long, slow descent into mostly empty waters.

Will you stream or skip the French freediving drama #NoLimit on @netflix ? #SIOSI — Decider (@decider) September 15, 2022

Our Call: SKIP IT. No Limit exists in a nowhere-zone between sports drama and doomed romance.

What's the Story?

NO LIMIT is the story, based on real events, of how a diving class changes the life of college student Roxana (Camille Rowe) forever. Ever since she was a little girl, Roxana has loved diving in the ocean with only a mask and fins, enjoying the peaceful quiet of the underwater world. When she decides to take the diving class, she meets the instructor, renowned diver Pascal (Sofiane Zermani), and the two quickly fall for each other. As their relationship becomes more intense, Roxana starts to equal, and even eclipse, some of Pascal's accomplishments. And it's starting to look like he's not the type who's happy resting on his laurels.

Is It Any Good?

This is an intense, dark drama that's as much, if not more, about the imbalance of power in mentor/mentee relationships, especially when they become romantic, as it is about no-limit diving. The two leading actors in No Limit have a lot of screen magnetism, and the entire cast turn in very good performances. The direction takes viewers through the story as it unfolds, without spoon-feeding answers, which keeps up the tension and suspense.

The underwater photography is fantastic. It's easy to see and follow the action when no one can speak, even in the black depths of the ocean. A brief pairing of sex and violence make it best for oldest teens and up who can handle the intensity.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the sexual content in No Limit, especially when it's paired with violence. Is it too much? Does it advance the story, or is it just there to entertain?

Is the depiction of drinking and smoking excessive? Is it glamorized, or realistic? Does that make a difference? Why?

Had you ever heard of no-limit diving before you saw this movie? What did you learn about it? What do you think of it as a sport?

Is ‘No Limit’ a true story? The tragic death behind the film

  • by Lilyanne Rice
  •  – on Sep 12, 2022
  •  in Netflix

No Limit  is a French film streaming on Netflix that tells a dramatic story about love, ambition, jealousy, and death. It focuses on Roxana Aubrey, a student who leaves Paris to chase her dream of becoming a professional freediver. In the south of France, Roxana falls for Pascal Gaulthier, her instructor and a world champion freediver.

Under Pascal’s guidance, Roxana becomes a world-class freediver, breaking record after record. After it becomes painfully clear to Pascal that the student has usurped the master, he develops a negative attitude towards Roxana’s achievements. His jealousy and wickedness ultimately lead to her death.

No Limit  is based on the life and death of French freediver Audrey Mestre

Pipin Ferreras and Audrey Mestre

David M. Rosenthal,  No Limit ’s writer and director, based the film on Audrey Mestre’s life and death . Audrey was a French woman who lost her life during an attempt to break the freediving record.

Mestre was an underwater sports pro when she met freediving champion Francisco ‘Pipin’ Ferreras. Francisco put her under his wing, training her to master the art of no-limit freediving. The pair also started dating and were married in 1999 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Audrey progressed rapidly in the sport, breaking the freediving record in 1999 and 2000. In August 2002, Tanya Streeter set the world record for freediving by diving 160 meters.

Two months later, Audrey and Pipin traveled to the Dominican Republic, where Audrey hoped to dive to 171 meters. Her practice attempts went well as she often came close to her target.

On the day of the official attempt, the weather wasn’t conducive, but it wasn’t bad enough to force a postponement. After taking a deep breath, Audrey plunged into the deep and reached 171 meters. Unfortunately, the system designed to facilitate her rapid return to the surface failed.

Furthermore, the strong current and improperly set up vertical riser rope slowed her rise to the surface. By the time a rescue diver and Pipin took her out of the water, Audrey had spent nearly nine minutes in the water, more than double the time required for the dive.

Audrey reportedly had a pulse, but without medical personnel at the dive point or on the shore, there was no chance of reviving her.

The event received intense backlash because the organizers didn’t follow standard safety measures. An investigation into Mestre’s death found that it was unforeseeable, and multiple factors had contributed to Audrey’s death.

The investigation found no one culpable in her death, though some observers claim Pipin killed Audrey.

No Limit ending explained: what happened to Roxana?

Warning! Contains spoilers for No Limit! Here's what happened at the end of No Limit...

Camille Rowe as Roxana and Sofiane Zermani as Pascal

Warning! Contains spoilers for  No Limit!

No Limit follows the passionate, yet toxic relationship of world champion freediver Pascal (Sofiane Zermani) and his student Roxana (Camille Rowe), who leaves college to take on a freediving course in the South of France.

The pair embark in a love affair where Roxana finds herself diving into dangerous depths in the sport, as well as navigating her intense relationship with the competitive Pascal.

No Limit is loosely based a true story and despite Pascal and Roxana's steamy romance, their love story results in a tragic end.

So what happened at the end of  No Limit?  What happened to Roxana? Here is everything you need to know...

  • No Limit cast

Camille Rowe as Roxana

As Pascal and Roxana embark on their passionate romance while competing in the dangerous sport of freediving, Roxana begins second guessing the relationship when Pascal's controlling side begins to rear its ugly head.

She soon discovers that he has been cheating on her, but his guilt tripping makes her stay in the toxic relationship.

Roxana finds herself becoming a popular athlete in the freediving world, but Pascal, who was forced to take a step back from diving due to a medical condition, is jealous of anyone who can beat the world record which he has failed to do.

Despite his intense feelings of jealousy he becomes Roxana's freediving instructor,  and constantly pushes Roxana to dangerous limits to compete in the No Limit category and create a new world record of 180 metres.

When the day of the competition arrives, Tom (César Domboy), a safety diver who Roxana had a fling with, is checking her diving equipment to make sure it's working properly.

Camille Rowe as Roxana and Sofiane Zermani as Pascal

Tom later sees Pascal secretly handling the equipment and reassures him that it's already been checked.

As Roxana makes the daring attempt to break the record, she dives to the bottom of the ocean but finds that the air tank lift bag has failed and cannot inflate to bring her up to the surface.

Tom panics and manages to fix the equipment, however, she is unable to reach the surface in time and drowns.

The final scene sees Roxana's grandfather sobbing in a boat as he spreads Roxana's ashes into the sea.

Did Pascal kill Roxana?

It is heavily implied that Pascal intercepted the equipment so that Roxana couldn't break the world record, which resulted in her drowning.

When both Tom and Pascal were interviewed by the police about her death, no details were revealed about the tragedy, even though Tom saw Pascal messing with the equipment right before Roxana's dive.

As a heartbroken Tom arrives at the airport, Pascal stares at him as he smokes a cigarette, a look of knowing on his face.

Although it's not actually said, but by the look on Pascal's face we can guess that Pascal caused the accident that killed Roxana.

Pascal's jealousy got the better of him and he wanted to make sure that both the love of his life and his biggest competitor couldn't beat him. This also meant that she couldn't leave him for Tom after he clocked on to their affair.

No Limit [2022] Netflix Review: A Visually Arresting Sports Drama That Dives Into Obsession, Jealousy & Toxic Relationships

No Limit is a sexually charged, suspenseful romantic drama about unhealthy competition and obsession with winning in an extremely high-risk sport. It also deals with the dark side of toxic love and dangerous relationships that dives into jealousy, controlling behaviors, and abusive and manipulative tactics. Starring Camille Rowe, Sofiane Zermani, and Cesar Domboy in the lead roles, this visually striking film examines the power dynamics existing in asymmetrical relationships, hypermasculinity, self-destruction, and co-dependency.

No Limit 2022

A womanizer at heart, Pascal does not even find his girlfriend as a deterrent before he engages in fiery sex with Roxana. After his girlfriend breaks up with him, Pascal and Roxana fall in love as they both share a passion for freediving. She becomes part of the diving team having the best time of her life. For Roxana, the quiet tranquillity she experiences underwater lets her forget the trauma of losing her father, who took his own life. For Pascal, diving is a means by which he can succeed in life and escape the memories of his tough childhood and dysfunctional family.

It is ironic to tout this as a romance, as it is anything but a love story despite the abundance of steamy and erotic scenes. No Limit is an unflinching exploration of misguided love and toxic relationship characterized by insecurity, self-centeredness, dominance, and jealousy. Pascal’s character is a star athlete with more than 25 world records. He is hypermasculinity personified, a megalomaniac and misogynist who becomes obsessed with the spotlight and success. He emotionally manipulates Roxana to be with him and controls her in and outside the bedroom.

The most striking element of this mildly interesting narrative is its stunning cinematography, especially underwater diving shots. Thomas Hardmeier strikes a stunning balance of light and color to capture the visually resplendent images of the infinite expanse of the deep waters. It is fascinating to see the bodies diving into the water, the bubbles rising to the surface and the ray of sunlight penetrating the surface and slowly fading into the depths of the sea. Though it is instructional, the film allocates a lot of time to explain the pitfalls of this risky sport, the physiological requirements for safe diving, and the precautions to be taken by the team before diving. Some of the scenes tend to become repetitive, thus clocking the duration at one hour and fifty-eight minutes.

Irrespective of its interesting backdrop and visually striking imagery, the film is underwhelming as it takes its sweet time to show its exposition and rising action. The flat characters and slow showcasing of subtle character development refuse to provide an intense and palpable narrative. Though Roxana and Pascal have their own tragic and troubled past, we find it difficult to connect with their emotions from time to time. The performance of the lead characters is decent in this sexually driven film that portrays the power dynamics of opposing personalities. The balanced alternation between above and below the surface contrast the intricacies of the life above the surface and the peaceful nature of diving underwater.

No Limit ending explained – what’s the key message?

no-limit-ending-explained-netflix-film

This article discusses the ending of the Netflix film No Limit and will contain spoilers.

READ: Everything We Know About No Limit.

No Limit starts with somber music and a young girl standing looking out into the open ocean alone on a beach. The girl is greeted by an old man (who we learn is her grandfather) who hands her diving gear and she begins to swim in the crystal clear waters.

We’re given shots of the girl swimming alone in the ocean, then she rises out of the water slightly older, showing us that she’s been swimming/diving all her life.

Roxy, whilst she is a strong female lead and is constantly improving and developing, is still defined by the men around her. Her grandfather, her lover, her friends, her team, even when she states she’s taking on the dangerous No Limit dive for her, it’s only because she’s been orchestrated and manipulated into it, proving herself to everyone around her.

Roxy denies the wishes of her mother, and Roxy’s attempt at suicide was inspired and promoted because her father also committed suicide. She denies being a sex symbol, but it’s suggested she’s only in the position she is because she slept her way there. This film is very sexually driven, so she is defined by her body and how she’s using it, both in and out of the ocean.

Pascal’s character is dark, devious, and very hyper-masculine. He’s a leader, he’s sexy, and is a driving force for Roxy. From the beginning of their relationship we know he’s a cheater, a liar, and gets away with everything because he is the star athlete. As he develops Roxy he sees her as competition, not only that he sees her as his possession.

Towards the end of the film, Roxy follows Pascal and catches him cheating on her, which then causes Roxy to go and cheat on Pascal with Tom, making them as bad as each other, still flawed, still fighting their instincts and demons. Pascal being the know-it-all he is finds out, and he’s not going to let this go unpunished.

Netflix film No Limit ending explained

Stakes are high for Roxy as she’s going to attempt a new world record for 173 meters. Pascal goes to do a final check on her equipment after Tom and Stephan have already done so. Before Roxy goes under he gives her one kiss — is this the kiss of death, or a romantic good luck gesture?

As Roxy is sinking further and further into the dark, lonely waters, she looks uncomfortable. As she tries to release to allow herself to come back up, it’s jammed. It’s a very gentle, calm scene of her slowly returning to the top, with soft piano music and whale song. Roxy slowly let’s go as she has run out of breath. On the surface, it’s been over seven minutes and everyone begins to panic to get her out of the water. They drag her out, but it’s too late. Pascal has conducted the perfect murder, one where he can place blame on someone else.

In the final scene we have an old man sitting in a boat, sobbing. We assume this is Roxy’s grandfather, as he takes the urn and sprinkles her ashes into the water. The shot is from under the water so we see her ashes slowly dance around in the currents, as the boat drives away.

The message I take away is a sad one — she was always better off alone, and with risk doesn’t always come reward. Freediving represents letting go of all frustrations and anger, getting to know yourself, and trusting your instincts, and I don’t think she really did. In the physical sense, she did, she was able to almost set a world record for the longest free dive, but personally, and mentally, I think her character couldn’t shake her demons which lead to her downfall.

The final shot is in loving memory of the real Audrey Mestre, 1974-2002.

‘No Limit’ Ending, Explained: Is It Based On A True Story? What Happened To Roxana?

No Limit Ending Explained Pascal and Roxana

“No Limit” is beautiful under water but shallow above it. The true story could have been a captivating watch, but it only got interesting in the last couple of minutes. The Roxana Aubrey character failed to leave an impact; she has a tragic past, yet we never get to know her in totality. The film is visually stunning, but it does not invoke the multitude of emotions that one can expect to go through while watching what led to the tragic death of freediver, Audrey Mestre.

Spoilers Ahead

Plot Summary: What Is The Film About?

As a little girl, Roxana used to go to the beach with her grandfather, who taught her to dive. The peace and tranquility that she experienced underwater were incomparable to worldly pleasures. She studied to be a marine biologist at college. One day, she noticed a poster of the world-famous freediver, Pascal Gautier, who would be giving diving lessons to those interested. Without giving it a second thought, Roxana paid the course fee and reached the location on time. She met Tom there, a diving instructor who worked with Pascal. The two shared unmissable chemistry on the first day of class, but the moment Roxana had set her eyes on Pascal, she knew whom she wanted. Pascal had an incredible pain tolerance capacity, which was why he could endure the pressure and dive deep into the water. His calmness and capability impressed Roxana, and she could not take her eyes off him during the dinner party after the practice session. Pascal was a womanizer. Even with his girlfriend by his side, he continued to flirt with Roxana. They passionately made out in the washroom, and upon returning, his girlfriend broke up with him.

Pascal taught Roxana the techniques to stay under water. Their shared passion for diving brought them closer to each other. Roxana felt at peace in Pascal’s presence, and she would not trade it for the world. She soon joined Pascal’s team in a practice session. On the first day itself, she understood how risky the profession was. While Pascal was aiming to set a world record by diving 172 meters underwater, his team was spread across several levels to monitor him. Even though Pascal managed to complete the dive safely, one of his team members lost his life. Stephane, a team member, blamed Pascal for sending the rookie 40 meters down. The team needed a new member, and Roxana stepped in to fill the position. Stephane was against it, knowing how risky it could be for her, but Pascal trusted Roxana’s capability. He believed she was a natural and could adapt easily. Roxana learned the safety protocol and was prepared to assist Pascal. On the day of the event, Pascal successfully dived 172 m, and the team celebrated the new world record. Roxana was on top of the world. She had never felt so alive. She informed her mother that she would leave her studies to accompany Pascal on his journey. Her mother was not supportive of her decision, but she refused to listen to her advice. A few days after setting a new world record, another freediver managed to go 174m down. Pascal had to compete now, and he was aiming for 176m. But this time, luck was not on his side. He suffered from a blackout, and the doctor advised him to stop diving. Pascal was not ready to give up, and Roxana could not change his mind, knowing how passionate he was about his profession. As he took a break, he introduced Roxana to the world of freediving. She soon set a new record for French women by going 56m deep in the CWF category. She was celebrated by the media for her achievement, and Pascal watched her from a distance. “No Limit” traces the relationship between Pascal and Roxana. A romance that soon turned bitter as a result of envy and distrust.

Who Was Responsible For Roxana’s Death?

Pascal could not accept defeat when a woman created another new world record. He was determined to dive 180m and create a new record, but his team and the organizers knew that he was not fit enough to do so. As Roxana rose to fame, Pascal could feel his importance fading away. Roxana looked up to him; he was her lover and her mentor, but he could not stand the celebration anymore. He was proud of Roxana but disappointed in himself. He went as far as to state that he would be happy to watch her set the new world record rather than allow any other person to do so. It was important for him to be involved either as a participant or as a coach.

Roxana could sense the growing distance between her and Pascal. He would often leave her at night, and she would be left alone. Roxana’s childhood was not easy. Her father committed suicide as a result of depression when she was 12. She always wondered why her father left her, and gradually she became obsessed with the idea of death. She attempted suicide, hoping to join her father, but her grandfather saved her life. We get a sense of how Roxana had been searching for the meaning of her existence, and it was only after meeting Pascal that she realized who she was meant to be. She emphasized how important Pascal was in her life and how the trophies and titles did not hold any value without him in her life. But he did not feel the same way. He was not ready to give up. For him, the competition mattered more than what he shared with Roxana. He decided Roxana would compete in the no-limit category even though his entire team thought it was a bad idea, but Roxana took up the challenge. As she trained to prove Pascal right, he cheated on her. Roxana soon found out about his affair, and she sought comfort in Tom.

The next morning, she decided to leave Pascal, but he was adamant about not letting her go. He smashed the mirror with his fist, and Roxana could not help but sympathize with him. Later, during their training session, Pascal read a text sent by Tom to Roxana and learned about their relationship. At a press conference, Roxana noticed the woman Pascal cheated with in the audience. By looking at him, she knew that he never mended his ways and left the conference abruptly. She kept to herself, and she could feel the loneliness creeping in again.

The next day, Roxana was set to compete in the No Limit category and go 180m deep to create a new world record. Pascal had a word with Tom and informed him that even though they had a few setbacks, he continued to count on him. Pascal went up to Roxana to spend a few minutes with her, but he realized that she no longer cared for him. Tom noticed Pascal checking the air tanks before the dive. A few seconds before Roxana dived in, Pascal planted a kiss on her lips. She dived in at 180m, but as she attempted to open the valve of the air tank to inflate the lift bag, she noticed that it was not working. The cylinder did not have air in it, making it impossible for her to rise rapidly to the surface. Even though Tom tried to fill the tank, it was not sufficient to pull her as rapidly. She was supposed to stay for three minutes under water, but she stayed there for over eight minutes. She realized it was a futile attempt to resurface; her body could not hold on any longer. She heard the whale sing and, in the serene depths, she lost her senses. By the time the security team dived in to save her, it was too late. She was declared dead upon reaching the surface. When the police interrogated the team, no one disclosed any knowledge of what went wrong. Though Tom knew that Pascal had a role to play in Roxana’s death, since he was the one last seen handling the air tank lift bag. As Tom was about to enter the airport, he noticed Pascal staring at him from a distance.

Pascal was involved in Roxana’s death. Perhaps he could not tolerate her indifference and wanted to seek revenge. He knew she could leave him, and he would no longer be responsible for her success. That might also be a reason for him to end her life. “No Limit” is dedicated to Audrey Mestre, who lost her life under similar circumstances.

Is It Based On A True Story?

“No Limits” is loosely based on the tragic death of Audrey Mestre, a promising freediver. The film maintains that it is a work of fiction and that not everything shown is based on reality. The death of Audrey Mestre was similar to that of Roxana, as shown in the film. Audrey was a gifted freediver who was trained by her husband, Francisco Ferreras, a popular figure in the diving world. It is said that on the day of Mestre’s final dive, Ferreras was responsible for the air tank lift bag. The dysfunction of it led to a series of controversies blaming Ferreras for her death. The freediving safety standards were not maintained, and the organization responsible for them was underfunded. There were two safety divers and no medical doctor to cater to Mestre when she was brought onshore. She had a pulse and could have been saved had there been a medical team available.

The gross negligence that led to her death resulted in mass outrage, though Mestre’s family chose not to probe into the case. Francisco Ferreras maintained his innocence. We will never get to know what happened on October 12, 2002. It might be a strained relationship coupled with the lack of a safety team that led to the loss of an extraordinary freediver. Audrey was supposedly reclusive before her final dive. The video of Audrey’s final dive that exists on the internet is chilling and heartbreaking. At the age of 28, Mestre was gone too soon.

“No Limit” is a 2022 Drama Thriller directed by David M. Rosenthal.

No Limit

No Limit (Sous Emprise) is a sports-drama-romance movie written and directed by David M. Rosenthal and stars Camille Rowe, Sofiane Zermani, and César Domboy, alongside other cast members. The movie has a runtime of 118 minutes and is loosely based on the life of French freediver Audrey Mestre.

Netflix describes the movie as:

An extraordinarily talented young woman finds deep, destructive love with her record-holding freediving instructor in this visually arresting romantic drama.

– No Limit Review Does Not Contain Spoilers –

If there’s anything scarier to me personally, it is diving into the unknown to the depths of the ocean without any air. Free diving is probably the scariest thing I can think of doing; thus, watching adults take this up as a sport and/or a hobby is personally triggering.

Personal anecdotes aside, it’s weirdly freeing watching No Limits , only if to see people overcome the thing that you are afraid of. Roxana, our protagonist, clearly has some mental health issues that are mentioned briefly just as the movie starts, and we jump straight into the water with her as we understand her connection with it.

No Limit

But, more than Roxana we have Pascal, her surprise boyfriend who is a free-diving star. After a quick romance and some fun sex, Pascal tries to do the impossible and break a shocking world record. At 175 metres, the risks are extreme, but that just makes this toxic love more interesting, isn’t it?

No Limit is a beautiful love letter to everyone who is thinking of getting into a toxic relationship after getting out of one. The film looks absolutely stunning, and you’ll be arrested as you watch these divers go down to the depths of the blue ocean.

It’ll scare you as well – as the lights dim, flicker and then disappear into the depths of the ocean, you’ll be left scared out of your mind. The relationship between Roxana and Pascal is just as problematic as you’d expect, which is what makes this such a passionate and arresting watch.

You see this like a car crash waiting to happen – both of our protagonists, battling their own issues and problems, try to tackle something that cannot end well for either of them. Towards the halfway point, you understand the dangerous effects that these two have on each other, and you just wait and watch to see the aftermath.

No Limit

I think No Limit went too deep, too fast, at least in the first half. We go too fast without knowing any of our protagonists too well. Their characters open up slowly later on, of course, but at first, we just jump into the introduction and the love story without much thought.

It’s interesting how the movie tries to portray Pascal as this broken man who simply wants to reclaim his life, but he’s just not a good person. He constantly tries to test the limits and throws a fit when he doesn’t get his way – the proof of an emotionally stunted man out to undo the past. It’s sorta sad but a whole lot of annoying watching him, which later on turns straight up dangerous.

On the other hand, we have Roxana, who has something to prove to herself and the world – to prove everyone wrong. She has issues as well and jumps into this relationship with stars in her eyes. As she finds her footing, you really root for her to get out of this madness.

In the end, it’s this silliness that takes you out of the movie. The question isn’t whether either of them will live to tell the tale of another dangerous dive. The question is whether they’ll be able to get out of this toxic relationship without losing their lives.

No Limit

I am glad that the movie doesn’t show this as a positive; it showcases this craziness with doom and foreboding. The relationship is as hopeless as diving, and sometimes you feel tired of watching this going on. You know this is bad news, she knows this is bad news, but she still lets this random guy run her life like it’s no one’s business. You want her to find her voice somewhere along this toxicity, but does she?

Camille Rowe spends a lot of her movies underwater, with 2021’s The Deep House being another movie shot underwater. That was an interesting watch, and she is just as good in her 2022 release as well. Sofiane Zermani is good as well, as he looks the part of the toxic playboy you shouldn’t be following to the depths of the water for.

Summing Up: No Limit

No Limit is the PSA to get out of the toxic relationship if you’re currently in one and reminds us not to follow our spouses’ dreams. The movie looks great, and you feel terribly for the protagonist as she tries to implode her life every step of the way.

No Limit is streaming on Netflix .

No Limit Review Netflix: This Tragic Tale Deserved a Better Presentation

After a break, I am back to reviewing films and shows again. There’s so much to be watched that I had to muse awhile to select my next film. No Limit is a French movie that began streaming on Netflix from 9th September, 2022.

It is a water sport-based film that takes inspiration from Audrey Mestre’s life, who died at the early age of 28. You can scroll down to the FAQs section of this blog to find out more about her.

An understated movie, No Limit promises to be steamy, intimate, and tragic. Does it deliver on these fronts? Well, you will find out in my No Limit movie review.

Table of Contents

No Limit Review Summary

Despite a strong backing of the story, No Limit cannot elevate the viewer’s experience due to poorly plotted emotional sequences. However, it has some positives.

No Limit Synopsis

Roxana falls for her world-record holder diving instructor and decides to drop out of college. Their affair comes with intimacy, romance, heartbreak, and destruction. Can she survive such mixed feelings? Or will Roxana meet a tragic fate?

movie review no limit

No Limit is a fictional film inspired by the life of Audrey Mestre.

Directed by David M. Rosenthal, No Limit stars Camille Rowe (Roxana), Sofiane Zermani (Pascal), Cesar Domboy (Tom), Laurent Fernandez, and Zacharie Chasseriaud, among others.

What Works for No Limit?

No Limit has a decent story to go with. Emotions and ominosity are the key factors in the film’s tale. Don’t expect intriguing features because it doesn’t aim to bring them in the first place. Since it is inspired by someone else’s life, these things would have made No Limit too superficial.

Moreover, the story is not excellent and watchable at the most.

Performances

Camille Rowe, as Roxana, is magnificent in No Limit. Her attitude changes with the story, resulting in a progressive emotional presence. Rowe’s expressions are loud yet subtle and how she breaks down during intense scenes is phenomenal. Playing the central character, Camille rises every time and ensures an eventful outing.

movie review no limit

Sofiane Zermani portrays Pascal in No Limit. There’s a shade of gray in his demeanor, and you would love how he comes across as a mixture of affability and hatred. The actor beautifully presents himself as someone who cannot be judged against his wishes. He is a record holder diver in No Limit. As for the character, Zermani carries a loud attitude till the end.

Cesar Domboy plays Tom and wins your heart. The character suits his mien as he charts an innocent path in this tragic tale. He never goes wrong in No Limit and distributes his acting prowess with conviction. You would be moved by his small yet significant role in this French film on Netflix.

What Doesn’t Work for No Limit?

Tragically infused ominous music cannot sustain a film for a long time. The content needs to connect with the viewer and leave a startling impact. No Limit has some grueling scenes, but it cannot stay upright consistently.

movie review no limit

As a viewer, you will always have time to check your phone and complete a couple of chores while watching No Limit. It doesn’t demand your attention either through scenes or dialogues. The plot is too straightforward and unexciting.

No Limit is a slow affair when it had all the chance to be pacy. Being a sports film, it should have gone bonkers over the idea of underwater excitement. However, it gets slower and banal with time.

Underwater Cinematography

One thing that I missed in No Limit was underwater scenes. The plot was unintriguing; hence, the makers could have explored the ravishing marine life. I am not saying they should have diverged from the story.

However, just before the first introduction to water sporting, there was ample space to dig deep and show the beauty our waters store in the form of animal and plant life.

Almost two hours long, No Limit sometimes feels dreary, adding to the already slow pace. I think 15-20 minutes could have been chopped to make it crisper and less overstuffed. After all, what matters in the end is the impact you leave on the viewers.

Is No Limit based on a true story?

No Limit is not based on a true story. However, it is inspired by the life of Audrey Mestre.

Who was Audrey Mestre?

movie review no limit

Audrey Mestre (1974-2002) was a free diver who died in the Dominion Republic while attempting to beat the world record at 171 meters. She fell in love with Francisco Pipin Ferreras (Pablo in No Limit) because of their shared interest in Free Diving. Both married and moved to Florida.

Who Killed Audrey Mestre?

To date, it is unclear who killed Audrey Mestre. Though most of the evidence indicates her husband, nothing is officially confirmed.

You can watch ESPN’s documentary,  No Limits, to learn more about who killed Audrey Mestre.  Also,   you can read  The Dive: A Story of Love and Obsession  written by her husband, Francisco “Pipin” Ferreras.

No Limit Ending Explained.

The French film has an open ending and doesn’t clearly state who killed Roxana. While it was Tom who checked the equipment before the dive, Pablo was seen checking them minutes before Roxana dived into the water. Who killed her then?

Both Pablo and Tom had the motive to commit the crime. As you must have seen, Pablo was insecure about the amount of success Roxana had achieved within a short span of time. He couldn’t withstand a woman, who used to be a member of his crew, breaking the records he once held.

Furthermore, Pablo was cheating on her. Though he successfully manipulated Roxana, he had a hunch that she could spoil his image in public. Also, since he had read the texts sent by Tom to her, Pablo was jealous of both of them.

On the other hand, Tom was heartbroken when Roxana started ignoring his messages after she herself came to him. He felt cheated and humiliated on a personal level as both Roxana and Pablo were back to being a couple even after the latter broke her heart several times.

Tom must have felt like an object being used by Roxana during times of stress.

Yes, the possibility of Tom being the culprit is much lesser than Pablo hatching the conspiracy. Yet, you cannot wholly give him a free ticket.

You’ve got the technique. You’ve got the lungs. You’re gifted. I’m not kidding. Some people immediately excel in some sports. It’s rare, especially in free diving, but it happens. You… you have a natural physiology for it. And that… that is a gift.

No Limit is around two hours of pure heartbreak. Netflix’s description does not prepare you for how gut-wrenching and frustrating of a narrative this is — it’s no light-hearted romance at all, especially with the knowledge that the inspiration for the plot stems from the tragedy of Audrey Mestre. The run-time drags in the middle, unassisted by how serious and melancholic the themes within this are. Straightaway, Rosenthal crafts such a tone of uncertainty and discomfort regarding…
