You’ve probably seen the phrase “Teamwork makes the dream work” printed on office mugs and motivational posters. But what exactly does it mean and what does good teamwork look like?

The phrase “Teamwork makes the dream work” essentially means that dividing tasks and responsibilities among a team can lead to better outcomes than a single person doing the same task, says Sabrina Romanoff , PsyD, a clinical psychologist and professor at Yeshiva University.

The saying was initially coined by American clergyman John C. Maxwell. Maxwell published an eponymous book in 2002, in which he wrote, “Teamwork makes the dream work, but a vision becomes a nightmare when the leader has a big dream and a bad team.” In his book, Maxwell discusses the importance of working together collaboratively and shares some principles for building a strong team.

The phrase caught on and has become popular over the years. In this article, we explore the benefits of teamwork, the characteristics of good teamwork, as well as some steps to help you be a good team player and build a strong team.

Below, Dr. Romanoff explains why teamwork is important and the benefits it can offer:

  • Improves efficiency and output: Teamwork is important because much more can be accomplished as part of a team than a single person working alone. Successful teams are much more efficient and effective at completing tasks than individuals.
  • Produces better solutions: Teamwork allows the opportunity for diverse perspectives to tackle problems and find solutions that are more resourceful and effective than one person’s input alone. When multiple people are contributing, more knowledge, viewpoints, and feedback are incorporated, helping teammates arrive at more holistic solutions.
  • Offers a larger pool of resources: Each member of the team can contribute their efforts, knowledge, abilities, and strengths to the task at hand. The team can tap into the resources each member provides to tackle new challenges.
  • Promotes growth and learning: When people work together, there is an opportunity for each member of the team to learn and grow, both personally and professionally.
  • Creates strong bonds among teammates: Collaborating on shared tasks, helping others, and working together helps teammates foster strong connections. People bond when they work together toward a common goal in an encouraging and supportive environment.
  • Fosters a feeling of belonging: Teamwork also taps into our human need for belonging to a community or group and feeling like we are working towards something that is bigger than ourselves.
  • Reduces stress: People tend to feel more supported when they’re part of a team. They often experience less perceived stress because they’re not facing the problem alone.

According to Dr. Romanoff, these are some of the characteristics of good teamwork: 

  • Shared goal: A successful team articulates and agrees on a common goal that has meaning to its members. Shared understanding of the goal the team is working toward is crucial so that everyone is on the same page and the team can operate as a cohesive unit.
  • Cooperation: It’s important for teammates to actively listen to one another, cooperate with each other, and help one other out when required. A collaborative approach leads to more efficient and effective output.
  • Respect: When people feel respected by their teammates, they are able to freely share ideas and opinions without fear of rejection or judgment. This level of safety sets the stage for greater commitment among teammates, originality, and novelty.
  • Trust: There is trust that each member will deliver on their role for the team and meet their commitments. Team members take their responsibilities seriously and commit to following through on behalf of the individual members but also for the collective group. Each member is also trusted with placing the team’s interests above their own.
  • Coordination: The team is well-organized so everyone is systematically and efficiently working together toward deadlines and shared goals. Effective communication and coordination are the bedrock of good teamwork.
  • Strong interpersonal relationships: There are strong relationships among teammates. Team members care about each other and relationships are deeper than just their roles in the team. For instance, there is knowledge and sharing about people’s personal lives, and interest in other’s talents, skills, and interests. Team members take the time to celebrate achievements or have social outings outside of work to get to know each other as people.
  • Effective conflict-resolution: Members of the team understand that conflict is inevitable but they are able to successfully manage and resolve them, by prioritizing the team’s goal over individual differences and conflicts. This means addressing issues among team members as they come up instead of pushing them under the rug, while also keeping differences among members in perspective so they don’t override the group’s mission.

Dr. Romanoff shares some strategies that can help you foster good teamwork:

  • Define the goal: Define the mission and goal of the team. These can be co-constructed with your teammates, as team members are likely to have more buy-in when they have a role in choosing goals that are personally meaningful to them.
  • Regularly ask for and provide feedback: Checking in with team members is the best way to implement needed change. This doesn’t have to be a formal process. Instead, openly discussing how team members are feeling can be normalized as part of the team’s culture.
  • Maintain transparency: Be transparent, not just about the goal of the team but the goal of smaller tasks and mandates. This helps people understand how each job and agenda item is contributing to the overall mission of the organization.
  • Making learning a continuous priority: Offer trainings, reading material, and resources to team members. Bring in people to teach on new topics and host events where members can share new information and passions with their teammates.
  • Recognize accomplishments: Give team members kudos for a job well done and have their good work acknowledged by their peers and managers. 
  • Foster a culture of gratitude: It can be helpful to foster a culture of gratitude by having members consider what they are grateful for within the team or in their day, to help them reflect on what they appreciate in another.

If you’re wondering how to be a good team player, Dr. Romanoff has some suggestions that can help:

  • Commit to the goal: Commit to the group process and the team’s goal. 
  • Take ownership: Take your tasks and responsibilities seriously. Be accountable to yourself and your teammates. Be cognizant of how your actions impact the team.
  • Be flexible: Be flexible , open to change, and willing to take on new challenges or responsibilities to help your team.
  • Work with your peers, not against them: Don’t compete with your peers. Instead try to work together toward a common goal and help each other out.
  • Maintain a positive mindset: Be positive and optimistic. This mindset is contagious and will draw other team members towards you.
  • Stay true to your values: Have integrity and speak your mind to advocate for the greater good and values of the group, even if it means going against what other group members are saying.

Was it full of cliché quotes about collaboration? Oh yeah. Inspiring yet somewhat cheesy stories? You know it. But we also love the earnestness with which Maxwell talks about teamwork and dreaming about big goals – two things we’re passionate about too.

From his take on the different types of teams we’re all part of, to his broader definition of dreams, here are the nuggets from the book that fellow fans of teamwork will find most interesting. 

Where corporate’s favorite corny quote comes from

“Teamwork makes the dream work” feels like one of those age-old mantras that’s been part of our culture for generations, but it’s actually relatively new. 

According to our amateur historiography of the phrase, a version of it made an appearance in the New York Mets’ 1986 World Championship song. Check out this absolute banger that had everyone singing, “We got the teamwork…that makes the dream work!”

Fast forward to 2002, when Maxwell’s leadership book cemented teamwork’s unofficial motto in history – that ever-present (and, yes, maybe a little done-to-death) tagline of collaboration: “Teamwork makes the dream work.” The turn of phrase is plastered on everything from wall decals to coffee mugs to t-shirts to coasters.

We took a gander at the now-20-year-old book, and all snark aside, we appreciate this little slice of teamwork history and the fundamental truths it shares, which – unlike the book’s hallmark quote – never get tired.

What makes a dream team?

Maxwell articulates the intangible characteristics of a great team, and in a sense challenges the concept of a team altogether. When most of us hear the word, we think of work environments, sports, and competitions. But in Teamwork Makes the Dream Work (along with his other book, The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork ), Maxwell offers a different perspective.

“Teams come in all shapes and sizes. If you’re married, you and your spouse are a team. If you are employed by an organization, you and your colleagues are a team. If you volunteer your time, you and your fellow workers are a team…Every day in some way, you are part of a team. The question is not, ‘Will you participate in something that involves others?’ The question is, ‘Will your involvement with others be successful?’”

While there are many types of teams, there are a number of generally agreed upon characteristics high-performing teams rely on . In Maxwell’s book, these core traits manifest as “10 C’s”:

  • Commitment that inspires results
  • Contributions that make a difference
  • Competency that raises the standard
  • Communication that increases effectiveness
  • Cooperation that creates harmony
  • Chemistry that enhances personal connection
  • Creativity that enlarges the team’s potential
  • Conflict management that reduces tension rapidly
  • Cohesiveness that allows for rapid change
  • Community that makes the journey fun

In our business (and likely in yours too), products and services are never “done.” They’ exist in a continuous improvement cycle – and the same goes for teams. Even if a group embodies every one of those 10 C’s, they should sieze opportunities to foster even stronger connections and boost performance so they can go farther together than any of them could on their own.

So Maxwell’s idea of teamwork is rooted in that list of C words – where does The Dream come in? In essence, Maxwell is espousing the idea that, beyond professional output or success in the traditional sense, teams should also prioritize bigger, aspirational, dreamier goals and ambitions. 

We co-sign on this approach – we set goals in similar ways on our own teams. Beyond defining specific targets to work towards – OKRs and KPIs , for example – defining a BHAG (big, hairy, audacious goal) or higher-level purpose inspires teams to think bigger about the impact they can make. Tons of research, including this study by Deloitte , shows that purpose-driven companies gain more market share, grow faster, and have happier employees and customers. 

Maxwell also points out that being part of a team pushes people to dream even bigger than they would solo. “Sometimes you have to sacrifice a small dream of your own in order to accomplish a bigger dream with someone else,” he writes. “It takes a courageous and humble person to make such a decision. But look what can result.” 

Dreaming big may seem unrealistic or unproductive when there are immediate needs to address. But defining those pie-in-the-sky dreams not only helps rally the team around a common vision, but also helps determine whether those immediate needs are truly the best way to “make the dream work.”

Overall, Maxwell’s findings directly align to a core truth that we embrace today: Effective teamwork is essential to personal and professional success. It gives companies, competitors, and couples a real advantage in several key areas:

Better problem solving

“No problem is insurmountable. With a little courage, teamwork, and determination, a person can overcome anything.”

Science tells us that multiple minds are better than one when solving complex problems. “We found that groups of size three, four, and five outperformed the best individuals,” says Dr. Patrick Laughlin , a researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “[We] attribute this performance to the ability of people to work together to generate and adopt correct responses, reject erroneous responses, and effectively process information.” 

Opportunities for growth and innovation

“Empowered team members achieve more and help the team to continually improve.”

Some of the most innovative ideas and biggest advancements have happened when disperate people and ideas collide. “Most people think success comes from surrounding yourself with others that are like you,” says Frans Johansson, author of The Medici Effect . “But true success and breakthrough innovation involves discomfort. Discomfort pushes you to grow. This is where difference of experience, opinion, and perspective come in. Diversity is a well-documented pathway to unlocking new opportunities, overcoming new challenges, and gaining new insights.”Research shows innovation can only happen when communication within the team is open and collaborative, notes Ben Wigert, lead researcher for Gallup’s workplace management practice. The most creative solutions surface when team members feel safe enough to ask questions (even if they feel silly), propose unique ideas, and receive constructive feedback. 

Happier team members

“[A team] helps you fulfill the desires of your heart.”

Even if Maxwell’s rhetoric feels a bit cheesy, our own research found that team members were 80 percent more likely to report higher emotional well-being when honest feedback, mutual respect, and personal openness were encouraged. In other words, they were markedly happier and more fulfilled when they were part of a healthy team. 

Keeping employees happy is not only good for people, but also good for business. Research from the University of Warwick in England suggests happy employees are up to 20 percent more productive than unhappy employees.  

Teamwork leads to higher satisfaction in our personal lives too. In fact, a UCLA study shows that couples who have clearly defined responsibilities and agree to share chores are more likely to be happier. (Feel free to quote us next time you remind your partner or roommate to take out the trash.)

Lower risk of burnout

“The bad news is that people don’t have the energy to do more personally at [age] sixty than at twenty. The good news is that if you’re part of a team, you can do more collectively at sixty than you could at twenty.”

If we set the casual ageism aside (our collective thinking about generational differences has changed a lot in the last 20 years!) and acknowledge that anyone can fall victim to burnout, we agree that teamwork is the salve. There are many proven ways to reduce burnout inside and outside of work, including creating a positive and supportive environment, setting clear expectations, alleviating stress where possible, communicating effectively, removing barriers, and, you guessed it, working as a team (remember those 10 C’s?). Gallup found that “When people work together and support one another, the workload gets lighter and challenges seem smaller.”

Higher productivity

“[A team] multiplies your value to others…It allows you to help others do their best.”

A recognition-rich environment , where colleagues acknowledge that multiplied value they get from their teammates, is a direct path to higher productivity. Getting a pat on the back from someone higher up or more experienced can make us feel more motivated, and hearing kudos from our equals or other team members may be even more effective. In the TINYpulse Employee Engagement and Organizational Culture Report , which surveyed more than 200,000 employees, participants reported that having the respect of their peers was the number-one reason they go above and beyond at work.

Smarter risk-taking – and fewer mistakes

“Are you content just to dream it, or are you willing to take the risk and try to live it?” 

When we’re on our own, we may be more hesitant to put ourselves out there and pursue our dreams. But when we have the support of a team at work or at home, we know we have people to fall back on in case of failure. That psychological safety typically makes us feel more secure taking risks – and more likely to reap the rewards. 

Likewise, when a team feels less frazzled, they make fewer mistakes. That’s worth keeping in mind, especially since 61 percent of people cite work as a significant source of stress .

While the quote seems dated, it remains just as relevant in today’s work environment as it was 18 years ago. Don’t be misled by the term “bad team.” After all, there’s no “I” in team and every member is in it together. Troubled teams have challenges with negative behaviors, lack of trust, low productivity, misalignment, and lack of vision and purpose. However, the sheer definition of team becomes its own solution.

A team is a group of individuals working together who collaborate on related tasks to achieve their common goal. Creating an environment where teamwork can thrive means forging valuable relationships with the colleagues within that team to establish a harmonious workplace. Camaraderie and harmonious relationships will shape a comfortable workplace where colleagues are helpful, motivating, and supportive of each other. In such an environment, it is possible for the employees to perform better at their jobs and decrease issues that deflate the team’s work spirit. When employees experience harmony, there is an increased sense of belonging.

As the pressure to fulfill responsibilities and meet deadlines builds, the dedication to upkeeping relationships with colleagues can sometimes take a backseat. Teams can place their own self-care on the back burner and put the tactical work needs first. Approachability Collaboration is the key to diversity of thought and the generation of ideas.  It is also the building block of solid relationships.  Team effort is necessary to achieve a project’s success and while each member plays a part to make it work, it would be catastrophic if members were too restrictive with their time and unable to support their teammates. When peers need advice on subjects you have expertise on, provide guidance, coaching, or just a listening-ear to show support. The good news is, you too will receive it in return when you need it.

Respect & Equality Staff members appreciate the unique capabilities and value their colleagues bring into the workplace. Demonstrating respect for colleagues and their differences creates a fair environment that reduces stress and increases collaboration—treat each other with dignity and respect. Teams evolve effectively when trust rises, and a sense of judgement is eliminated.

Accountability Workplaces that base themselves on acting justly and taking responsibility for their own actions foster a strong sense of collaboration and teamwork.  Accountability nurtures an environment where it is ok to admit and apologize for mistakes, and generates a learning ethos so everyone can grow. Actions such as these decrease conflict and promote workplace harmony, supporting teamwork and success.

Establishing excellent relationships with colleagues can transition your team from one that is transactional to one that is an outstanding, high-performing entity.  When the team is invited to fully show up, use their strengths, and partner together in a collaborative manner, they develop loyalty to one another, their department, and the organization while achieving peak performance.  This harmonious attitude truly inspires the level of teamwork that is needed to make the dream work.

In other words, if a project fails, it’ll be able to trace the initial reason for its failure. In addition, dream team members always ask questions if something doesn’t make sense or isn’t clear enough, which helps them overcome challenges more easily.

5) They are open to constructive criticism

While it may seem like dream team members don’t leave room for constructive feedback , nothing could be further from the truth. The way we’re working isn’t working..

We were sold a bill of goods at a very young age. From the moment you set foot on a soccer field to the motivational poster you stumbled upon in the office at your first job, you’re told, "Teamwork makes the dream work.” This implies that as long as you work together as a team, you’ll accomplish big things. 

This saying might hold less truth than we're led to believe. 

Truthfully, we’re in a much less comfortable reality: Teams are unhappy. Managers feel responsible. And work is suffering. 

Teams don't just need more collaboration products — they need to learn how to actually work together. According to Mural’s 2024 Teamwork Research Report , 3 in 5 workers have considered leaving their jobs or already applied for a new one due to bad teamwork. Additionally, over half of the workforce feels burnt out, and nearly half have already left their jobs due to poor team dynamics. 

So, does teamwork make the dream work anymore? Or does work make the dream team? What are we doing wrong?

We’re focusing on the wrong problem

We keep pointing fingers at work-from-home (WFH) or return-to-office (RTO) initiatives as the culprit for teams working poorly together. Pro-WFH teams say the office creates unnecessary commutes and distractions. Pro-RTO teams say being home isn’t a productive work environment, and it’s hard to feel part of a team when you aren’t in person.

We’re gonna let you in on a little secret: It doesn’t really matter where you work . In fact, 49% of remote workers say teamwork has declined or remained the same — compared to 46% of in-office workers, and 40% of hybrid workers.

The issue is the how. There is no system in place to facilitate good teamwork. Take an orchestra, for example. Individually, musicians really know their instruments inside and out. But put them in a room together and tell them to play without any sheet music‌ — ‌it’s not gonna sound great. Most classical musicians need notes. They need a framework to orchestrate — see what I did there — beautiful music. 

Similarly to musicians needing notes to visualize music, teams need to visualize work. Visualizing work is a way of working in a shared, visual space everyone can see and engage with. Instead of just talking, you can use visuals to enhance understanding and discover relationships that aren’t clear until you see them.

One tool alone won’t lead to effective teamwork

It's a common misconception that simply adopting a new visual tool will solve all collaboration issues within a team. While it's tempting to think that technology can be a cure-all, the reality is often more complex.

According to a forecast by Gartner , the market for social and collaboration software is expected to nearly double, growing from $3.5 billion in 2019 to $6.9 billion by 2024. This indicates a significant increase in the adoption of these tools, suggesting that more businesses are seeking digital solutions to enhance teamwork and productivity. 

However, the effectiveness of these tools in improving team collaboration is questionable. Mural’s 2023 Collaboration Trends Report reveals nearly half of users who employ five or more collaboration tools still experience frequent issues in their collaborative efforts. This discrepancy highlights a critical gap between tool adoption and actual improvement in collaborative processes.

This leads us to question the reliance on tools alone to foster a sense of connection and alignment among team members. In many cases, these tools actually contribute to more confusion and inefficiency, rather than alleviate them.

At some point in our lives, most of us will be a part of a team. Maybe we will join a sports team, be cast in a school play, or be assigned a group project to complete. You may have heard your teachers, parents, and coaches talk about the importance of teamwork and how working together as a group can help teams achieve their goals [ 1 ]. But what exactly is teamwork? Teamwork behaviors are the things that team members do as a group to meet team goals, like winning a basketball game or completing a group assignment [ 2 ]. In this article, we will describe how the members of a basketball team can use teamwork before they play a game, while they are playing, and even after a match, to improve the way they play as a group ( Figure 1 ). While we will be using a basketball team as the main example throughout this article, everything we discuss can apply to any type of team, in any sport or other activity.

How Can Teams Work Together Before Competition?

The first part of teamwork that we must consider is preparation . This is when team members figure out what they want to achieve during the season or even in the next game. It can be very helpful for teams to take some time to plan how they want to play as a team [ 2 , 3 ]. A basketball team might decide to set some team goals before a game. One goal might be to improve their skills, such as passing, shooting, or rebounding. The team might also set the goal of being supportive toward teammates during the game. To meet these goals, it is important that the team talks about how they plan to achieve each goal [ 2 , 3 ]. For example, if the goal is to improve skills like dribbling or shooting, the team may decide to set aside time during each practice to work on those specific skills. If the team’s goal is to be supportive to teammates, the team may choose to talk about how a supportive teammate acts, both on and off the court. The team may make it their goal to cheer on their teammates, to give each teammate a high five, or to provide some encouragement to a teammate who may be struggling with a skill. Similarly, we might use preparation with our families when we are planning a trip or a hosting a party. It might be helpful for all family members to discuss what they will do to help prepare for an event, like packing the suitcases before a trip or preparing the food for the party guests. If everyone identifies a way that they can help, then things will likely go more smoothly.

Game Day: Teamwork During Competition

The second part of teamwork is focused on what happens during a game. For the basketball team to play at their best, they must consider the 3 Cs: coordination, cooperation, and communication [ 2 , 3 ]. Coordination allows each team member to know what his or her role is on the court. For example, when the team is trying to score a basket, each team member needs to be in the right spot at the right time, so that everyone’s movements are timed properly [ 2 ]. Next, it is important for a team practice cooperation , by having all members perform their individual roles to their full potential, while also keeping an eye out for teammates [ 2 , 3 ]. When a basketball team is on defense, the players on the court not only need to focus on who they are guarding, but they also need to be ready to help a teammate who needs back up. The last of the 3 Cs is communication , which means what we say to our teammates during play. Talking with teammates is important because it helps everyone stay on the same page—particularly since things can change so quickly during a game. Communication helps teams adjust or change things up on the fly [ 2 , 3 ]. Outside of sport, we can use communication to talk to our families, friends, and loved ones about how we are feeling or how our day went. Communication allows our teammates and loved ones to stay up-to-date on our lives as well as to understand when we might be feeling down and in need of cheering up.

Think for yourself: How could you use communication, coordination, or cooperation with your friends, family, classmates, or teammates, to improve teamwork?

Improving Teamwork Post-Game

The final phase of teamwork focuses on how we can improve teamwork after the game is over. During a game, things happen quickly and sometimes we do not have time to make big changes or discuss how we performed as a team until after the game. A team can do two things to improve their teamwork after the game is over: evaluate or discuss as a group what the team did well and what needs to be improved, and decide how the team will make any adjustments or changes to the way they play [ 2 , 3 ].

It is not only important to identify your team’s strengths and weaknesses but also to discuss how your team can maintain their strengths while also improving their weaker aspects. Perhaps your basketball team did an excellent job defending your opponent during the game, but only made half of their free throws. With this information in mind, it is key to make the necessary adjustments as a group. To help the team score a higher percentage of free-throw shots during a game, maybe the team needs to spend more time in practice, breaking down free-throw shooting technique; or perhaps the team can create drills to help players make their free-throw shots under pressure.

Think for yourself: Think back to a game or situation in which your team did not perform at their best. Name one thing your team could improve on and suggest one way that the team could improve that aspect before the next game.

Sticking Together Throughout the Season

Working together as a team is not always easy! Each team member is different and unique. We all have different strengths, weaknesses, personalities, and past experiences. Often, individual team members and the group as a whole encounter obstacles during a season. Therefore, it is important that every team is prepared to respond to obstacles and support its members when problems arise. Even though you or one of your teammates may be dealing with a personal problem that is separate from the team, it could still have an effect on how the team performs [ 4 ]. Supportive teams and teammates always find both big and small ways to help team members who need it. Support might be as simple as offering words of encouragement to a teammate who is struggling or talking to a trusted adult (parent, teacher, or coach) about a problem you or one of your teammates are dealing with.

In any team, it is possible that conflict between teammates will arise. Not only is conflict normal, but it can also be a positive learning opportunity for teams. Teams, families, and friendship groups can prepare for potential conflicts between members by having strategies to help manage those situations. Strategies that help individuals express themselves and communicate their concerns can limit the amount of damage that a disagreement or issue can cause a team, family, or friendship group [ 5 ].

Think for yourself: Imagine one of your teammates or friends is feeling nervous before a big game or other challenge. What could you, as a teammate or friend, do to help that person?

We will all find ourselves on a team on the field, court, classroom, or stage at some point in our lives. How we interact with our teammates massively impacts not only the way we perform but also how much fun we have with our teams [ 1 , 2 ]. Sure, it may have seemed corny or inspired some eye rolls at the time, but so often, when we hear wise words in the form of digestible quotes, we forget to stop and think about their deeper meaning.

There’s a lot we can learn from Maxwell’s warm approach, starting with understanding the meaning of his most famous line. It’s all very well to have the desire for a high-functioning team, but how do you actually create a dream-team ? Not everyone has the natural leadership and charisma of some of the well-known leaders of our time, but it’s still very possible to create an amazing team.

Hiring perfect team members is obviously an ideal way to start, but often we have an existing team that we want to improve. Don’t worry – no team is a lost cause and there’s plenty that can be done!

Components of a great team

There are a few elements required for a high-performing team. Regardless of the state of your existing team, all of these things can easily be improved. Figure out which ones need the most work and focus on those first. Here’s what it takes to cultivate a dream-team….

1) Compelling Team Purpose

Having a clear team vision is probably the most important thing for any team. This might be the same as the business vision statement , but if it’s a bigger organization, you need a specific team vision as well. The idea here is not to get too complicated, but to bring everyone together with a common purpose – something that’s motivating and somehow aligns with individuals’ goals. 4) Solid Team Processes

For a group of individuals to become a ‘dream team’, they also need a defined way of working together. This might include a regular (perhaps weekly) team meeting, a way of sharing what everyone is working on (use the Actioned App for this!), and a way of communicating (eg chat programs). Individual one-on-one meetings are also an important part of a solid team process.

There should also be a process for holding the team meeting. This could involve; new announcements, a ‘fun-fact’ question, reviewing any tasks outstanding from the previous week, reviewing the plan for the coming week, sharing individual and team ‘wins’, and discussing any issues.

A Team Agreement document is also a good idea. This should be a live document that’s updated as new situations arise with the collaboration of the team. It should define things like; the expectations of team members (hours, availability, etc), communication style and guidelines, tools and guidelines on when to use which one, and working style expectations. When issues arise, they can be discussed in light of the team agreement document and the team can agree to make amendments as necessary.

5) Reinforcing Feedback Systems

Knowing what’s working and what needs improving creates the feedback loop that both individuals and teams need. Without feedback, it’s hard to maintain motivation and a willingness to improve. Feedback should take many different forms – announcements, positive recognition in front of peers, individual performance assessments, and regular charting of the team’s progress (perhaps on a dashboard or KPI report). Celebrating successes is also a huge part of creating a high performing team. Make your team’s victories memorable and worth striving for!

6) External Support

Even the best teams can’t succeed without the necessary support around them. Depending on the situation, this might be senior management support, adequate funding, or support from a board.

A team that works well internally, but is externally blocked from achieving great things, ends up feeling frustrated and disenfranchised. Soon enough, morale drops and team members leave or resign themselves to simply going through the motions.

Feedback should come in a variety of formats, including announcements, positive peer recognition , individual performance evaluations , and regular tracking of the team's progress (perhaps on a dashboard or KPI report). But when it comes to teamwork, each person is responsible for his own part of work and quality is assured in his work and when work is delegated, the workload is spread out and on-time completion is ensured.

The owl then asked, “Of the two of you, who brings this fruit to me?” The monkey said he did because he plucked the fruit from the tree and the elephant said he did because he helped the monkey get onto the other side of the river. At this point, the wise owl stopped the argument and said, “Each one of us has unique abilities and strengths. Collectively as a team, we can achieve the impossible. All because we used your strength at the right time to do the right thing.”

And synergy is not a fad or a way to lower overhead costs. Extensive research confirms that when people work smart and in unison, it can boost productivity, creativity, engagement, communication, and efficiency—all words that should be music to your ears as a business owner.

A Team is Stronger than the Sum of its Members

In the competitive digital age, all businesses need to focus on efficiency to drive the bottom line. Now more than ever, teamwork is what any small business needs to succeed.

Synergy is crucial to maximize your staff and make sure everyone is as productive as possible by bringing out each other’s best in the workplace. But what is synergy? Well, by definition, synergy is “the interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects” (Waite, 2012). This means that while all your team members individually might be great at what they do, when they come together they should be even better than the sum of their individual results.

An easy way to visualize this is by imagining that you have three employees, and you ask them to load a truck with boxes from your warehouse. If each one goes back and forth carrying boxes, they will get the job done, but it would take much longer than if they create a chain and pass the boxes from hand to hand in a single row to get them all flowing into the truck much faster. Now, this was a very basic example to demonstrate how synergy and teamwork go hand-in-hand. But the growth of the result can be exponential when everyone in your business works together towards the same goal. And that is when teamwork makes the dream work.

John J. Murphy, a business transformation specialist and author of Pulling Together: 10 Rules for High-Performance Teamwork, believes that “each individual has unique gifts, talents and skills. Therefore, it is crucial to make sure that you build your teams, keeping everyone’s unique skills in mind. Think of it as a large puzzle, where everyone has many unique pieces that need to come together to build a single image. It is important to note that redundant pieces are of no use when building a puzzle. So, having a team made up of extraordinary individuals, where they all have the same skill sets, may not be as productive as bringing together individuals with complementary skills to build off one another. After all, as a team leader, it is essential to understand that one person’s weakness might be another’s strength.

A Gallup study of nearly 7,500 full-time employees found that 23% “feel burned out at work” very often or always, while another 44% say they sometimes feel this way (Wigert & Agrawal, 2020). That’s where the teamwork makes the dream work. Because it’s been proven that team members can provide emotional support to each other by sharing the workload. Not only do they understand the demands and stress of the job, but they can also build a sense of camaraderie while helping each other out. This, in return, makes the team much more robust as they grow together.

It turns out that many studies show how team members benefit just as much as the companies they work for. In 2018, American Psychologist released “The Science of Teamwork”—an entire special issue dedicated to the psychology of collaboration—showcasing 20 articles demonstrating the importance of teamwork in a wide variety of workplace settings; with evidence that cooperation can make the team smarter, more creative, and thus, more successful (McDaniel et al., 2018).

But keep in mind that even if your existing team doesn’t seem to have all of these teamwork components, these are skills that can be learned and improved. As a team leader, you must determine which members need the most work and focus on those first. As was the case with a Chicago-based workshop that helps people customize lights for their homes and businesses. When the owner first approached Marcus in 2018, she had a financially healthy company. Her issue was that she didn’t know how to scale the business.

Marcus noticed that part of the problem was that the management structure and business model posed some organizational issues that many small businesses suffer from. One of which is that employees didn’t have official titles, job descriptions, sufficient wages, goals, or development paths. As mentioned previously, you do not want to have redundancies. But if your team members don’t know what they are each responsible for, they may end up stepping on each other’s toes. They should know exactly how their role contributes to the team’s performance.

  • Positive team culture. Culture is crucial in team-building, and respect is always at the forefront. Everyone needs to feel like they are contributing to the business’s overall success to remain engaged and motivated. Promoting a collaborative culture will allow members to open up and rely on each other. A little bit of positive reinforcement can go a very long way.
  • Solid processes. Determining standards of communication, structured meetings, and documented procedures defining expectations, guidelines, and work styles will help everyone understand their responsibilities and how their results will be evaluated.
  • Feedback systems. The best way to fix a problem is by addressing it head on as soon as it happens. Respectful, positive, and constructive criticism will allow everyone to address their shortcomings and improve their performance. Tools such as individual performance assessments, team progress reports, and celebrating the team’s successes are important. Because when teamwork makes the dream work, the team should be rewarded.
  • External support. Teams need to know that they have the support they need when required. Management should set up their teams for success and be available to address concerns as they arise. Empowering teams to make decisions at their level is important, but also providing access to resources needed to act upon those decisions is crucial.

Let’s look at a Pennsylvania-based design firm specializing in custom commercial interiors as an example. When Marcus began working with the brothers who owned and operated the business, he stated that one of their main issues was that the team had no structure. He explained to them that if the employees do not know who’s in charge or what their roles are, the company will float aimlessly like a rudderless ship. After an overhaul of the organization’s processes, Marcus helped give the company direction, creating a structured and well-oiled machine, taking a group of individuals who had been working independently of each other and building them into a team. If we fast forward five-plus years into the future, the team is more fired-up than ever, and the company’s revenues have nearly quadrupled in that time. But how do you keep your team pumped up year after year? Peter Economy from Inc. magazine listed “9 Super Effective Ways to Motivate Your Team” (2016). As you will see, many seem very basic, maybe even common sense, but sometimes it doesn’t take much to make a huge difference in business.

  • Pay your people what they are worth— a well-paid employee is a loyal employee.
  • Create a pleasant workplace for all.
  • Offer opportunities for growth and self-development.
  • Happy employees are productive employees—try to foster a happy environment.
  • Positive reinforcement is more impactful than punishment.
  • Empower your team, trust them to do the job they were hired to do, and do not micromanage.

Upon doing their assigned work with proper coordination, a team always wins in achieving its goal.

Teamwork can be seen in a company, in the agricultural field, or any environment, you can name. Even the animals also perform as a team to survive in this competitive world. Cheetahs hunt together, wild dogs stay together avert danger, bees make their hives being united, and so on. It means that the success of a team depends on the performance of each member. They are called teammates.

In a team, there is a hierarchical system where one leads the others to follow. The leader has more experience than the other teammates. It is his experience that helps him to lead a team with proper supervision. If you look at an organisation, you will find that leaders show the path to the teammates to follow and complete their respective assignments. Every assignment is a small piece to a big puzzle. This puzzle will only take the right shape when all the pieces fall in the right place. Hence, the contribution of each team member is extremely crucial for the success of a team.

As time changed, the hierarchical system transformed. With the increase and diversification of responsibilities, the structure of a team changed drastically. It helps the companies to designate work and distribute the load. This helps in the proper management of workflow. As a person gains experience, he moves up the ladder and holds a more responsible position in the team.

In an organisation, the top-level comprises the managers who have immense experience in a particular field. With their experience and expertise, they control the productivity and outcome of a team. The middle-level managers carry on the orders given by the top level. This personnel has less experience than the top-level but more than the lower level of the team. The lower level comprises the frontline soldiers who execute what they have been ordered.

If you look at a family, there is no such level distribution. This distribution is done in a different way. The parents are those who take care of all the other family members. The rest of the members do their own work as assigned. This is where cooperation comes into the picture. If any of the family members do not cooperate with the rest, the entire system will crumble eventually.

Teamwork is extremely important. Whether it is a small business or a huge organisation, teamwork is important. The prime elements of teamwork are coordination and cooperation. Every element in a team will need to coordinate and cooperate with the rest of the team so that the workflow is maintained aptly. All the members should understand the importance of teamwork and contribute to it as per the directions given. A well-coordinated team is more productive. The outcome is extremely constructive. Companies design a team by filling the positions with the most suitable team players with apt experience in their particular fields.

Working as a team also makes new relationships. People come close to others and bond. They learn the strengths and weaknesses of others. Some teams just cannot seem to get it together. They may have all the talent in the world, but can’t win a game. Usually it’s due to their lack of togetherness; everyone is not on the same page. Playing for the same team does NOT necessarily make you a team.

We have all heard the expression “teamwork makes the dream work.” The expression means a team must have a common goal, a dream, and work together to achieve it. Everyone cannot be doing their own thing and expecting good results. Each member of a team has a role, and for the team to be truly successful, each person must put their own needs and desires aside for the betterment of the team. Basically, do what you can for your team.

Every player is important and needs to bring something to the table. Each individual player has to figure out what their role is. Some roles are bigger than others, but every role is important. If you are just a practice player, your role is to push the game players harder. The harder you work, the harder they have to work. Push yourself to get better while also pushing them to improve. If players are only worried about themselves, they are not doing what is best for the team. A team needs unity. The saying “you are only as good as your weakest player” is a great way to put it. If one person is struggling on the team, it is up to the other players to build them up and pick up the slack in the meantime. We have all had a bad game, so remember that when it is one of your teammates. Encourage them and do whatever you can to help them out. Most of the time, encouraging words goes the furthest. There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble .

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

I have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.

Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.
