Four project proposals submitted by the BDS students of our institution have been selected for the ICMR-Short Term Studentship 2020. The details of the selected proposals are as follows:

The ICMR STS program aims to promote interest and aptitude for research among the undergraduates. Selected students are expected to undertake and complete the project within two months, and includes a stipend of Rs.20,000/- for the principal investigator (the student).

The ICMR has awarded four JMI BDS students with research grants through the Short Term Studentship (STS) scheme for the academic year 2023-24. The selected students will carry out research projects under the guidance of esteemed faculty mentors.

New Delhi: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), has recognized and awarded four BDS students studying at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) a research grant under the Short Term Studentship (STS) scheme.

According to  JMI University , the students have been chosen from an impressive pool of over 15,000 applications submitted for the ICMR-STS 2023. The selected students Deepali Garg, Snehal Sharma, and Tarun Sharma, have been conferred with the STS-ICMR 2023 grant and will be remunerated with a monthly stipend of INR 25,000. 

These four students are set to carry on the research projects under the guidance and mentorship of esteemed  JMI faculty members , namely Mohammad Faisal, Shamimul Hasan, Harneet Kaur, and Vatchala Rani, the JMI statement said.

The Short-Term Studentship (STS) program is designed to motivate  undergraduate medical  and dental students to explore research opportunities in the healthcare sector. 

The shortlisted participants will receive a stipend for a two-month duration, during which they will be mentored by experienced faculty members and mentors involved in ongoing research projects to gain exposure to research methodologies and techniques.

Furthermore, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) highlighted the proactive role of its dentistry faculty in promoting research among undergraduate students. 

Over the past nine years, 12 students from this faculty have been honored with the ICMR-STS grant, which has supported research endeavors spanning diverse topics including dentistry and interdisciplinary subjects like COVID-19, temporomandibular joint, aphthous stomatitis, dental erosion, and obstructive sleep apnea.

Meanwhile, the dentistry faculty at JMI holds a commendable 10th rank in the  National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)  2023's list of  dental colleges  in the country. 

Established 13 years ago, the JMI dentistry faculty has secured the esteemed third position among the best universities in India according to the NIRF 2023 rankings.

Applications for the ICMR Short Term Studentship (STS) Program 2020 are now open. The ICMR Short Term Studentships (STS) are one of the most sought after and prestigious short term research program for the undergraduate medical and dental students.

Every year thousands of MBBS students from across India apply for this fellowship in order to acquaint themselves with the basics of biomedical research. The core subjects in which the STS fellowship will be awarded includes internal medicine, surgery, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, molecular medicine, Community medicine, pediatrics among others.

ICMR initiated the Short Term Studentship (STS) Program in order to promote interest and aptitude for research among medical undergraduates to serve as an incentive for them to take research as a career in the future. The fellowship familiarizes undergraduate medical students with research methodology and techniques.

  • The value of the studentship is Rs. 10,000/- per month for two months’ duration (Rs. 20,000/- only) and is meant to be a stipend for the student.

Eligibility

  • Open only to MBBS/BDS students studying in Medical/Dental colleges recognized by MCI/DCI, before they appear in their final exams and therefore, interns/ PG students are not eligible to apply. Students of paramedical/non-medical courses may not apply.
  • The student must carry out the research in his/ her own medical/dental college under the guide who is employed in the medical college as a faculty. Only permanent full time faculty members working in any of the Department of the Medical/Dental College where the student is enrolled can act as the guide. Part time consultants/visiting faculty/ residents/ Tutors/ Pool officers/ PG students cannot be the guide.
  • Only one student will be allowed to work under one guide. Two or more students are not permitted to work on same topic together. Proposals submitted on the same topic by different students are liable to be rejected outright. The student may have one Guide and other Co-Guides. However, ICMR will recognize only ONE main Guide for all purposes.
  • Indian National students who are studying in recognised medical/dental colleges of India can apply. Students who are holding OCI cards/ PIO cards/ NRI’s studying in Indian medical/dental college can also apply and copy of the OCI/ PIO/ NRI card must be submitted. Students from foreign medical/dental colleges are not eligible for this program.

This course is part of the series of courses on health research offered by ICMR-NIE. Systematic reviews, as a method of conducting research synthesis, are becoming common. They provide much needed evidence in areas which lack a concrete consensus and are considered cornerstones of forming practice and policy guidelines. This course was born out of the need felt among dental health professionals across the country to understand the basic principles of conducting a systematic review. Over the course of our lectures, the participants will be able to grasp the most essential steps and understand the various activities involved while carrying out a systematic review. We expect the course to be useful to dental health professionals who have minimal to no exposure to systematic reviews.

The instructors for this course comprise of a variety of public health experts who have gained vast experience in the field of health research. They also serve as faculty members at the ICMR School of Public Health of the ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai, India. Four BDS students of JMI gets ICMR Short Term Studentship (ICMR STS 2023) grant approvals

In synchronization with the vision of JMI, the research ecosystem of the Faculty prophesies more successful accomplishments in the coming years.

New Delhi :- It is a matter of great pride that four students of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) have been awarded research grant approvals for the year 2023- 24 under the prestigious Short Term Studentship (STS 2023) scheme by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi.

The Short Term Studentship (STS) program, an initiative by ICMR, aims to encourage and support MBBS/BDS students towards health research. This provides an opportunity to undergraduate medical/dental students to familiarize themselves with research methodology and techniques by being associated with mentors/research faculty for a short duration on an ongoing research program. The value/ stipend awards to the student for the studentship for the year 2023 is Rs. 25,000/- per month for two months’ duration.

The Faculty of Dentistry has been at the forefront of encouraging research among the undergraduate students, with 12 students being awarded the prestigious ICMR-STS awards over the last 9 years. These awards have focused on dental as well as interdisciplinary topics such as COVID-19, temporomandibular joint, aphthous stomatitis, dental erosion, obstructive sleep apnea, etc. The student awardees carry out the research over a period of two months under the mentorship and guidance of their faculty guides.

The result of the ICMR-STS 2023 programme was declared on the official website of the ICMR  www.icmr.nic.in  on 14 th August 2023. This year, out of more than fifteen thousand submitted projects for undergraduate research grants, four students from Faculty of Dentistry- Ishita Singh, Deepali Garg, Snehal Sharma and Tarun Sharma were awarded the ICMR-STS 2023 grants. They will be carrying out the research under the guidance of faculty mentors, Prof (Dr) Mohammad Faisal, Prof (Dr) Shamimul Hasan, Prof (Dr) Harneet Kaur and Dr Vatchala Rani.

Within a short span of 13 years since inception, the Faculty of Dentistry currently ranks 10 th amongst all the Dental colleges of India as per the NIRF 2023 rankings. This is reflective of the focus and determination of the Faculty towards oral health research, dental education and outreach services to the community.

ICMR revises rules, MBBS, BDS graduates having PhD can now apply for Scientist posts

Nagpur: Bringing good news to the medical graduates who wish to pursue their career in medical research, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has amended its recruitment rules and allowed medical and dental graduates having a Ph.D. degree to apply for positions of scientist E, F, G, H, director, and DG (Director General) at the facility.

With these changes in the existing rules, now candidates with an MBBS+PhD and BDS+PhD degree will be eligible for the posts of scientists and assistant directors-general of ICMR.

Previously, only those candidates who have obtained a Ph.D degree after completing a traditional postgraduate degree in science (MSc) were eligible for the senior posts at ICMR. Taking the academic standards into account, an MBBS degree is considered to be equivalent to an MSc or Masters-level qualification.

Back in December 2020, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar National Students Federation, an organization formed by Medicos, had claimed that medical students with a Ph.D. degree should be considered for the post of ICMR scientists. The organisation had raised its voice against the advertisement that had clearly mentioned that only MS/MD degree holders could apply for those posts. Clearly, the MBBS + Ph.D. holders had been excluded from it.

Medical Dialogues had reported back in 2021 that paying heed to the objections made by medicos, ICMR had set up a committee for considering the aspect of including MBBS + PhD holders for the posts of scientists in grade E, F, G, H, director and Director General (DG) of the apex body.

The eight-member panel, chaired by Dr. VM Katoch, former DG of ICMR, was looking into the scopes of revising the existing rules and amend the health research scientist cadre rules, 2007.

ICMR has finally amended the rules and the revised education qualification required for direct recruitment to senior-level scientist positions and the post of assistant DG at ICMR mentions, “MBBS or an equivalent degree recognized by the Medical Council of India or National Medical Council, with a PhD from a recognized university in specified subjects.”

Further, the specified subjects include various medical disciplines including internal medicine, community medicine, surgery, OBGY (obstetrics and gynecology), and pediatrics, along with a clear mention of “any relevant subject in medical/biomedical sciences.”

While commenting on the matter, Dr Siddhant Bharne from Nagpur, who has been actively involved with the issue and the demands of students, told the Times of India , “This is a significant victory for us and a progressive policy decision. We express our gratitude to the ICMR DG and the team for taking such forward-looking steps to support the MBBS graduates interested in research work in the field of medical science.”

“We have been advocating for this change since 2020. Through continuous follow-up, submitting memorandums, filing grievances and submitting RTI applications, we kept building pressure, which has finally resulted in this positive decision that will be implemented from this year,” he further added.

Mentioning how several doctors pursue PhD research and then wish to pursue further career in research in life sciences at ICMR, Dr. Bharne further added, “We need more doctors involved in medical research. The decision will provide them with a pathway, ultimately benefiting the people.”
